UConn announces date, location for matchup with Lady Vols basketball in Connecticut

Yahoo3 days ago
A date has been set for Lady Vols basketball's road matchup with UConn, its longtime rival and the reigning national champion.
Tennessee will travel to face the Huskies on Feb. 1, 2026 at PeoplesBank Arena, which was formerly known as the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The last time the Lady Vols played at UConn, they played in the same arena.
The road matchup is the second of a two-game home-and-home series with UConn. Tennessee beat the Huskies 80-76 last season in Knoxville, notching its first win over UConn since 2007 in Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell's first season.
That would be the Huskies last loss of the season, though, going on to win the program's 12th NCAA title. UConn lost three players to graduation. That included star guard Paige Bueckers, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. UConn also lost Aubrey Griffin and Kaitlyn Chen, who is also playing in the WNBA.
The Huskies return senior star Azzi Fudd, who won Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, and freshman phenom Sarah Strong. They also brought in Wisconsin transfer forward Serah Williams, who was one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal this offseason.
UConn leads the series 17-10, winning the first four matchups after the historic rivalry was renewed ahead of the 2019-20 season. The teams did not face off during the 2023-24 season due to scheduling conflicts.
Before the series was renewed, the two teams hadn't played since 2007. Tennessee won the final three matchups of the series before legendary Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt canceled it.

The matchup with UConn is the sixth nonconference game on the schedule for the 2025-26 season. The Lady Vols will open the season against NC State on Nov. 4 in Greensboro, North Carolina and travel to Murfreesboro on Nov. 20 to play MTSU.
Tennessee also has a trip to the West Coast with a game at UCLA on Nov. 30 and a game at Stanford on Dec. 3 in the ACC/SEC Challenge. UT will then return to the Women's Champions Classic in Brooklyn, New York, where it will face Louisville on Dec. 20.

Did MLB hit a home run with the Speedway Classic?

Yahoo Sports senior MLB analysts Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman reflect on baseball's record-setting--and rain delayed--game between the Braves and Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript You know, maybe we should throw this one in turbo mode, Jordan, because they did go fast over the weekend at the first ever. MLB Speedway Classic between the Braves and the Reds, these two teams played a game. Almost kind of two games, played a game. At the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, a NASCAR track, a custom built field was constructed in the infield, I believe is what it is called in in NASCAR, in the middle of the track. For the purpose of, as, as I understand it, setting the record for the most fans at a regular season game. I love this idea, like, I think that like we want baseball to continue to try and do new stuff. I think this was an unbelievably ambitious version of that, that as we saw was pretty difficult to execute rain or not. Uh, that said, I don't want this to discourage the league from continuing to try new stuff. I agree. And this was, this was a hell of a spectacle and I, I know the rain impacted, I'm sure the broadcast and how it was received, whether you were there or not, uh, but the, but the scenes were, were amazing. Bristol Motor Speedway knows how to have 90,000 people show up in the middle of nowhere and accommodate, right? That happens twice a year, I believe when they have the races there. The issues seemed to be like, you got to have enough food. That is, I, I know that maybe the rain, complicated things, having enough food feels like a base level accommodation. I would say that starting the game and playing and eating on Saturday in those conditions felt like something of a. Sham. Like that was outrageous and ridiculous. I know that they wanted to get the game in. I understand that. But if Sunday was an option, they should have just banged it earlier. This was cool. Keep doing stuff like this, MLB. It is appreciated, it is interesting, it breaks up the season. It brings the sport to places that don't usually get to see the sport. There's a novelty to it. It is interesting. I would just say. Even though you got a a C+ on this paper, does it mean you should quit writing? Close

Duke's Manny Diaz indifferent on new ACC availability reports

The ACC had a version of injury reporting when Manny Diaz was Miami's coach. Now that the league has mandated public availability reports every week, Diaz is indifferent to doing them at . 'When I was at Miami, we had it and then it went away,' Diaz said on Monday. 'You know, I don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about that. We'll do what they tell us to do.' ACC commissioner Jim Phillips announced last month that injury reports will come to the league for football, men's and women's basketball and baseball. Before every ACC football game, teams will submit an availability report two days before the game. It will be updated the next day and on the day of the game. 'This decision is directly connected to our ongoing commitment to best protect our student-athletes and our multi-faceted approach to addressing the effects of sports wagering,' Phillips said in Charlotte. 'In this case, it would alleviate pressure from entities or individuals who are involved in sports wagering that attempt to obtain inside information about availability from players, coaches, and other staff.' There is uniformity in requiring these reports. In recent years, some coaches would be more open and honest than others about the status of injured players. The policy Diaz is referring to was a non-public injury report shared between ACC teams before games. That was nixed sometime around 2018 or '19. Diaz kept things fairly close to the vest last season, his first at Duke. He discussed players who suffered season-ending injuries but stopped short of delving too much into details beyond that. Designations submitted before game days will be available, probable, questionable or out. The day-of updates will be submitted two hours before each game and each player will be designated as available, game time decision, or out. In basketball and baseball, reports will be submitted the day before each ACC game and on the day of the game. All availability reports and the full conference policy will be available on the ACC's website. Failure to follow the policies will be subject to review and potential penalties.
