Family speaks out after woman shot, allegedly by private security near Louis Trichardt
A 28-year-old woman is still recovering from injuries she sustained when members of what is suspected to be a private security company opened fire on her uncle's vehicle near Louis Trichardt on Friday evening at around 21:30.
Polokwane Review reports that according to the vehicle owner, Phathutshedzo Mukwevho from Biaba, he was travelling from Gauteng with his wife, children and niece when the incident occurred.
He says as he approached the circle leading to the R578 (Elim road), two unmarked vehicles – one in front of him and one behind – stopped him. Fearing an attempted hijacking, he drove off towards Polokwane on the N1. The two vehicles apparently gave chase.
As Mukwevho attempted a U-turn back towards Louis Trichardt, he says the vehicles continued to pursue him. When he reached the circle again, one vehicle blocked his path.
He turned in the direction of Sinthumule, and that is when the private security personnel allegedly started shooting at his car.
'I jumped out of the vehicle and surrendered. I was with my wife, children, and my niece who started crying from pain, and when we checked on her, she was bleeding,' Mukwevho says.
Another security company reportedly arrived on the scene and called the police and an ambulance.
Mukwevho says he was traumatised by the experience, especially since the pursuing cars were unbranded, which made him believe they were hijackers.
The family rushed Mukwevho's niece to hospital, where she underwent surgery to remove the bullets.
'This whole ordeal has affected us deeply. We're seeing a psychologist,' says Mukwevho.
A police report confirmed that the family was travelling in a hatchback when approached by an unmarked vehicle and that the driver did not stop, suspecting potential danger.
A 42-year-old man, identified as a security officer with a local private security firm, was arrested at the scene. Police confiscated a Siga 7.62 rifle believed to have been used during the shooting.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident, saying the law should take its course.
The suspect appeared in the Makhado Magistrate's Court today but the outcome of the court proceedings was not yet known at the time of publishing.
In the meantime, Mukwevho says he intends to take legal action. 'My car is riddled with bullet holes. This cannot go unchallenged.'

Ledwaba also called on any additional victims who may have encountered the suspect to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has issued a strong warning to the public, especially women, urging them to be cautious when using online dating platforms. 'As we celebrate Women's Month, we encourage women to prioritise their safety. Avoid meeting strangers in private locations, share your location with trusted contacts and report any suspicious behaviour immediately,' she said.

Watch: 12 injured in early morning bus, taxi collision
TWELVE people were injured after a bus and taxi collided on Sarnia Road, in Rossburgh this morning (August 5). Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics reported that emergency services found total carnage after a bus and a fully laden taxi had collided. Also read: Driver dies in freak car accident in Montclair 'Paramedics quickly set up a triage system and immediately called for more ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics to assist with the multiple casualty scene,' said Jamieson. The injured passengers sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe. 'They were stabilised before being transported to various Durban hospitals. 'At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown, however the police were on the scene and will be investigating further,' he added. 'Public nudity, animal sacrifices' - Joburg suburb petitions riverside rituals
Ceremonial rituals including animal sacrifices are becoming commplace along the Braamfontein and Sandspruit riverbanks. This is according to concerned Paulshof residents, who are demanding urgent intervention from Johannesburg city and provincial authorities. Residents say the weekend ceremonies begin in the early hours with loud drumming and chanting, and are accompanied by activities they consider disturbing and unsafe. This includes public nudity, animal sacrifices, large open fires, and the dumping of waste into the rivers, writes the Fourways Review . 'We are witnessing shocking scenes, people walking around nude in broad daylight, the slaughtering of animals near homes, and fires burning for hours,' said resident Albert Gumbi, who is also the former chairperson of the Paulshof Residents and Ratepayers Association 'This is no longer about cultural freedom; it's about basic public health, safety, and decency.' Complaints from concerned Paulshof residents have been lodged with the JMPD, as well as the Environmental Health Directorate. An online petition meanwhile has been circulating among locals, claiming that the riverbanks have become unregulated areas where by-laws are ignored. The Paulshof community are also worried about the potential for disease outbreaks, and the emotional impact the animal sacrifices may have on children and elderly people living nearby.
