Monaco madness! 11 car pile up at turn 1 in F2

Richard Verschoor – third in the current F2 driver standings – was also eliminated after slamming into the rear of his teammate Dunne during the pile-up.
The crash occurred when Rodin Motorsport's Alex Dunne T-boned ART Grand Prix driver Martins, sending him hard into the wall at the Saint Devote corner. Martins had managed to edge ahead of pole-sitter Dunne, but the Irish driver refused to yield and crashed into him, sparking chaos behind.
Contact between Formula 2 drivers Victor Martins and Alex Dunne at Turn 1 on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix triggered an 11-car pile-up and brought out the red flag immediately.
Marshals were on the scene immediately, launching recovery efforts and performing triage to assess which cars could still continue. The congestion at Turn 1 was so severe that one of the Trident Racing cars briefly went airborne on impact.
On-board footage from Martins' car clearly shows he was ahead of Dunne while taking the apex, only to be shunted into the barrier. Frustrated, Martins threw his hands up at Dunne in a gesture that unmistakably conveyed, "What the hell?"
In a rare twist for Monaco, starting from the back of the grid could have offered a genuine shot at victory amid the chaos.
At the restart, Invicta Racing's Leonardo Fornaroli emerged in the lead, having navigated the mayhem and built on his P3 grid position. But the drama was far from over.
With just 14 drivers remaining, Dino Beganovic crashed into the wall at the Casino section, prompting yet another safety car period.
Jak Crawford of Dams Lucas Oil inherited the lead after catching up to the safety car. The race was effectively neutralised from that point as marshals cleared the second major incident. Crawford ultimately emerged as the surprise winner – a very lucky driver who walks away from the Monaco madness with a victory on his résumé.

It was the season opener for the Boks, taking on the famed invitational side, and they were looking to get off on the right foot ahead of their incoming series against Italy and Georgia over the next three weeks. In the end it was a solid all-round effort, as they ran in eight tries to one over the BaaBaas, in tricky weather as well with rain falling over most of the game, although as Kolbe explained it wasn't the perfect game and they have plenty to work on. 'It wasn't the best of conditions. So I want to thank the supporters who came out in them to support the Springboks and this wonderful game,' said Kolbe after the match. 'It wasn't the best game from us as a team, but it is a good way to start the season. I am sure there is a lot more we want to improve on, so I am just looking forward to us building on this week by week. 'The message was clear this week. This was a Test match for us, we respect the BaaBaas coming out here, and I know they didn't have a lot of preparation. 'But all the focus was on us and making sure that we get better one percent at a time. So not the best performance, but I think we can take a lot out of tonight.' Man of the match Kolbe was in top form himself, scoring a first half try, while he was almost unplayable in the second, soaring high to field contestable kicks, while he stepped and broke the line on numerous occasions which saw him pick up the man of the match award. 'You don't get a lot of opportunities out wide (in games like this), so you have to go and look for some work on the inside. But I always say you have to give credit to the guys on the inside for making it easier for us which they did today, and that allowed us to capitalise on those opportunities,' said Kolbe. 'The nines were also spot on with their kicking game, which allowed us to get into the (aerial) contest which is what the coaches want. And we have to capitalise on that and create momentum for the forwards.' Irish legend Peter O'Mahoney, who captained the BaaBaas in his final game before retiring, said that they had enjoyed the week in Cape Town and were proud of their effort. 'We knew it would be a very tough Test match against the double world champs. It's always tough coming here (to South Africa) to play. You are always in for a huge physical test and the Springboks showed their class today,' said O'Mahoney. 'We showed some great moments and in the short time we have been together we have had a superb week in Cape Town, and I am incredibly proud of the boys.'

Springbok Player Ratings: Big Lood puts on a big show, Tshituka shines
The Springbok team showed up and showed out in Cape Town on Saturday as they outscored the Barbarians eight tries to one in their exhibition match to retain the Qatar Cup. There's no stopping the Springbok juggernaut, at least not for Barbarians, who plunged to a hefty defeat against the world champions. Here we dish out some key player ratings: Lood de Jager 9/10 Three super touches and carries leading up to the opening try scored by Malcolm Marx. Two crucial lineout steals close to the half-hour mark when the Barbarians were looking for a way into the contest. He capped off his fine return to international rugby after a two-year hiatus with a try in the second half. Vincent Tshituka 9/10 Used at the lineout as both a jumper and lifter in this clash, the debutant did his primary job to perfection. But his work in the loose and in openplay were superb too. Tshituka rounded of his first (of many) Bok game with two well-deserved tries. Kurt-Lee Arendse 8/10 In his first game back on South African soil, the speedster reminded the everyone just why he is coach Rassie Erasmus' first-choice winger. The dynamic runner breached the BaaBaas' defence at will, and while some of his Aphelele Fassi 8/10 With this performance, he confirmed that he is not conceding the Springbok No 15 jersey anytime soon. Fassi was rock solid at the back in defence and served as one of South Africa's greatest creative sources on attack. Morne van den Berg 7/10 As the race for a spot in the Springbok match-day squads for the upcoming Test series heats up, Van den Berg just edged ahead of the chasing pack at scrumhalf. He marshalled the game excellently and played a pivotal role in cover defence. Honourable mentions: Cheslin Kolbe and Asenathi Ntlabakanye Kolbe was named the official Man of the Match for his hot-stepping display in front of a crowd that went ballistic every time he touched the ball. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Comment by Ashfak Mohamed You would've expected a bit more from the Barbarians – especially with the calibre of players selected – but it was the Springboks who put on a show in a wet Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. The 54-7 scoreline was a bit jarring, as the Boks didn't need to get out of third gear – or even second – to dispatch Robbie Deans' bunch of all stars, which included Irish duo Cian Healy and Peter O'Mahony, as well as All Black speedster Mark Tele'a. But for a first game of the year, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus would have been satisfied with what he saw, especially in the conditions. The South Africans weren't tested at scrum-time or in the lineouts, but the return of Lood de Jager was a significant highlight. Plagued by injuries and illness in recent seasons, De Jager seemed to wind back the clock and was full of his usual energy. He stole an early Barbarians lineout, carried the ball with conviction at close quarters, and was even involved in a tussle with prop Paul Alo-Emile to demonstrate that he was really up for it. Another Japan-based stalwart in wing Kurt-Lee Arendse was full of running, putting in a few dazzling surges and getting a well-deserved try, while back-three partners Cheslin Kolbe and Aphelele Fassi weren't far behind. Fassi had a hand in the first two Bok tries with a couple of classy grubbers, although considering that it wasn't more than an exhibition game, perhaps he should've kept those kinds of tricks in the back pocket for more important occasions – such as the All Blacks at Eden Park. Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu also pulled off some moves from the Tony Brown playbook that got the drenched 45,000-strong crowd up on their feet. But the biggest winner of the day was scrumhalf Morné van den Berg, who produced a strong kicking display to make it a nightmare for the Barbarians catchers, while he cleaned up some scrappy ball at the breakdowns with aplomb. Van den Berg backed up Erasmus' pre-match praise, and proved that he is a viable option as a starter and back-up to Grant Williams. It was a pity that debutants such as Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Vincent Tshituka didn't get much ball in hand, even though the Sharks loose forward grabbed two tries. Hard-running No 8 Jean-Luc du Preez was in the same boat, and was the unfortunate victim of 'friendly fire' in a clean-out from De Jager that saw him leave the field just before halftime. Erasmus pulled off a trick of his own by introducing his entire bench early in the second half, and employing Sharks centre André Esterhuizen at flank – where he started his senior career. Esterhuizen made some decent clean-outs, although his running lines weren't always suited to a loose forward, while he shifted out to the midfield a few times as well. But his versatility could be a valuable tool to employ ahead of the 2027 World Cup, particularly if Erasmus opts for a seven-one split where Esterhuizen can cover both the midfield and loose trio. Another important box ticked were the Bok debuts for hooker Marnus van der Merwe and tighthead prop Neethling Fouché, who both got involved with vigour in the tight-loose and scrums. Italy will provide a far more searching test of the world champions' abilities in next Saturday's first Test at Loftus Versfeld, but it was a sound start for Erasmus' team in a big year of international rugby.
