NRL cult hero Willie Mason throws down stunning challenge to one of Australia's top female footy stars: 'I'd smash her'

Daily Mail16-05-2025
Footy cult hero Willie Mason may have retired in 2016 - but that hasn't stopped him from challenging NRLW flyer Jaime Chapman to a sprint race over 40 metres.
Mason, 45, was never short of confidence in his decorated career - and it seems nothing has changed as the premiership-winning forward transitions into sports podcasting with fellow ex-NRL player Justin Horo.
At the recent Magic Round in Brisbane, Mason confidently declared he would have Chapman's measure, much to the amusement of the NSW Blues winger.
'I'd smash you in the 40 (metre sprint),' Mason began.
A bemused Chapman - who will turn out for the Gold Coast Titans in the NRLW competition come July - responded 'no you wouldn't' - and then the banter went to another level between the pair.
'I told her I'm sub five (seconds) across 40 minutes,' Mason confirmed to Horo on their increasingly popular Levels Network podcast.
Horo then revealed Mason 'started throwing out stats' in a bid to rattle Chapman, but she was having none of it.
'Credit to Chappo, she held her own,' Horo told listeners.
In typical Mason style, the Clive Churchill Medal winner refused to back down, urging Chapman to organise a winner-takes-all dash.
Chapman was far from intimidated, declaring she 'will take part for content' which will appear on social media.
It comes as Chapman - who dates Dolphins NRL speedster Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow - was recently targeted in a deepfake photo attack online.
She also revealed it isn't the first time someone has used artificial intelligence (AI) to produce a doctored photograph of her.
The 23-year-old took to Instagram to slam the 'scary' and 'damaging' effect the deepfake images have had on her mental health.
'Have a good day to everyone except those who make fake AI photos of other people,' she wrote.
'AI is scary these days. 'Next time think of how damaging this can be to someone and their loved ones.
'This has happened a few times now and it needs to stop.'
Chapman's words were accompanied by what appears to be the original image that was subsequently doctored.
Before it became the subject of a deepfake, the photo showed Chapman taking a selfie as she sat on a bed in a gold bikini.

McIntosh signs off from stellar world championships with fourth gold

Aug 3 (Reuters) - Summer McIntosh capped a brilliant world championships with the 400 metres individual medley (IM) title and a fourth individual gold medal while Leon Marchand roared to victory in the men's event in Singapore on Sunday. The United States set a world record in the women's 4x100 medley relay to win the final title and ensure they topped the medals table with nine golds, one ahead of Australia. France finished third with Canada fourth, all four of their golds won by 18-year-old McIntosh, only the third swimmer to win five individual medals at a world championships, joining Michael Phelps (2007) and Sarah Sjostrom (2019). McIntosh blitzed the field in the 400 IM with a time of 4:25.78, the world record holder coming home more than seven seconds ahead of joint silver medallists Jenna Forrester of Australia and Japan's Mio Narita. China's 12-year-old prodigy Yu Zidi finished just off the podium again having also come fourth in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly. Olympic champion McIntosh's third 400 IM world title added to her 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle golds at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore, with only the 800 freestyle won by the great Katie Ledecky eluding her. Marchand, dubbed the 'French Phelps', nearly missed the 400 IM final after a slow heat in the morning but was back to his best in the evening, clocking 4:04.73 to finish well clear of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita, the Paris Olympics runnerup behind Marchand. It was a stripped-back programme from Paris where Marchand won four individual titles but he made it count with the 200 IM world record on the way to the title earlier in the week. Two years after Tunisia's Ahmed Hafnaoui won the 800 and 1,500 freestyle at the Fukuoka championships, compatriot Ahmed Jaouadi completed the double by winning the 1,500 in 14:34.41 ahead of German Sven Schwarz and American Olympic champion Bobby Finke. Jaouadi shaved nearly nine seconds off his personal best and said it was a struggle. "I wasn't the only one. My body was in a lot of pain," he added. "But through my mind is that I want this medal and I want to win it." The big names may dominate the headlines but Australian relay stalwart Meg Harris grabbed the spotlight for herself as she won 50 freestyle gold in 24.02 ahead of Chinese duo Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28). The 23-year-old Harris clinched her first individual title on the global stage after sharing two Olympic and five world relay golds in the last four years. No Russian athletes competed at last year's world championships in Doha but the nation's swimmers have racked up medals in Singapore under a neutral flag. Russians were allowed to compete on condition they have not publicly supported the invasion of Ukraine and have no affiliation to the Russian military. Russian Kliment Kolesnikov stormed to the men's 50 backstroke title in 23.68, just 0.13 off his world record, while compatriot Pavel Samusenko took a silver along with South African Pieter Coetze, each finishing in 24.17. Russian swimmers then combined to win a shock gold in the men's 4x100 medley, giving the world record (3:26.78) a huge shake with a time of 3:26.93, a second clear of France. With the U.S. men taking bronze it was up to the nation's women to secure top spot on the medal table in the final event of the night by beating Australia. They did just that and in some style, Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske combining to set a world record of 3:49.34, improving on the U.S. mark of 3:49.63 set at the Paris Games. World record holder Ruta Meilutyte earlier powered to the 50 breaststroke gold in 29.55, nearly half a second clear of China's Tang Qianting. It was the Lithuanian's fourth successive world title in the event since returning from a two-year ban for anti-doping violations. Retiring American Lilly King, who won the 100 breaststroke at the Rio 2016 Games, bowed out fifth in her last individual event.

No invite? Christian Wilkins skips Logies red carpet and heads straight for afterparty - after copping backlash for previously wearing a dress to the awards show

Christian Wilkins skipped the Logies this year - but that didn't stop him heading out to the afterparties to mingle with the A-list. The 29-year-old son of entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was nowhere to be seen on the red carpet at The Star in Sydney. While his father, dressed in a tux, posed alongside the media wall with some celebrity buddies, Christian opted not to attend the ceremony. Instead, Christian dressed up to the nines at home, ready to party into the night with the night's stars. In photos shared on Instagram Stories, Christian showed off his look for the night, which included a skimpy, black and white sequin top that showed off lots of skin. Christian also had a full face of makeup, courtesy of a celebrity makeup artist, and had his blonde locks styled. 'Logies afterparty glam,' he captioned a glamorous selfie shared ahead of the event. It's unclear if Christian was snubbed from the Logies or if he declined an invite this year. The model and actor has certainly attracted controversy for his earlier appearance at the iconic awards show. In 2022, he attended the Logies wearing a dress, which resulted in horrific comments from cruel trolls. The socialite told ABC's Insight that he received thousands of trolling comments after he dared to defy gender stereotypes by sporting a white backless gown on the red carpet. 'People [were] telling me to OD, people telling me that I'm a disgrace,' Wilkins said. 'I mean, I was very surprised to find out that the patriarchy was so flimsy that it could be taken down by a piece of white silk.' He also praised his parents, entertainment guru Richard Wilkins and flight attendant Michelle Burke, for continually supporting his gender expression. In 2022, Christian attended the Logies wearing a dress (pictured), which resulted in horrific comments from cruel trolls 'As a kid, I always, kind of, loved anything that was pink and sparkly… I was never necessarily encouraged to wear dresses. But my parents said, if I wanted to, they would absolutely allow me to,' he explained. Indeed, Christian's father Richard praised his son for expressing his unique style at the Logies, writing on Instagram: 'To anyone who dares to suggest that I am in any way "ashamed" of my son Christian... for whatever reason… You are wrong!' 'I could not be more proud!! He is an exceptional human being who will leave his stamp on the world long after his detractors have disappeared,' the Nine presenter continued. 'I love you unconditionally,' he added.
