Atherton LR ready to go again after their historic treble season
Five years ago, the club was a week away from being suspended from the league, but the recent campaign saw them secure not only the Edward Case Cup, but the Champions Cup and the North West Counties Football League (NWCFL) Division One North title - securing LR's first ever treble and a return to the Premier Division for the first time in nearly 15 years.

Not many 25-year-old's have that on their managerial CV, but David Jones, who led the team to glory not only in the league, also had LR three games away from Wembley in the Isuzu FA Vase, falling where short to Bourne Town in the Round of 16 as the last northern team left in the competition.
With all the success from last season fully enjoyed, everyone is now looking ahead to a year of new challenges, further away days and a chance for boss Jones to prove himself in a higher division.
LR will enter the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup this year for the first time in 15 years - the Yellows have not had the best history in the competition with their furthest progression being the Third Qualifying Round in 1996, beating sides like Liversedge, Ilkeston and Curzon Ashton before eventually falling to Bamber Bridge in a replay.
Jones has, however, enjoyed lengthy cup runs so far with LR in the FA Vase 2024/25 and Edward Case Cup last season, so an FA Cup run is not out of the question.

But before then there is work today with the squad and staff.
Over the summer, LR said goodbye to two coaches, Michael Moran and Gareth Flitcroft, whose efforts in the 2024/25 season and prior helped in the restructure of the first team and they both excelled at the club.
Jones said: 'Mick stepped away due to more work commitments, and going up a league means more games so that means more strain on him.
'Gaz has been outstanding for the last two years, leading a lot of the coaching, and just being fantastic for us.
'He has had the opportunity to take more hours at Stockport County which is brilliant for him and his personal progression.

'We would like to thank Gaz and Mick for their outstanding hard work, commitment and playing a huge part in our success over the last two seasons.'
LR recently confirmed the replacements for the coaching pair in the shape of former Southport coach, Simon Beswick, and ex-Glossop North End assistant manager, Lew Sumner.
The pair arrive to the club with a heap of experience, especially in the art of promotion with Sumner working with Jones during the pair's stint at Bootle Under-21s.
With the arrivals and departures of staff, there have also been a rake of departures from the first team, most notably Ryan Talbot, whose goals in the FA Vase last campaign were crucial in LR's advances, and young star Cristian Mukoko

Jones added: 'We have to keep moving forward.
'Every player from last season will forever be remembered here, that's for sure.
'Players coming in, we're looking at four or five really and that'll be it.
'Looking at ourselves over the last two years, we're built on stability, hard work and togetherness and we plan on continuing that trend.'
After winning the title, and with it promotion alongside play-off winners Euxton Villa, LR will be playing in the NWCFL Premier Division in 2025/26 - Step Five of the non-league pyramid.
The newest league format will see LR play 46 games across the season with 24 teams, including two national cup competitions and two domestic cups, which will certainly be a challenge the team will need to overcome.

Most fans have given a bold prediction of a top-half finish by LR, but Jones gave a less restrictive view on the matter.
He said: 'I have no expectations, there's no need for them really.
'We've been fantastic for the last two years to achieve this and we'll just keep the mentality of striving to be the best we can.
'There are no expectations of where we'll finish or how far we'll go in the cups, it's just a case of let's see where we go, roll up our sleeves and see where it takes us.'
The league campaign will start on Saturday, July 26 with the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round taking place a week later on August 2.

Hull FC home issues resurface with Giants loss
Betfred Super League Hull FC (4) 14 Tries: Martin 3 Goals: Charles Huddersfield (18) 30 Tries: Swift, Greenwood, Bibby, Flanagan, Lolohea Goals: Flanagan 5 Hull FC missed the chance to move back into Super League's play-off positions with a shock home loss to lowly Huddersfield Giants. They would have leapfrogged Wakefield Trinity into the sixth and final spot, but were well beaten at MKM Stadium. They have now won only one of their eight home games this season - a record that is seriously harming their play-off prospects. Tries from Adam Swift, Joe Greenwood and Jake Bibby put the visitors in a commanding half-time lead. Scores after the break from George Flanagan and Tui Lolohea confirmed the win, despite a hat-trick for Hull winger Lewis Martin. The Giants remain 11th despite the victory, but they have won three of their past five away games. Huddersfield had been hammered by Wakefield last time out, but showed fine early defence to deny Harvey Barron and then Davy Litten from scoring tries in the corners. Then Swift capitalised on his side's first good field position to put them ahead. Martin's first try got Hull on the board, but two tries in three minutes allowed the Giants to take control. Greenwood touched down after a fine little kick from Matt Frawley, before Bibby took advantage of loose play between Aidan Sezer and Jordan Rapana to run in from inside his own half. Flanagan's try and goal extended the gap to 20 points early in the second period although Martin reduced that with his second try, but Lolohea powered over straight after to restore the cushion. Martin's final try was the pick of the game which allowed some fine footwork and handling involving him and Litten, but Hull's performance was a far cry from the one which had won at Wigan Warriors seven days ago. Hull FC head coach John Cartwright told BBC Radio Humberside: "We never really got into the game. It wasn't a game you wanted to be coming from behind and chasing points. "To their credit, they got in front, they got the jump on us and were good enough to stay in front. I thought Huddersfield played really well today. (On difference from last week at Wigan): "Very frustrating, very much so. Errors again were through the roof. "That's the story of the game. Too many errors and too many soft tries. A week off coming this week may be coming at the right time." Huddersfield Giants head coach Luke Robinson told BBC Radio Leeds: "It's never nice going into a break on the back of a loss so I'm really proud of the lads. "I thought we were on an upward trajectory the past four or five weeks and the Wakefield loss felt like a step backwards. "We had some honest conversations and if I didn't get a response, I would have felt like something was wrong. "Thankfully for me, the club, everyone involved, the lads responded really, really well." Hull FC: Hardaker; Barron, Litten, Rapana, Martin; Charles, Sezer; Ese'ese, Cust, Knight, Ashworth, Cartwright, Aydin. Interchanges: Briscoe, Bourouh, Eseh, Watts. Huddersfield: Flanagan; Gagai, Milne, Bibby, Swift; Lolohea, Frawley; Powell, Woolford, Rogers, Rushton, Greenwood, Cudjoe. Interchanges: Golding, English, King, Burgess. Referee: Tom Grant.

England ready to meet challenge of 'fantastic' Spain in Euro 2025 final
England captain Leah Williamson admits that Spain are "the best at what they do" but is confident her side can compete with the reigning world champions in Sunday's Euro 2025 final. "Tomorrow we play a game against the world champions who continue to prove themselves over and over in the way that they play football," Williamson told reporters at Basel's St Jakob-Park on the eve of the game. "They are a fantastic footballing team, they are the best at what they do, and we are very much aware of that but we think we are pretty good in some areas as well. "We need to be at our best to beat Spain but I think they will need to be at their best to beat us too. "I think there is a lot of respect between the two teams, and I'd be hesitant to say we are underdogs in this scenario." England are hoping to retain the European Championship title they won on home soil in 2022, but the match is also a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Spain triumphed 1-0 in Sydney. There is a growing rivalry between the nations, with England winning in extra time when they clashed in the quarter-finals at Euro 2022. The sides have also already faced each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, with England winning 1-0 at Wembley in February. Spain avenged that result by claiming a 2-1 victory in Barcelona at the beginning of last month, when Claudia Pina scored twice after Alessia Russo had given England the lead. "We have played each other a lot over the last couple of years and I think you always have learnings from the games we have played," said England coach Sarina Wiegman. "Tomorrow is a new situation where we have an opportunity to hopefully take out their strengths a bit and exploit some of their weaknesses too." England have been sweating on the fitness of Lauren James for the final after she came off with an ankle injury during the last-four win over Italy, but Wiegman indicated that the winger is in line to feature on Sunday. "We had 23 players on the pitch today and everyone came through," said the Dutch coach. Chloe Kelly and young striker Michelle Agyemang are pushing for starts after making impacts off the bench in the comeback wins against both Sweden and Italy in the last two rounds. Williamson, though, believes James has a lot to offer. "We have a team of talented players. Lauren brings something slightly different, obviously having her available is the best-case scenario," said the Arsenal centre-back. as/mw
