West Bengal to host ‘Business and Industry' Conclave: Event likely later this year; things to know
Mamata Banerjee
, announced on Tuesday.
The initiative is being viewed as a push to accelerate industrialisation in the state.
Mitra said the conclave would be organised after the Puja festivities to give further momentum to West Bengal's industrial development.
'There will be a Business and Industry conclave after the Pujas. To take this conclave forward, the state-level investment and synergy committee has been tasked to prepare the roadmap for the conclave,' said Mitra, who is also the former finance minister of the state.
He said that the decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Banerjee, which was also attended by chief secretary Manoj Pant and other senior officials.
This year, Durga Puja will be celebrated in the last week of September, while Diwali falls in the third week of October.
According to Mitra, the roadmap for the conclave will focus on factors such as growth potential, employment intensity, export prospects, the state's national advantage and revenue generation.
He added that after the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), a key development was the formation of the state-level investment and synergy committee to create a single-point interface for industrial proposals.
'The committee, chaired by the chief secretary, meets twice a month. In the last three months, it has cleared proposals to establish 3,165 projects,' Mitra said.
These projects span a range of sectors, including real estate, information technology, food processing and tourism, according to a source in the state secretariat.
While the total potential investment in these projects has not yet been revealed, Mitra said the figures are quite significant.
He also confirmed that the Bengal Global Business Summit will continue as usual next year.

India's palm oil imports set to rise in H2 on festival demand & lower prices: IVPA President
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel India's demand for palm oil is likely to increase in the second half of the year on rising festival demand and lower prices, with total edible oil imports expected to remain at 16 million tonnes during the 2024-25 oil year ending October, Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) President Sudhakar Desai said on the total imports, about 9 million tonnes should be palm oil, 4.5 million tonnes soyabean oil, and the remaining 3.5 million tonnes sunflower oil during the current year, Desai told reporters on the sidelines of the 4th edition of the IVPA Global Roundtable here."Edible oil imports in the last six months have been about 7-8 per cent lower, consequent to high prices and fear of cheaper goods in the FTAs. There was no incentive for holding stock. Due to these reasons, it was low," Desai said."But now it is turning. Right now, what's happening is that palm oil, which was actually very expensive, is now becoming cheaper, so palm is back in the import basket," he recent decrease in duties and the influx of zero-duty imports from Nepal not materialising are also expected to boost imports, Desai has also widened the duty differential between crude and refined oils, which helps the domestic industry stock up to maintain the supply chain."With all these market anomalies going away, imports will be good in the next six months. I expect about 16 million tonnes of total imports in 2024-25, which is more or less similar to last year," he the last six months, palm oil imports dropped by about 1.2 million tonnes compared to the previous year as it became more expensive than soyabean and sunflower oils."People were calling it palm olive oil," Desai demand for palm oil will increase during the festival season from August as Durga Puja will commence early in September, he said."So the buying will be peak in August. Normally, it used to be peak in September, but this time it is early August," Desai expects consumption to be at least 10 per cent higher than last year during the festive July, edible oil imports have already shown an uptick with 1.4 million tonnes imported, making up for the earlier shortfall and filling up the distribution pipeline. When palm oil became expensive, the entire HORECA (hotels, restaurants, catering) sector and organised users like Parle, Britannia, and ITC shifted to alternative oils such as rice bran oil."When that reverses and they have to start importing palm oil, then the shift happens back," Desai passing duty cuts to consumers, Desai said the government wants immediate action, which has happened in loose oil. However, there is a lag time of 21-30 days for packaged products."Every company has duty-paid stocks on hand and forward sales. When you look at all these things, the normal catch-up time is about 21-30 days," he said.

8,500 hawkers set to get vending certs before puja
Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to distribute 8,500 vending certificates to hawkers who have already enrolled with the civic body as bonafide traders in the city's major hawking zones before the Pujas. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the first phase, KMC will start distributing vending certificates in major hawking hubs like New Market, Hatibagan, and Gariahat from Aug 16. The certificate will be issued for a year and will be renewed annually. This decision was made at the meeting of the town vending committee at the civic headquarters on Wednesday. According to a KMC vending committee member, the exercise of offering vending certificates aims at restricting hawkers who have encroached on the carriageways or a significant portion of pavements. "We have decided to start distributing vending certificates to genuine hawkers to identify and remove those who have been illegally occupying carriageways and pavements," said the town vending committee member. At the same time, a unanimous decision was made to push back a section of hawkers who have taken over carriageways. KMC and the police will need to conduct a joint drive to free the carriageways and car parking lots of hawkers' encroachment in the New Market area. According to a KMC official, the certificates will be issued to around 59,000 hawkers who applied in 2015 for a hawker's identity card, enabling them to register as bonafide hawkers. However, according to a civic official, the hawker population has already reached the 3,00,000 mark. "It is an uphill task to issue vending certificates to all hawkers at once. But those who haven't applied so far will be given an opportunity to apply for enrolment in the future after the completion of the distribution of vending certificates. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, it will be a continuous process and may take years. The town vending committee will need to keep a vigil on new encroachments of carriageways or entire pavements, as that will certainly endanger the life of a pedestrian," said a member of the committee. "We don't want to evict hawkers. But we need to restrict rampant encroachment of carriageways by a section of the hawkers who don't want to abide by rules. We have recommended the distribution of a vending certificate to those who have been doing business without infringing hawking rules," said Debasish Das, a member of the town vending committee who attended the meeting as a hawker representative.

India's Smartphone Market Grows 7% To Reach 39 Million Units In April-June
New Delhi: Driven by easing inventory challenges and renewed vendor activity, India's smartphone market rebounded in the April-June period, growing 7 per cent year to reach 39 million units, according to a new report. The growth was primarily fuelled by fresh launches concentrated in the second quarter, following a cautious Q1 where vendors held back due to elevated inventory levels, according to Canalys (now part of Omdia). "Heightened competition beyond the top five is reshaping India's smartphone landscape, as premium incumbents and design-led challengers refine their playbooks,' said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst. Apple ranked sixth in Q2 2025, with the iPhone 16 family accounting for over 55 per cent of its shipments, while the iPhone 15 and 13 continued to drive demand across price tiers. According to the report, Vivo (excluding iQOO) led the market with 8.1 million units shipped and a 21 per cent market share. Samsung followed in second place with 6.2 million units and a 16 per cent market share. OPPO (excluding OnePlus) climbed to third with 5 million units, edging past Xiaomi, which also shipped 5 million. realme completed the top five with 3.6 million units. 'With limited organic demand, India's smartphone market in H2 2025 will hinge more on channel execution than product launches,' stated Chaurasia. Brands are actively locking inventory with distributors and retailers through channel incentive programs ahead of the upcoming festive season in India. These include high-value rewards – ranging from foreign trips to vehicle rewards – tied to performance during Monsoon sales, Durga Puja and Diwali cycles, the report said. Retail infrastructure upgrades are gaining pace, with improved booth setups, structured shelf placements and stricter quarterly targets for promoter engagement and in-store execution. At the same time, brands are doubling down on affordability by expanding long-tenure financing options, especially for mid- to high-end models.
