Pete Crow-Armstrong out of Chicago Cubs lineup Monday with a bruised right knee and RHP Ben Brown recalled

The Chicago Cubs are hopeful Pete Crow-Armstrong's absence from the lineup will be limited. Entering Monday's series opener against the Kansas City Royals, Crow-Armstrong had started all but one game for the Cubs this season as the 23-year-old All-Star became a staple in the middle of their order. His ability to play every day while delivering elite defense and taking his offensive production to another level this year has been valuable. However, a bruised right knee kept Crow-Armstrong out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals. Manager Craig Counsell described Crow-Armstrong as day-to-day and hopes he is back in the lineup Tuesday. The knee felt a little swollen after Crow-Armstrong woke up Monday, Counsell said, so they wanted to give him the day off. It's not exactly certain when he banged it up during Sunday's game against Boston, but, looking at replays, Counsell believes it likely happened during the rundown in the second inning when he awkwardly slid into third base. Crow-Armstrong was tagged out by Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, after which he and Counsell argued that Crochet obstructed the base on the sequence. 'It's why it was a blocking-the-bag situation because the slide was clearly altered,' Counsell said Monday. 'If you watch the slide and replay, it's not a normal-looking slide, and further reason that was blocking the bag.' Seiya Suzuki made his first career start in center field Monday night with Crow-Armstrong sidelined. Counsell opted to go with Suzuki at the position rather than Ian Happ, who has played 240 big-league games in center field, including 199 starts, though none since 2022 (three games, 12 innings). Both players got limited game reps in center field during spring training. 'This is not a scenario we want to consider a lot, obviously, just because we want Pete in there,' Counsell said. 'In the end, just leaving Ian where he's at and just putting Seiya out there — Seiya has been running around there a little bit during (batting) practices and stuff like that.' The Cubs opted for an opener Monday with reliever Ryan Brasier getting the start. Right-hander Ben Brown was recalled before the game, giving the Cubs a multi-inning option to follow Brasier. The Cubs optioned reliever Ethan Roberts. The Cubs sent Brown to Triple-A Iowa last month to give him a reset and a break in his workload to help manage his innings. Brown made two starts with Iowa and allowed one run over nine innings. 'He pitched very well, very efficient in both outings, did exactly what he wanted to do,' Counsell said. 'There's not a new pitch, there's nothing new happening there. He's got to execute better, it's as simple as that.'

Rich Hill returning to MLB as a 45-year-old on record 14th team

Rich Hill is giving Father Time a run for his money. The 45-year-old southpaw is heading back to the big leagues after getting called up by the Royals, FanSided's Robert Murray reported Monday. When he makes his debut with Kansas City, he'll have played for 14 different MLB teams, tying Edwin Jackson for the most a player has joined in a career. Advertisement He'll also become the oldest player in the league, beating out the Giants' Justin Verlander, who is 42. 3 Rich Hill last pitched in the majors for the Red Sox in 2024. AP In the 21 years since he broke into the big leagues with the Cubs in 2005, Hill has managed to remain a major-leaguer despite never becoming an All-Star. He has had several particularly impressive seasons over the years, though, including a terrific 2016 campaign, when he posted a 2.12 ERA across 110.1 innings with the Athletics and Dodgers. Advertisement The Milton, Mass. native continued to thrive with Los Angeles from 2017-2019, posting a sub-3.00 ERA in each of those three seasons. Hill's numbers have worsened in the last few years as he's entered into his mid-40s, but he has remained a capable arm. 3 Rich Hill #44 of the Boston Red Sox reacts during the seventh inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on August 29, 2024. Getty Images Advertisement 3 The Royals will be Rich Hill's 14th MLB team. AP He notched a 4.76 ERA in 119 innings with the Pirates in 2023 before a brief, and brutal, stint to close that season with the Padres. He pitched just 3.2 major-league innings with the Red Sox last season before getting signed to the minor-league deal in Kansas City. Hill has been pitching with the Royals' Triple-A squad in Omaha this season, posting a 5.22 ERA in 11 starts, although that figure is bloated by a few particularly poor outings. Advertisement He can pitch for Kansas City as soon as Tuesday, and could carve out a role for himself with Cole Ragans (shoulder), Alec Marsh (shoulder) and Michael Lorenzen (oblique) sidelined. Standing at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Hill primarily relies on a four-pitch mix of a four-seamer, sweeper, cutter and curveball, according to Baseball Savant.

Pete Crow-Armstrong's injury serves as trade deadline reminder for Cubs

CHICAGO — All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is currently sidelined with a bruised right knee, giving the Cubs yet another item to consider in the final 10 days before the July 31 trade deadline. Known for his hard-charging style of play, Crow-Armstrong felt something on a slide during Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Wrigley Field. The Cubs penciled in Seiya Suzuki as the starting center fielder in Monday's lineup against the Kansas City Royals, hoping their primary designated hitter can be a temporary solution. Advertisement 'He just banged it up and woke up and felt a little swelling,' manager Craig Counsell said. 'We're just going to try to give him the day today, and hopefully back in there tomorrow.' Still only 23 years old, Crow-Armstrong has emerged as a legitimate National League MVP candidate with his explosive combination of power (26 home runs), speed (28 stolen bases) and Gold Glove-caliber defense. He played in 98 of the club's first 99 games, covering 870-plus innings in center field and routinely making the difficult plays look easy with his instincts and initial bursts. For a team with World Series aspirations, Suzuki is not viewed as a viable everyday center fielder. Even before this issue popped up, the Cubs acknowledged their group of position players had been remarkably healthy. Adding more depth was always going to be a priority at the trade deadline. 'This is not a scenario we want to consider a lot, obviously,' Counsell said, 'just because we want Pete in there.' The track record shows that the Cubs typically add an extra center fielder during a playoff race. While current president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer worked as Theo Epstein's general manager in Chicago, the Cubs made midseason moves to acquire Austin Jackson (2015), Leonys Martin (2017) and Cameron Maybin (2020) for depth and experience. Chicago is already exploring the trade market for potential upgrades that could include a starting pitcher, a late-inning reliever and a third baseman. There is no way to completely replace Crow-Armstrong's energy and production – and this could wind up being only a short-term issue – but the club would be interested in another insurance policy. The Cubs believe Crow-Armstrong injured his right knee on Sunday's rundown in the second inning, which led to Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet covering third base. Advertisement 'He's not completely sure what had happened,' Counsell said. 'But if you look at the replays, it was likely on that one. That's why it was a blocking-the-bag situation because the slide was clearly altered. If you watch the slide and replay, it's not a normal-looking slide. And further reason that it was blocking the bag.'
