Is Oilers' Evan Bouchard worth $10.5 million per season? He thinks so

National Post10 hours ago
As Edmonton Oilers fans watched the NHL's free-agency window open Tuesday with the team's roster shedding its skin with major departures at forward, at least they went to bed the previous night knowing the blue line was secured.

Evan Bouchard will be a big part of the plans for the two-time reigning Western Conference champions as they look to get over the Stanley Cup hump that's seen them fall short twice in a row to the Florida Panthers in the battle of the last two teams standing.

The offensively gifted defenceman signed a four-year deal worth $42 million Monday evening, earning a raise of $6.6 million per year on the $3.9 million he had been making, after earning 67 points (14 goals, 53 assists), while averaging a team-high 23:28 of ice time in the regular season. He followed up by turning it on once again in the playoffs with 23 points (seven goals and 16 points) in 22 games to lead all defencemen in post-season scoring for the second year in a row.

But as he sat down to field questions from the media Tuesday morning, his mind wasn't on last year, or what will happen after his new contract ends after 2028-29, but the season right in front of him.

Especially with the way unfinished business has felt like it's been piling up over the past two off-seasons.

'Definitely, that's the goal for myself and the organization and everybody else in the locker-room is to win the Stanley Cup,' Bouchard said. 'A lot of teams say that, but I really do think the Oilers and myself, we have the pieces to do that.

'We've shown that in the last couple of years, we're just a fraction off and we just have to figure that out. We have the opportunity to get it done.'

As the Oilers have progressed, so too has Bouchard's own game, which he continues to work on developing into as much a two-way style as possible. Though admittedly, the defensive side has plenty of catching up to do before it can come close to the same level as his patented Bouch Bomb shot from the blue line.

'I think, definitely, that's a big thing,' Bouchard said. 'I think over the past season or two, I've really focused on the defensive side of things, especially later on in the season. Come playoff time, that's the most important thing, is to keep the puck out of the net. So, I think my game is going to keep getting better, keep growing on both sides.

'For next season, the big thing for me is consistency. The highs can be high, but the games where you're not feeling it so much, not having to be very low. So, I think consistency is going to be a big thing for me next season.'

Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mitch Marner looks forward to fitting into family culture of Vegas Golden Knights

Newly acquired Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner, left, poses for a photo with his jersey alongside Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon at City National Arena on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Las Vegas. (Chase Stevens/Las Vegas Review-Journal via AP) LAS VEGAS (AP) — Family. Winning. Culture. All three have become synonymous with the Vegas Golden Knights through their first eight years in the NHL. They matched the attributes on Mitch Marner's list and why he agreed to a sign-and-trade from Toronto to Vegas, ultimately leaving the organization that drafted him fourth overall in 2015, two years before the Knights entered the league. 'Obviously, the winning regimen they've put up through the last five years, really since they've been in the league,' Marner said during his introductory news conference Tuesday. 'The living arrangements from talking to (Max) Pacioretty and Reavo (Ryan Reaves) just through the last couple weeks, it seemed like everything was a pretty good fit for my wife and I and our new son. 'And you know, the great players they have here. It's where we wanted to be.' Of course, a $96 million contract for a maximum of eight years didn't hurt, either. Both Marner and Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon said it was important to get the deal done before July 1, when Marner would have been eligible to go anywhere else and would have been the most sought-after player beginning at noon EDT. 'This was a spot that was very high on my list,' said Marner, with his wife Stephanie and 3-month-old son Miles in the front row, along with his parents, Paul and Bonnie. 'We wanted to come here and went back to my agent and said I'm open to doing this if we can find a way to do it. A couple hours later Kelly called me and said we got a deal going on. 'We thought about going to free agency, but this is the place we want to be. We didn't want to lose that opportunity. And we want to join this hockey team.' Marner joins Vegas' talented and successful core of Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, William Karlsson, Shea Theodore and Adin Hill, which has made the playoffs three years in a row under coach Bruce Cassidy, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. 'You want to be in a place where you want to win,' Marner said. 'That's the whole goal of why we do this, you want to hoist that Stanley Cup. This team has shown that they can do it. I'm lucky enough now to hopefully bring another piece in to help bring it back here.' The deal for Marner opened up after Vegas announced veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was stepping away from hockey because his hip injury would require bilateral femur reconstruction that McCrimmon said had 'no guarantee of success.' Pietrangelo going on long-term injured reserve in part paves the way for the Golden Knights to fit Marner in under the salary cap. McCrimmon said Tuesday he doesn't believe Pietrangelo will ever play hockey again. Marner, however, has plenty to offer the Knights, as the two-time All-Star winger leaves the Maple Leafs as their fifth-highest scorer in franchise history at 741 points in the regular season on 221 goals (14th) and 520 assists (fourth). The 28-year-old's 521 assists since his rookie season (2016-17) ranks fifth in the NHL, while he ranks eighth with 741 points. 'We're getting one of the best forwards in the National Hockey League,' said McCrimmon, who also said that conversations about acquiring Marner went back to the trade deadline. 'Elite playmaker, tremendous passer. ... Our fans will love this player. He really adds to our team. He adds to our offense. It gives us another F1 star at the forward position, which we really feel is important. I think that it improves our team tremendously. 'When it appeared that Mitch would be going to free agency, he was our target. He was the player that we wanted.' AP Hockey Writers Stephen Whyno and John Wawrow contributed to this report. W.g. The electronic music festival returns to Surrey's Holland Park July 4 and 5. This year's anniversary lineup includes EDM megastars Discolsure, Kaytranada, Zedd and Tiësto as its headliners. EDM legend Tiësto is one of the headliners at the 10th anniversary of FVDED in the Park Started in 2015 with 10,000 attendees, FVDED in the Park has almost tripled in size over the past ten years. The 2024 event drew 27,500 fans each day coming to get their grooves on at one of the venue stages. Creator Alvaro Prol talked about the motivations behind the festival, its legacy, and how Surrey is a 'fun city' these days. Alvaro Prol, co-founder of Blueprint Entertainment, produces FVDED in the Park. Mark van Manen Photo by Mark van Manen / PNG Postmedia: What was the motivation behind the creation of FVDED in the Park? Alvaro Prol: FVDED the brand and FVDED in the Park have different histories. FVDED began as a mid-week EDM night that started when the genre was taking off and lasted quite a few years. The festival began at Malkin Bowl 13 or so years ago as an accessible party in the city that didn't involve having to go far away and camp. Q: What made you decide to move to Surrey? A: We knew that kids who were coming to our downtown clubs like Celebrities were from Surrey, and we wanted something that you could go to on the SkyTrain. Surrey was the spot. Everything we needed to create a value-driven event was there, and the city was really supportive of creating a destination for entertaining its young people. When you have cities and politicians that want events, and to push the envelope forward, it happens. Q: When did it become obvious that you were on to something big with FVDED in the Park? A: The year we had Jack Ü, which was the super group with Diplo and Skrillex, and Travis Scott in 2016 we knew we were booking the right things and on to something that people were digging and adopting around their summer plans. This year, I have requests from agents and fans from places like L.A. and beyond who all want to come to Surrey to check out what is a really cool event that fits right into the urban lifestyle. From the great restaurants nearby to the after-parties, Surrey is a fun city. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Q: The lineups have been pretty epic over the years. Is it challenging to bring in top-tier talent? A: We live in a very competitive world for dance music today, because it's massive everywhere. Competing with major global cities with the challenging exchange rate is very tricky. But I've been a promoter since my teens and there has never been a more exciting time for the genre, as it has come a long way and developed different streams at the same time that other genres like rap and rock have kind of fallen off a cliff. Q: So the future looks bright for FVDED in the Park to keep offering a wide variety of sounds? A: Growing up in Buenos Aires, dance music was the meat and potatoes sound you heard everywhere, from shopping centres to restaurants. And now North America is finally embracing it in the same way. Coming out of COVID, it has become the music that people want. There is no rock revival — dance music is where the creativity is coming from. As a promoter of all genres, I can say that it also draws some of the best audiences.
