GE2025: PM Wong receives congratulatory calls from foreign leaders on election victory
In his first election as prime minister on May 3, PM Wong and the PAP won 65.57 per cent of the vote.
It was mutual congratulations for PM Wong and Australia's Mr Anthony Albanese, who claimed a historic second term as prime minister on May 3 at the Australian federal election.
In a letter sent to Prime Minister Albanese on May 5, PM Wong noted how Singapore and Australia share a strong partnership and a high level of strategic trust.
'We are like-minded partners with a common interest in upholding an open, inclusive and rules-based global order,' he wrote, in the letter shared by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
'We work well together to promote substantive and pathfinding regional and international initiatives, including in Asean and at the WTO (World Trade Organisation).'
MFA on May 5 said that the two prime ministers 'reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations' ahead of the Singapore-Australia Annual Leaders' Meeting later in 2025.
There, the countries will launch the next phase of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
In his letter, PM Wong also noted that bilateral cooperation has grown in areas such as defence and security, trade and investment, the arts and culture, education, science and innovation, as well as in the digital and green economies.
In a Facebook post on May 5, PM Wong also said he had received calls from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
'They congratulated me on the outcome of the elections, and we had good discussions on regional developments and bilateral cooperation,' wrote PM Wong. 'I look forward to catching up with them in person before too long.'
In a Facebook post on May 5, Datuk Seri Anwar said he called to congratulate PM Wong on the PAP's 'resounding victory'.
'The PAP's strong mandate – securing 87 out of 97 seats – reflects the deep trust and confidence the Singaporean people have placed in PM Wong's leadership,' he said, as he reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Malaysia, underpinned by strong people-to-people ties and close economic cooperation.
He added: 'I am confident that under his leadership, our bilateral relations will continue to grow from strength to strength, especially as Malaysia takes on the Asean chairmanship this year.'
Indonesian President Prabowo, who shared footage of his call with PM Wong on his YouTube page on May 5, said: 'You came to me and congratulated me yourself, so I would like to go to Singapore and congratulate you myself.'
PM Wong was the first foreign leader to visit Jakarta after Mr Prabowo took office in October 2024.
In the video, Mr Prabowo also said he would drop by Singapore soon and call on PM Wong.
Bhutan's Mr Tobgay wrote on Facebook that he was 'delighted to speak with (his) schoolmate and good friend'. He had crossed paths with PM Wong at Harvard Kennedy School.
'I congratulated him on his landslide electoral victory which is a clear reflection of the people's trust in his leadership,' he wrote.
'With him at the helm, Singapore is secure in excellent hands,' he said, adding that he had invited PM Wong to Bhutan, and that he looked forward to deepening the friendship between the countries.
Leaders around the world, from the US and Europe to Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand, have extended their congratulations to PM Wong since May 4.

Office rents slip 0.3% q-o-q in 2Q2025 wiping out gains in previous quarter
Overall rents in Singapore's office market fell by 0.3% q-o-q in 2Q2025, broadly erasing the marginal quarterly gain of 0.3% that it recorded in the first three months of this year, according to the latest URA statistics published on July 25. On a yearly basis, the rental performance of the office market contracted 1.4% compared to the same period last year. This is the first annual decline the office market has registered since 3Q2021. Leonard Tay, head of research at Knight Frank Singapore, observes that office rents in the first half of this year reflect a broad trend of rent stabilisation. He adds that most occupiers opted to renew leases rather than expand or relocate to avoid high office fit out costs. Read also: Strata office floor in Suntec Tower for sale at $40.95 mil The latest office market figures released by URA indicate that office rents in the Downtown Core and Orchard Road Planning area declined 3.2% q-o-q to $11.68 psf/per month (pm) in 2Q2025, down from $12.07 psf/pm in the first quarter of this year. The fall in rents in this submarket came amid a slight improvement in vacancy rates, largely attributed to the strong take-up rate at IOI Central Boulevard Towers which is about 85% leased to date. On the other hand, office rents outside of the Downtown Core and Orchard Road registered its third consecutive quarterly increase, with median rents rising 2.7% q-o-q in 2Q2025 following up from a 1% q-o-q increase in 1Q2025. Tricia Song, head of research, Southeast Asia at CBRE, says that the opposite directions of rental movements in these two submarkets reflect cautious sentiment among tenants and landlords amid the ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty. She adds that cost-efficient buildings are gaining favour among most tenants. According to CBRE Research, core Grade A office rents increased 1.3% over the first six months of this year, broadly defying concerns that global economic headwinds would dampen rental gains. CBRE projects that office rents may increase 2%-3% over the whole of 2025. Global uncertainties have spurred most landlords to focus on keeping occupancies high. As a result, office occupancy levels, especially in high-quality Grade A buildings, remained tight and rents did not significantly increase, says Tay. Read also: One Raffles Quay secures $1.13 bil sustainability-linked loan to reduce carbon footprint Islandwide office occupancy in 2Q2025 was 88.6%, an improvement of 0.3 percentage points compared to 88.3% recorded in 1Q2025. But the figure is less than the 89.2%occupancy rate that was recorded in 2Q2024. To support occupancy rates, some landlords have begun to carve out smaller spaces to rent or offer a variety of incentives to bridge gaps in rental expectations, says Catharine He, head of research, Singapore, at Colliers. 'Such strategies have proven to be effective in driving momentum for take-up in new developments such as IOI Central Boulevard that is near full occupancy,' she says. While large corporations are unlikely to make significant office relocation plans in the coming months, small- and medium-sized companies may make selective flight-to-quality moves to capitalise on the rental environment, says Tay. Corporate real estate managers have moved away from static space strategies and are focused on portfolios that comprise flexible work arrangements which are better positioned to support a degree of business disruption without dragging down operations, says Tay. Echoing this sentiment, He adds that businesses are likely to delay leasing decisions until concerns over the US-China trade war and monetary policies in several key economies clarifies. Looking ahead, the supply of new office space is expected to be relatively muted until 2028 when about 3.08 million sq ft is set to enter the market. Overall vacancy rates look set to tighten over the next two years but cultivates a conducive investment environment amid falling interest rates, says He. X criticises Online Safety Act - and warns it's putting free speech in the UK at risk
The Online Safety Act is putting free speech at risk and needs significant adjustments, Elon Musk's social network X has warned. New rules that came into force last week require platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and X - as well as sites hosting pornography - to bring in measures to prove that someone using them is over the age of 18. The Online Safety Act requires sites to protect children and to remove illegal content, but critics have said that the rules have been implemented too broadly, resulting in the censorship of legal content. X has warned the act's laudable intentions were "at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach". It said: "When lawmakers approved these measures, they made a conscientious decision to increase censorship in the name of 'online safety'. "It is fair to ask if UK citizens were equally aware of the trade-off being made." X claims the timetable for platforms to meet mandatory measures had been unnecessarily tight - and despite complying, sites still faced threats of enforcement and fines, "encouraging over-censorship". "A balanced approach is the only way to protect individual liberties, encourage innovation and safeguard children. It's safe to say that significant changes must take place to achieve these objectives in the UK," it said. A UK government spokesperson said it is "demonstrably false" that the Online Safety Act compromises free speech. "As well as legal duties to keep children safe, the very same law places clear and unequivocal duties on platforms to protect freedom of expression," they added. Users have complained about age checks that require personal data to be uploaded to access sites that show pornography, and 468,000 people have already signed a petition asking for the new law to be repealed. In response to the petition, the government said it had "no plans" to reverse the Online Safety Act. Reform UK's leader Nigel Farage likened the new rules to "state suppression of genuine free speech" and said his party would ditch the regulations. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said on Tuesday that those who wanted to overturn the act were "on the side of predators" - to which Mr Farage demanded an apology, calling Mr Kyle's comments "absolutely disgusting". Regulator Ofcom said on Thursday it had launched an investigation into how four companies - that collectively run 34 pornography sites - are complying with new age-check requirements. Read more from Sky News: These companies - 8579 LLC, AVS Group Ltd, Kick Online Entertainment S.A. and Trendio Ltd - run dozens of sites, and collectively have more than nine million unique monthly UK visitors, the internet watchdog said. The regulator said it prioritised the companies based on the risk of harm posed by the services they operated and their user numbers. It adds to the 11 investigations already in progress into 4chan, as well as an unnamed online suicide forum, seven file-sharing services, and two adult websites. Ofcom said it expects to make further enforcement announcements in the coming months.

Parsons, Cowboys relationship is easily fixable with a little bit of cash money
It's the same stuff, different day in Dallas Cowboys Land right now. Every summer the Cowboys find themselves embattled in the same situation: a star player wants a new deal, and the front office is none-too-eager to meet his demands. And this year is no different. This season's edition of 'pay that man' features Micah Parsons. Parsons, the Cowboys All-Pro pass rusher and arguably the best player on the team, is entering the fifth-year option following his rookie deal. It's a time when most former first rounders who are going to be extended, have been. It's supposed to be a preemptive attack on free agency and a way for players to secure the bag, while teams lock down their future. It's safe to say things have gone poorly in negotiations. So poorly, Parsons has seemingly taken a page from Myles Garrett's playbook and now demanded a trade. The business portion of football can get ugly and ugly is exactly where the Cowboys and Parsons are at the moment. To fans who have been watching the situation unravel on social media, it's Code Orange in Dallas right now (hospital code for a disaster). Parsons might be the most dominant defensive player the Cowboys have ever rostered. Losing him is a nightmare no one wants to imagine. But in the words of the great Cowboys-killer Aaron Rodgers, 'relaaaaaax.' Money has a way of curing all wounds. The Cowboys have been down this road before and every time they've found a way to keep the players they want while repairing the bad blood along the way. All with a simple stroke of the pen. Parsons' trade demand is a demand for progress, if anything. His 'hold in' wasn't getting the results he wanted so he upped the pressure. Quite possibly the only player more media savvy than the Joneses, Parsons has placed himself in the driver's seat, even if the Cowboys hold the leverage. He's got fan support, teammates support, league support and all the media attention he could ask for. Parsons knows he's under contract for 2025. He also knows the Cowboys could franchise tag him for a year or two thereafter. He wants what Garrett and T.J. Watt both fought to get: a top of the market contract extension. Given his age, durability and efficiency, he's more than entitled to it as well. Resetting the market isn't an absurd demand and there's a good chance the Cowboys front office is already prepared to do it. There's a stalemate in negotiations, but the chasm probably isn't as wide as some might think. At the end of the day the Cowboys always find a way to get their man. If they want Parsons, they'll get him. And if Parsons gets paid, he'll be happy to put it all behind him and hit the ground running. Money heals all wounds in the NFL and the drama unfolding in training camp this year is nothing new for a franchise that lives on drama such as this. So, relax.
