In a Word...Anticipation

Surely one of the great and underappreciated pleasures in life is anticipation. That glorious expectation of something good about to happen. It is how I feel towards the end of April every year.
Just ahead lie my two favourite months, May and June, when this country can be at its freshest and most spectacular, temperatures rise, the hawthorn comes into full, sweet bloom, and the evenings continue to lengthen.
Sometimes I think I prefer these end-of-April days, looking forward to all of that, than actually experiencing May and June. Because, when living through those two months, there is an accompanying sadness in knowing that they are also slipping away.
It is when I can sympathise with that line from Patrick Pearse's The Wayfarer, that 'the beauty of the world hath made me sad, this beauty that will pass.'

It is why, as a child, my favourite day of the year over time became Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. There was the excitement of all that fuss, preparation and expectation rather than having it all laid before you, as on Christmas Day, only to realise as the afternoon wore on that it would be an eternity of 364 days before you could experience any of it again.
It is why, generally, I prefer and enjoy the journey rather than the destination itself. The adventure is in getting there, wherever or whatever that might be. Like life itself, the living of which is always better than its end.
You might remember that Guinness advertisement from the 1990s where actor Joe McKinney dances around impatiently to the quirky tune Guaglione as he waits for his pint to settle, culminating in the blissful moment when he brings that perfect creation to his lips, leaving us to imagine the joy of the rest.
It set off a dance craze, the tune knocked Riverdance off the number one spot in Ireland and reached number two in the UK, Guinness sales soared, Joe McKinney had to go to the US as, so typecast had he become as 'the Dancing Man', he could not get any other acting work in Ireland, and the ad itself (created in Dublin by the Arks agency) won a succession of awards.
It was titled 'Anticipation'.

It was the second major championship of the 29-year-old's season and the fourth of his career. And while there was something nearly robotic about his performance on the course, he let his hair down a bit after lifting the Claret Jug. Pictures on social media show the world number one enjoying a pint of Guinness not long after he was crowned the Champion Golfer of the Year. On the eve of the tournament, Scheffler admitted that his great success in the game has left him feeling unfulfilled. 'There's a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfil them in life, and you get there, you get to No 1 in the world, and they're like what's the point?' he said. 'I really do believe that, because what is the point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad? 'That's something that I wrestle with on a daily basis. Showing up at the Masters every year, it's like, why do I want to win this golf tournament so badly? "Why do I want to win the Open Championship so badly? I don't know. Because, if I win, it's going to be awesome for two minutes. "Then we're going to get to the next week and it's: 'Hey, you won two majors this year; how important is it for you to win the FedExCup playoffs?' And we're back here again.' He added: 'To get to live out your dreams is very special, but at the end of the day I'm not out here to inspire the next generation of golfer. 'I'm not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world, because what's the point? This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart.'

Dublin pubs Grogan's and the Gravediggers named among top 25 bars in Europe

John Kavanagh's, known as The Gravediggers, in Glasnevin, and Grogan's on South William Street, both feature in the Top 100 Bars in Europe 2025 list, as chosen by the European Bar Guide. Each bar is rated for choice/quality of drinks; style/décor; atmosphere/character; value for money; and amenities/events. The Gravediggers, beside Glasnevin Cemetery, ranked highest of the four Irish entries at number 14. The guide praised it as 'a timeless, characterful pub known for its outstanding Guinness and weathered wooden interiors'. The authors describe the Gravediggers as a 'historical masterpiece', offering an authentic and intimate setting that feels like 'stepping into a painting' – quiet and calm by day, warm and buzzing by night. 'While the drinks menu is fairly standard, the pint of Guinness is rarely better, and at a more affordable price than in the city centre,' it said. 'Less touristy due to its suburban setting, the pub is loved by locals and admired for its genuine atmosphere and old-world aesthetic.' Grogan's, ranked 24th, is described as a 'beloved Dublin institution' with an unvarnished charm and electric energy. Known for its atmosphere, iconic toasties and outdoor seating, the guide notes that finding a seat can be a challenge, but is worth the wait as the vibe is what sets it apart. Two other Irish pubs also made the list, both based in Dingle, Co Kerry. Tig Bhric in Ballyferriter comes in at 28th, described as 'a small West Kerry brewery with cask beer in a wonderfully cosy pub with views of the peninsula'. Dick Mack's on Green Street ranks 17th, praised for its blend of 'brewery, wall of whisky, haberdashery, garden, good craic and good song'. The number one bar in Europe, according to the guide, is La Fleur en Papier Doré in Brussels, praised as 'hugely atmospheric whether quiet or busy', with a pantry-style backroom and unusual bar area.

Four Irish pubs have earned spots in the prestigious European Bar Guide's Top 100 Bars in Europe for 2025 – with two making it into the coveted top 25.
