Govt has policy of zero tolerance against terrorism, Naxalism: PM
''Be it terrorism or Maoist elements spreading unrest, our government follows a policy of zero tolerance,'' the Prime Minister said while inaugurating the Northeast Rising Summit here on Friday.
The two-day Summit will highlight India's Northeastern region as a land of opportunity to attract global and domestic investment there. It will focus on tourism, agro-food processing, textiles, information technology, infrastructure, energy, entertainment and sports. It will include ministerial sessions, Business-to-Government sessions, Business-to-Business meetings, startups and policy initiatives by the state governments and central Ministries for investment promotion.
The Prime Minister said The North East is becoming a key destination for sectors like energy and semiconductors. The region is witnessing unprecedented progress and the government is determined to accelerate its growth story, he said.
Describing Northeast as a complete package for tourism, he said the region is a perfect destination for its nature and organic life-style. Whether concerts, global conferences or destination weddings, Northeast is a perfect destination.
There was a time when the Northeast was merely called a Frontier Region. Today, it is emerging as the Front-Runner of Growth, he said adding that his government went forward from 'Look East' to the 'mantra of Act East.', The government's effort has been to make the 'Heal in India mantra'' a ''global mantra.''
''For us, EAST means - Empower, Act, Strengthen and Transform. This is the government's policy for Eastern India.''
Pointing out that The Northeast is ''the most diverse region of our diverse nation,'' he said this diversity is its big strength.

Port of Spain/New Delhi, July 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today receive the 'Order of Trinidad and Tobago', the highest honor of the country on the second day of his visit to the Caribbean nation. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had yesterday announced that Trinidad and Tobago would confer the award on the visiting Indian Prime Minister. The Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to her and the people of Trinidad and Tobago for this honor. This would be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25th international honour. Modi, who is in Trinidad and Tobago as part of his five-nation tour, will hold talks with the top leadership of Trinidad and Tobago to further strengthen bilateral relations. Earlier, PM Modi was received by his counterpart Persad-Bissessar at Piarco International Airport, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour. While addressing an Indian community event in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar hailed the relationship between the two nations and said, "These are ties of ancestry, of kinship, of sacrifice, and of love. We are bound by history, by shared struggle, and we're bound by common dreams. Through your benevolence, you brought hope and calm where there was fear. This was more than diplomacy. This was an act of kinship, shared humanity, and love. This is one of the many reasons we are deeply proud to bestow upon you The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, our nation's highest honor, to be conferred tomorrow..." The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago praised PM Modi's leadership, calling him a "transformational force who has refined the governance of India." She stated that PM Modi has modernized India's economy through his visionary and futuristic initiatives. While addressing the Indian community event in Trinidad and Tobago, Persad-Bissessar said, "What inspires this gathering most is your enduring commitment to the Indian diaspora, promoting culture, history, and the spirit of our shared journey. Mentioning the Fatel Razack, the first ship that carried Indians to Trinidad in 1845, she said, "On your first visit to our country, you were not then Prime Minister. But as part of a cultural ambassador, as part of the World Hindu Conference in 2002. Today, sir, you return as the head of a government of more than 1.4 billion people. You return as a distinguished and celebrated leader whose influence transcends boundaries. We bow to you, sir." PM Modi, Amit Shah falsely claim more allocation of funds to Tamil Nadu, alleges DMK
Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK on Friday (July 4, 2025) alleged that the BJP-led Centre is "lying" that funds provided to the State is more under its regime than during the Congress party's dispensation. The Dravidian party's official organ Murasoli in its editorial on the DMK's "Oraniyil Tamil Nadu" (Tamil Nadu as a single team) membership enrolment campaign said the party had always been reinventing itself and that is the reason for it being still young, though it has crossed the milestone of 75 years. On July 1, Mr. Stalin launched the Oraniyil Tamil Nadu (OTN) campaign and on July 3, the door-to-door visit to reach out to the people commenced. According to DMK President Stalin, the OTN encompasses election campaign, membership enrolment, the DMK government's achievements and the Centre's betrayal of Tamil Nadu as well and broadly, it is to bring together the people to protect the state's language and honour. Assembly election is due in Tamil Nadu during April 2026. The DMK's Tamil daily said people of Tamil Nadu know 'pretty well that the BJP-led Union government betrayed Tamil Nadu'. 'Betrayal alone is BJP's practice and they do not know doing good to the people. However, they divert through lies,' the Dravidian newspaper alleged. Right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, everybody in the Centre have been "lying" again and again that funds to Tamil Nadu is more under the BJP regime than during the Congress rule. "Union Home Minister Amit Shah is often saying this. They did not specify the schemes through which they are providing the funds and they cannot say that." Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has said that the Tamil Nadu government is pitching in with its funds even for the implementation of Central government schemes. 'What is the Centre's special scheme for Tamil Nadu during the past 10 years? This is the CM's question to the Union government,' the daily said. The Madurai AIIMS initiative, though announced by the Centre in the year 2015, is yet to become functional. In 2019, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the hospital. Citing a video clip recently released by authorities on the progress of the Madurai hospital project, the DMK mouthpiece said, "It has taken them six years to produce the video and this is the respect the BJP gives to the Tamil Nadu people." The DMK has commenced its OTN campaign to bring people together against such injustices to Tamil Nadu, Murasoli asserted. On July 3, the ruling DMK kickstarted its 45-day door-to-door campaign across the state to enroll as party members, 30% voters in every polling station under the "Oraniyil Tamil Nadu" membership drive.

How India-Ghana ties can guide Delhi's Africa strategy

On the return leg, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit Namibia. With these visits, the PM will have engaged with two key countries on Africa's Atlantic coast, complementing his earlier outreach to nations in East and Southern Africa. There are several key takeaways from the Ghana visit that could shape India's future partnership through the upcoming India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Symbolism and Diplomatic Signalling One notable gesture was Ghana's re-elected President John Mahama personally receiving PM Modi at the airport, breaking protocol, on Wednesday. This symbolic act underscores how countries like Ghana, irrespective of their current depth of ties with India, see India as a model for their own aspirations. Despite having substantial engagements with China, the EU, and others, Ghana's admiration for India's democratic, pluralistic, economic success is evident. This respect also explains why the PM was invited to address the Ghanaian Parliament. India-Ghana economic ties are characterised by a diversity of engagements, especially in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and skill development. These sectors not only reflect India's strengths but are also areas of immense interest across the African continent. They should serve as the fulcrum of India's wider Africa engagement. From India's perspective, there is growing interest in defence cooperation, counter-terrorism, de-radicalisation, and the export of affordable defence equipment. Ghana, as a member of Ecowas, a regional bloc of 15 West African nations including Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone members, is strategically significant. Though Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have recently exited Ecowas following military coups, India could still collaborate with Ghana on counter-terrorism efforts, especially considering the rise of extremism in the Sahel region. Building joint training and support initiatives in this area would benefit both nations and the broader region. Trade Potential and Investment Focus Bilateral trade stands at approximately $3 billion annually. While Ghana's exports to India, mainly gold, are limited in diversity, the discovery and development of critical minerals and oil reserves offer room for expansion. However, Ghana does not qualify as a Least Developed Country (LDC) and thus does not benefit from India's Duty-Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) scheme, introduced in 2008 to boost trade with African Least Developed Countries. As a result, India must explore new trade mechanisms beyond concessional preferences. Indian defence and project exports could emerge as promising growth areas. Importantly, what Ghana seeks most from India is investment. With about $2 billion in Indian investments, India is the second-largest investor in Ghana by number of projects. This success is largely driven by Indian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and professionals who have established a robust presence in the country. The growing diaspora, now around 15,000 strong, warmly welcomed PM Modi. They reflect this investment-led engagement. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India must now shift from its traditional development cooperation model, which emphasised Lines of Credit (LoCs), to a more sustainable and commercially viable model. Ghana, having approached the IMF for assistance 17 times, now faces limitations in borrowing and repayment. Hence, future cooperation should favour Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and support Indian investors without relying on sovereign guarantees. Leveraging Success Models for Capacity Building India's infrastructure contributions in Ghana, including government buildings and the Centre of Excellence in IT named after Kofi Annan, are noteworthy. Although established in 2002, before the India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) framework, this centre has been expanded under the IAFS and now stands as one of Africa's most successful and self-sustaining IT hubs. This model of capacity building, particularly through PPPs, should be replicated across the continent. Tapping into Continental Trade Integration Ghana hosts the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which, despite Covid-era delays, has been implemented, albeit sporadically. The AfCFTA allows regional markets to flourish, and Indian investors, particularly those in populous countries, now find it easier to expand across borders. India should actively tap into this opportunity to boost FDI-led growth in Africa. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Strategic Multilateral Engagement Most African nations support India's bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. However, the African Union's Ezulwini Consensus has not gained wide traction within the UN system. Ghana, as a member of the AU's Committee of Ten on this issue, plays a crucial role. Strengthening bilateral cooperation with Ghana could further India's multilateral objectives. Ghana has consistently supported the IAFS process, from President Kufuor's enthusiastic participation in the 2008 summit in Delhi to Ghana's attendance at IAFS-III in 2015, when all African heads of state were invited. Whether Ghana will participate in IAFS-IV depends on the format, whether it remains inclusive or reverts to the more limited Banjul format. Ghana remains a pivotal partner for India in West Africa. Its influence within Ecowas and the AU, combined with India's economic, diplomatic, and cultural engagement, offers a strong foundation to further elevate ties. India must capitalise on this momentum, not just through aid or lines of credit, but through sustainable investment, skill-building, innovation, and multilateral cooperation. Revitalising ties with countries like Ghana will be essential to shaping India's future in Africa.
