Iowa football QB receives underwhelming spot in CBS' Big Ten rankings
From Spencer Petras to Alex Padilla to Cade McNamara, it's been a plethora of swings and misses for the Hawkeyes at the position over the past five years. And now Mark Gronowski enters the fold, a transfer from South Dakota State that has everyone excited.
While it's certainly fair to question how his play will translate from the FCS to the FBS level, most Iowa fans believe that Gronowski might be the answer at the quarterback position that they've been looking for.
CBS Sports, on the other hand, isn't so high on Gronowski entering 2025.
David Cobb of CBS Sports put together his ranking of every Big Ten quarterback heading into the 2025 college football season. Cobb's placement of Gronowski on the list is a lot lower than many Hawkeye fans would want or expect.
Where is Mark Gronowski on CBS' Big Ten quarterbacks ranking?
Cobb ultimately placed Gronowski at 12th in his ranking, meaning he thinks Gronowski will be in the bottom third of all quarterbacks in the conference this season.
Gronowski led South Dakota State to consecutive FCS national titles while proving himself to be a dual-threat talent during a four-year stint as the starter. He's a highly decorated and grizzled veteran with a 49-6 career record, and he will be an automatic upgrade over what the Hawkeyes have trotted out at quarterback over the past several years. Limitations with the supporting cast and system will cap his production, but Gronowski will be a breath of fresh air for the program. - Cobb, CBS Sports
Gronowski is ranked just ahead of Billy Edwards Jr. of Wisconsin and just behind Aidan Chiles of Michigan State. Drew Allar of Penn State is at the top of the list, while Drake Lindsey of Minnesota brings up the rear.
While Iowa fans may not agree with this ranking from Cobb, he does make a solid point about the supporting cast around Gronowski. If the Hawkeyes want to achieve their goals this season, they'll need some skill position players to step up and elevate their production. Whether that's Reece Vander Zee, Addison Ostrenga, Kamari Moulton, or someone under the radar, it'll be critical for Iowa to have its supporting cast do everything they can to help Gronowski.
Gronowski will get a chance to outperform his ranking when the 2025 season kicks off on Aug. 30 against Albany. Until then, questions will remain about his ability to excel at the FBS level.

Elite 2025 RHP and Texas A&M commit signs with the Milwaukee Brewers
Texas A&M's 2026 baseball roster won't include another top 2025 prospect, as elite RHP Chase Bentley, who was selected in the 19th Round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, has reportedly signed with the Franchise for a surprising $757,500, which is reportedly a record for a player selected in the 19th Round. Bentley joins several Texas A&M 2025 signees who have opted to sign with MLB teams. Like junior outfielder Jace LaViolette, who was selected 27th overall by the Cleveland Guardians, and signed signed for over $4 million, Bentley's future is extremely bright, and while many, including myself expected him to suit up with the Aggies next season, turning down more than half a million to develop in the minor leagues before being called up would be even more surprising. Texas A&M's 2026 pitching rotation will likely include Weston Moss, Shane Sdao, and another new addition from the transfer portal, while the bullpen features several young but intriguing names, including Caden McCoy, who developed down the stretch last season. However, closer Josh Stewart, who was granted a medical exemption for the 2026 season, will immediately boost what was a shaky position after his injury. Iowa basketball star Bennett Stirtz earns invite to Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp
Elite 😎#Hawkeyes Before his first year with the Hawkeyes after transferring from Drake in the offseason, Iowa basketball senior Bennett Stirtz earned an invitation to the Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp. Stirtz is one of 12 student-athletes to earn an invite to the elite camp, led by 20-year NBA vet and 12-time All-Star Chris Paul. The camp teaches attendees what it takes to play at the highest level and how to prepare for the hurdles they will face in college and then in the transition to the NBA. During his lone season at Drake last year, Stirtz was tabbed as the Missouri Valley Conference Larry Bird Player of the Year and Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year after leading the league in scoring (19.2), steals (2.21), and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.86), while ranking second in assists (5.7). Stirtz led the NCAA in minutes played, averaging 39:22 per game. Through his incredible junior season stats, he was an All-America honoree by Field of 68, Andy Katz, the Associated Press, and the USBWA during the 2024-25 season. Stirtz was also a finalist for both the Lou Henson Award (top mid-major player) and Riley Wallace Award (most impactful transfer). Stirtz is one of 12 newcomers on the 14-player Hawkeye roster under first-year head coach Ben McCollum, who has assembled an Iowa transfer class that is rated as the eighth-best class in the nation by 247Sports.
