Dodgers 2-way star Shohei Ohtani to start on mound Wednesday. Team goes to 6-man rotation
Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game.
With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation.
They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation.
'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said.
In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes.
Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while.
'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.'
Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski.
The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees.
He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness.
'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.'
Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen.
'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.'
To make room on the roster, LA optioned right-handers Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez.

Um, so I'll carry the burden here. I'll be the first one to point out how it's not gonna work out for Nico Collins. Here's how it's not gonna work out for Nico Collins. He gets hurt, right? He misses time every single year with soft tissue injuries, that could be an issue. He is definitely someone with an injury history and if he bangs you because of injuries, well, it's happened before. That is #1. Number 2, it is a very problematic offensive line, no way around it. I don't know that it can get out of the bottom 10 in the league. I think if it's the 20th best offensive line in the league, maybe that's good enough for the Texans unit to still be fine, but that's a concern. Uh, they've added some targets. Now, I don't really care about the target competition. Guys like Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins, I love Jaylen Noel, but none of those guys are Jaylen Noel. I love those guys, but they're not eating into Nico's target total. The other thing is maybe he just continues to run out as a true X receiver, doesn't really get a lot of layups, and those layups go to Kirk or one of these other guys. So it's possible to pick the nits here, Scott, but again, this might be one that neither of our hearts are in there considering he's our 8th overall player. Yeah, we love Nico Collins on the show, we always have. And over the last two years, 11.1 yards per target, that's elite, dominant player, he just hasn't played that full season yet. We'll see how the Texans do with their new offensive coordinator, Nick Haley, but look, Bobby Slovak did a lot of things wrong last year, and you can't, Nico Collins is just, you can't screw that up. And even if the offensive line is problematic, I always feel like when an offensive line is bad, you can mask it more in pass blocking than you can in run blocking. So, they're going to, there's no competition for him. There's a lot of interesting guys you can talk up. Some people are Kirk guys, they drafted two rookie receivers from the same college. We'll we'll see if one of those guys pops, but, um, with Collins, the only thing I can see going around with him is that he gets hurt. And also, his touchdown rate hasn't been maybe what you'd expect of a player that dominant. That, I never, I'm never going to blame Nico Collins for that. I mean, just like I never blamed Terry McLaurin for that. I never blamed DJ Moore for that. It's just one of those things, but Nico Collins is ready to dominate. He should be a first round pick. Cubs place right-hander Michael Soroka on injured list with shoulder strain, recall Pearson
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Michael Soroka on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a shoulder strain after he pitched just two innings in his first game with his new team. Chicago also recalled right-hander Nate Pearson from Triple-A Iowa prior to its matchup with Cincinnati. Before Tuesday's game with the Reds, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he wasn't sure of the extent of Soroka's injury. 'We did imaging,' Counsell said. 'Still waiting on the doctor.' The Cubs acquired Soroka in a trade with the Nationals last week to help fill a gap in their rotation, with Jameson Taillon and Javier Assad working their way back from injuries. But Soroka departed Monday night's 3-2 loss to Cincinnati with shoulder soreness on his 28th birthday. With Soroka out, Counsell had no concrete plans on adjusting the team's rotation. We all actually have him ranked a little bit lower than this from the overall ranks perspective. You've got him not too far behind number 9. I've got him 10. Boone actually has him ranked himself. Uh, he's got him at 15. So maybe Boone's got the most concern. About Derrick Henry, I actually think the the negative case for Derrick Henry is easy to make, Scott. It's that Father Time is undefeated, but any other reason to be concerned about Derrick Henry? Yeah, Henry, what is it? 11th. This is a guy who worked like crazy in high school, but people weren't tackling him that much. He was giving up more punishment than he probably absorbed than he plays in college, at least when he first went. To Tennessee, they kind of soft pedaled him early in the career, you know, had other guys they wanted to use, it seemed to make sense, but he's led the league in carries in 4 of the last 6 seasons. Not going to catch a lot of passes. He's, I, I think he actually could. Teams just gave up on that a long time ago. I don't know why Henry in space would be such a bad idea. You don't need him to run intricate routes. Just another look, get him tackled by the lesser people, the lighter people on the defense, but uh, you know, Lamar Jackson, for all of his rushing chops, he is not a touchdown guy. So nobody's surprised Henry scored 16 touchdowns last year. He's basically got a floor of what, 11 or 12 in a healthy season and he could easily get back up to that 16 level again. It's just a matter of the mileage. At some point, every player is gonna feel it, the efficiency is gonna go down. It didn't go down last year, 5.9 yards per carry. That's what a mobile quarterback does for you. And you know, the Todd Monken offense, this Baltimore offense that we love, it hasn't always translated in the playoffs, but man, are the Ravens an absolute blast to watch offensively. It's just how do you feel about this is a guy. He is age 28, age 29, is age 30 the year to get worried about. He's in his age 31 season and he's been working really hard the last handful of seasons. So at some point, you might get nervous about that. But I feel like he's already scored, you know, 10 or 12 touchdowns to start the season. You know, Derrick Henry is such a consistent scorer. He's gonna be, if you're like me and want somebody to do something every week, Derrick Henry's gonna be one of those guys. I'm actually pretty confident about drafting him, and he's that archetype of a player I generally wouldn't draft because I'd just be, I'd rather be a year earlier than a year late on guys. I just feel like I'm always breaking the rules for Derrick Henry. Close
