Chelsea: Can Nicolas Jackson play again at Club World Cup after 'stupid' red card?
Jackson had been on the pitch for only four minutes in the second half when he was sent off for a nasty studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas.

This being the Senegal international's second red card in his last four matches across all competitions left former Blues midfielder Mikel John Obi in disbelief.
Speaking on DAZN after the game, Mikel said: "It's unbelievable, unbelievable. A stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. I don't know what's going through his head. You come into into the game, your team needs to get back into the game, and he does that.
"He did that in the [Premier] League game at Newcastle, a very important game where we need to win to qualify for the Champions League [which Chelsea lost]. He got a red card, and now he's done it again. You can't keep making mistakes."
The 24-year-old received an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of the final group-stage clash against Esperance Sportive de Tunis.

However, FIFA's disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and deemed it serious foul play and extended the ban.
"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Chelsea's player Nicolas Jackson who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match between his team and CR Flamengo..." FIFA said in a statement.
"(A) 2-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed."
So, as a result of an extended two-match ban, Jackson will also miss Chelsea's potential last-16 tie if they advance. This means he will only feature in the Club World Cup again if the Blues reach the quarter-final.

Jackson did apologise for his actions on social media after the match.

He wrote: 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down.
'Another red card and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation.
'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility.
'I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.'

Yankees trade catcher Alex Jackson to Orioles as Austin Wells breaks out of slump
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free The Yankees traded away another organizational catcher Sunday, shipping Alex Jackson from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to the Orioles. Jackson is again a big leaguer and joins a group of former Yankees catchers or catching prospects that includes Luis Torrens, Jose Trevino, Carlos Narváez and Kyle Higashioka, the Yankees stockpiling — and in many cases, then off-loading — capable catchers. They have felt comfortable trading so many chiefly because of their belief in Austin Wells, who is now reminding of his upside. 'The last two days, I feel like he has swung the bat like Austin Wells,' manager Aaron Boone said after Wells launched his second home run in as many days, a mini run that has followed 50 consecutive at-bats without a dinger. 3 The Yankees traded Alex Jackson to the Orioles. Getty Images Wells has emerged, first smacking a solo shot against Frankie Montas on Saturday before demolishing a shot to the second deck in right field against Zach Pop for the game's first run in what became a 6-4 Yankees victory at Citi Field on Sunday. On a Yankees team that had a rough June and a rough start to July, Wells' offensive struggles have stood out. He entered the Subway Series in a 6-for-37 rut with 11 strikeouts, two walks and a .436 OPS in his previous 12 games. Ben Rice had started to see some time behind the plate, and the circulation issue that popped up in Wells' index finger became cause for alarm. 3 Austin Wells rounds the bases during the Yankees-Mets game on July 6, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST But Wells has said the finger issue has not affected him on the field or at the plate, and perhaps he has found something in his swing. Beyond the home run, he added an RBI groundout in the fourth and fought through an eight-pitch at-bat in the eighth that ended with a sharp single to right. 'I think there's more — I expect more — of him offensively,' Boone said of Wells, who bumped his OPS to .728. 'And I even said something to him after the game, like: 'That's you. Let's go.' ' In exchange for Jackson, the Yankees received international signing bonus pool money and a player to be named later or cash. Jackson, a 29-year-old who owned a .772 OPS in 44 minor league games this season, replaces another former Yankees catcher in Gary Sánchez, whom Baltimore placed on the injured list with a knee injury. Max Fried (five-plus innings, three earned runs on six hits and a walk) strongly argued with home plate umpire John Bacon after he was charged with a pitch-clock violation in the first inning that made a 2-2 count against Francisco Lindor a 3-2 count. According to Fried, the on-deck hitter (Juan Soto) was standing in front of one timer. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS So he glanced to the timer on the third base side, saw one second remaining and lifted his leg. 'I take pride in not giving up free pitches and free balls,' said Fried, who bounced back to strike out Lindor. 'Just in that spot, I felt like they called it a little too quick.' Giancarlo Stanton's 118 mph double in the fourth inning was his 58th batted ball that left his bat at least that speed since 2015, the most in the majors. Second place: Oneil Cruz with 19. Before the game, the Yankees re-signed Geoff Hartlieb to a major league deal, added the righty to the roster and optioned lefty Jayvien Sandridge to SWB.

Alvarez's tiebreaking goal gives Mexico 2-1 win over U.S. for 10th Gold Cup title
HOUSTON (AP) — Edson Álvarez scored a tiebreaking goal in the 77th minute after a video review reversed an offside call, and Mexico beat the United States 2-1 on Sunday night for its record 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title. Chris Richards put the U.S. ahead in the fourth minute, heading in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick for the second time in the tournament, but Raúl Jiménez tied the score in the 27th with his third goal of this Gold Cup. Mexico was awarded the free kick when Diego Luna fouled Alexis Vega on a flank. Johan Vásquez flicked the restart across the goalmouth and Álvarez burst past the defence, redirecting the ball from three yards just inside Matt Freese's far post. While the play was initially called offside, the goal was awarded by the VAR, and Mexico defended its title from 2023 while improving to 6-2 in Gold Cup finals against the U.S. Patrick Agyemang had a chance two minutes into stoppage time but he didn't make good contact on his short-range shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Luis Malagón. 'We're disappointed obviously to not come away with a win,' U.S. captain Tim Ream said. A sellout crowd of 70,925 at NRG Stadium was about 70 per cent pro-Mexico and booed U.S. players when they walked out for pre-game warm-ups. Mexico dominated with 60 per cent possession and had 12 corner kicks to none for the Americans. This was the final competitive match for the U.S. and Mexico before co-hosting next year's World Cup with Canada. The U.S., which has seven Gold Cup titles but none since 2021, used a starting lineup with only a handful of players currently projected as World Cup starters, missing regulars due to vacation, injuries and the Club World Cup. Coach Mauricio Pochettino used their absence to evaluate players who could push for starting jobs during the friendlies this fall and next spring, and Luna, Agyemang and Freese emerged as contenders for World Cup roster spots. Richards put the U.S. in front when he headed Berhalter's free kick from about 40 yards off the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down and just crossed the goal line. Jiménez scored his 42nd international goal, third-most in Mexican history. He burst past the defence and one-timed the pass from Marcel Ruiz, beating Freese from about 10 yards on a shot that might have nicked Ream. Jiménez celebrated by grabbing a Mexico No. 20 jersey with 'DIOGO J' in honour of Diogo Jota, his former Wolverhampton teammate who died in a car crash Thursday in Spain. Jiménez ran to a corner, sat down with the jersey and mimicked playing a video game. ___ AP soccer:
