South Al Batinah Municipal Council reviews development, service projects
The meeting, chaired by Eng. Masoud Said Al Hashmi, Governor of South Al Batinah and Chairman of the Municipal Council, discussed several development and service projects.
During the meeting, the Council hosted Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
The Council also reviewed responses received from relevant authorities, including development plans for the Wilayat of Wadi Al Maawil, a proposed health walkway near Nakhal Health Center, and the opening of internal roads to serve the wilayat.
These periodic council meetings reflect the commitment to follow up on development and service projects while considering citizens' proposals and needs across South Al Batinah Governorate's various wilayats, contributing to comprehensive and sustainable development.

Al Dhahirah Governorate to construct 18 groundwater recharge dams
Ibri: Acting in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, citizens in wilayats of Al Dhahirah Governorate joined hands in the construction of 18 groundwater recharge dams as part of a community partnership project. The project aims to boost groundwater reserves and ensure the sustainability of water resources for future generations. The step reflects the growing trend of community awareness about the importance of community-enhanced management of water resources. The dams' construction was funded by local citizens and the Ministry in a gesture that embodied the success of integrated efforts in the field of water resources management. Eng. Mubarak Salim Al Jabri, Director of the Water Resources Department in Al Dhahirah Governorate, said that work is currently underway to construct 7 new groundwater recharge dams as part of the community partnership initiative, as follows: 3 dams in the wilayat of Ibri, 3 dams in the wilayat of Yanqul and 1 dam in the wilayat of Dhank. The ministry contributes 20 percent of the cost of the project, while the citizens bear the remaining 80 percent. Al Jabri told Oman News Agency (ONA) that dams are a key element in improving water supply in wells and aflaj, and this helps raise agricultural productivity and provide water in a sustainable manner for the community. Al Jabri added that this year also saw the completion of maintenance of 8 existing dams in Al Dhahirah Governorate. Al Jabri said that Al Dhahirah Governorate has 36 dams ('groundwater recharge dams' and 'flood protection dams'):18 are government dams and 18 are community partnerships-based dams. He pointed out that these dams represent a fundamental pillar in supporting the infrastructure of water security and water resources. The dams achieve sustainable agricultural development in the governorate's various wilayats, he explained.

Oman participates in 2nd UN Food Systems Summit in Addis Ababa
Muscat: As per the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, left here today to lead the Sultanate of Oman's delegation at the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The two-day summit, beginning tomorrow (Monday), is jointly organized by the governments of Ethiopia and Italy. The summit will focus on addressing challenges and opportunities in developing sustainable food systems while supporting international efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since the previous UN Food Systems Summit+2, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has aligned its sectoral strategies with both the "Oman Vision 2040" - particularly its "Sustainable Environment" pillar for natural resource conservation - and the UN's SDGs in coordination with guidelines from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The participation underscores Oman's commitment to global food security initiatives while implementing national policies for sustainable resource management. The summit comes as countries worldwide reassess food systems following recent global supply chain disruptions and climate change impacts on agricultural production. Oman's delegation will share the country's experiences in water resource management, fisheries sustainability, and agricultural development during the working sessions. This high-level UN meeting brings together policymakers, scientists, and private sector representatives to evaluate progress since the 2021 Food Systems Summit and accelerate transformation toward more resilient, equitable and sustainable food production and distribution networks worldwide. Oman's involvement reflects its active role in addressing both regional and global food security challenges through multilateral cooperation.

Environment Authority conducts field surveys of coastal areas in Al Jazir
Al Jazir: As part of its efforts to enhance the protection of ecosystems and monitor biodiversity in the Sultanate of Oman, the Environment Authority this year conducted comprehensive field surveys of birds in the coastal area of Al Wusta Governorate's Wilayat Al Jazir, with emphasis on the three creeks of Khor Ghawi, Khor Qaised and Khor Ghadisir. Abdullah Salim Al Wardi, Head of the Department of Environment Conservation in Al Wusta Governorate, said that the surveys were aimed to document various species of seabirds and migratory birds and assess the overall environmental situation in these sites—deemed rich in biodiversity and natural resources. Al Wardi told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the surveys conducted in Al Wusta Governorate this year unveiled the prevalence of more than 60 species of resident, migratory and rare birds in the target areas. He explained that the bird species include the great white heron, grey heron, green-backed heron, black tern, sandwich tern, roseate tern, black ibis, little sandpiper, red-legged sandpiper, Siberian gull, greater flamingo, common mynah, water curlew, bulbul and the house crow, among other species. Al Wardi pointed out that field surveys bring about various benefits, like monitoring biodiversity with precision, documenting rare and endangered species and analysing the environmental status of coastal systems to enhance sustainable environmental management decisions. He added that surveys also provide environmental databases with accurate and up-to-date information, identify sites of special significance that might be eligible for listing as protected wildlife reserves, in addition to raising public awareness and enhancing cooperation with partner environment authorities.
