Students should develop value-based identity, says Thangal
He was here on Sunday evening to open a public event held at the Muthalakkulam Ground as part of the culmination of the district conference of the IUML-affiliated Muslim Students Federation (MSF).
The Thangal said that though technology had advanced a lot in the modern era, it would not be able to replace human values such as honesty. He urged students to develop a sense of social responsibility irrespective of the professions they choose in life. The Thangal also claimed that the MSF was making its presence on campuses across the State.
Addressing the gathering, P.K. Kunhalikutty, IUML national general secretary, exhorted students to work towards unseating the Left Democratic Front government in the State and the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. He alleged that the achievements made during the tenure of the previous United Democratic Front government had been been lost in the past 10 years. Mr. Kunhalikutty claimed that the educational sector in Kozhikode and Malappuram had been dragged backwards by at least 10 years. The State government had not taken steps to improve the educational infrastructure in these places, he added.
Earlier, addressing the State conference of the IUML-aligned Confederation of Kerala College Teachers, the Thangal said that the IUML had always strived to ensure education for underprivileged people. He also highlighted the role played by the late C.H. Mohammed Koya in setting up the University of Calicut.
Opening the State conference of the Differently Abled People's League, the Thangal said that the government should not compromise on the rights of the differently abled population. He demanded that more schemes be implemented for their welfare.

Iraqi police clash with paramilitary fighters who stormed government building
A gun battle erupted in Iraq's capital on Sunday between police and fighters from a state-sanctioned paramilitary force that includes Iran-backed groups, killing at least one police officer and leading to the arrest of 14 fighters, authorities said. The clash broke out in Baghdad's Karkh district after a group of fighters from the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) stormed an Agriculture Ministry building as a new director was being sworn in, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. The PMF, known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi, is an umbrella group of mostly Shi'ite paramilitary factions that was formally integrated into Iraq's state security forces and includes several groups aligned with Iran. According to the Interior Ministry, the PMF fighters burst into the building during an administrative meeting, causing panic among staff who alerted police. Security sources and three employees at the scene said the fighters had wanted to stop the office's former director from being replaced. A statement from the Joint Operations Command, which reports directly to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, confirmed that the detainees were PMF members and had been referred to the judiciary. At least one police officer was killed and nine others were wounded, police and hospital sources said. Sudani ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the incident, the command said. The arrested fighters belong to 'PMF brigades 45 and 46', the statement added. Both brigades are affiliated with Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned Iraqi armed group, according to Iraqi security officials and sources within the PMF.

Vellappally Natesan slams Satheeshan
Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Saturday strongly criticised Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, calling him the worst Opposition leader in the State. While inaugurating a programme organised by the SNDP Yogam at Pandappally near Muvattupuzha, he said Mr. Satheesan is anti-Ezhava. 'He is in no position to teach me about Guru Dharma,' said Mr. Natesan. 'Mr. Satheesan is incapable of leading the United Democratic Front (UDF). The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will come to power for the third time in the State,' he said. 'Mr. Satheesan is trying to ensure his position and is all set to become the next Chief Minister. However, he is does not know how to mange issues in a better manner,' said Mr. Natesan. . On Malappuram 'Some groups are trying to portray me as anti-Muslim when I speak the truth. Ezhava community in Malappuram is facing discrimination, even in the education sector. Most of the institutions there belong to the Muslim community. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is a communal political party. Are there any other community members on the personal staff of the IUML representatives? If it is a secular party, will they field a Brahmin community member on their seats in the next election?' asked Mr. Natesan. 'There is no problem when Christian or Nair community members raise caste-related issues. However, when the Ezhava community speaks about such issues, a big controversy is created,' he said. Mr. Natesan further alleged that the Congress party sidelined former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Sudhakaran because he belongs to the SNDP community. Many members of the Ezhava community take up the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme works. They lack employment opportunities and are forced to take up such jobs, he said. This situation should be rectified, Mr. Natesan added. In response, Mr. Satheesan said that Mr. Natesan was saying things that the Guru would not approve of. Communal utterings, regardless of where they come from, should be opposed. Around 52% of the voters in his constituency [North Paravur] belonged to the Ezhava community, and he held a very good relationship with them, Mr. Satheesan added.
