Two Los Angeles men charged for robbing people of winnings as they left Southern California casinos
Juan Gabriel Gonzalez, 22, and Dereck Nathan Lopez, 21, were both charged with multiple counts of interference and attempted interference with commerce by robbery, which is also known as a Hobbs Act crime. They were also charged with one count of Hobbs Act conspiracy and multiple counts of using firearms during a crime of violence. Lopez was also charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Prosecutors said that Lopez is in state custody and will appear in federal court in coming weeks, while Lopez made his initial appearance on Friday.
The men are said to have entered local casinos under false names so they could "hunt gamblers appearing to win or cash-in a large number of chips," the release from the U.S. Department of Justice said.
"Lopez, Gonzalez and other co-conspirators then followed the victims' vehicles from the casino, ambushed them on the highway, brandished firearms, smashed the vehicle's windows, demanded money or chips, and fled," the release further noted.
They say that there were at least 15 different incidents, including three of which happened on one single night.
The release says that before one of the robberies, Lopez can be seen on casino surveillance video footage celebrating a gambling victory with a victim he was scouting. He high-fived the victim after the win, court documents said.
"Within an hour, Lopez's co-conspirators had blocked in her vehicle, brandishing firearms, and stolen $21,000 in cash," the release said.
In another incident, the group stole at least $130,000 in winnings, prosecutors noted.
If convicted as charged, both Lopez and Gonzalez face a statutory maximum sentence of life in federal prison, according to prosecutors.
They say that Lopez was charged in Dec. 2023 of being a felon in possession of three firearms and over 30 rounds of ammunition found at his home. He is not permitted to possess a firearm or ammo because of his criminal history, which includes a grand theft conviction in San Bernardino Superior Court in Nov. 2023.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Los Angles Police Department, California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Justice Bureau of Gambling Control and the Montebello Police Department.

Social media companies not liable for 2022 mass shooting, New York appeals court rules
Social media companies not liable for 2022 mass shooting, New York appeals court rules (Reuters) -Several social media companies should not be held liable for helping an avowed white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in 2022 at a Buffalo, New York grocery store, a divided New York state appeals court ruled on Friday. Reversing a lower court ruling, the state Appellate Division in Rochester said defendants including Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram, Google's YouTube, and Reddit were entitled to immunity under a federal law that protects online platforms from liability over user content. The plaintiffs included relatives or representatives of people who died in Peyton Gendron's racially motivated mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets on May 14, 2022, as well as store employees and customers who witnessed it.

Cult mum Lori Daybell called 'coward' as she is given two more life sentences
Lori Vallow Daybell, the doomsday cult follower who killed her two children, has been sentenced to two additional life sentences for plotting to kill her estranged husband and her niece's ex-husband. At her sentencing hearing in Arizona on Friday, Daybell's family members described in court how she victimised them and their disgust. "You are a manipulator, a parasite and a coward," she was told by Kay Woodcock, the grandmother of her murdered son. Daybell had already been sentenced to life in a separate trial for killing her son Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and daughter Tylee Ryan, 16. The latest sentences are for plotting to kill ex-husband Charles Vallow, and ex-nephew Brandon Boudreaux. Her only-surviving son Colby Ryan was among those in court on Friday. He memorialised his father Charles Vallow, who "took care of our family, and he made sure we had a good life". Speaking to her mother, he said it "must be a very sad life to smile your way through all the pain you've caused". "Rather than being able to acknowledge the pain that she has caused, she would rather say that Charles, Tylee and JJ's deaths were a family tragedy and not her evil doing," he said. "Quite frankly, I believe that Lori Vallow herself is the family tragedy." Larry Woodcock, the grandfather of JJ, also lashed out, at times yelling at her. "You murdered Charles, the best thing that's ever happened in your life, for your delusional, narcissistic ways," he said. "I will never speak your name again, murderess. You are nothing." Daybell was found to have conspired with her brother, who died of natural causes in 2019, to murder her ex-husband and cash in on his life insurance. Officials say she also conspired to kill Brandon Boudreaux, who narrowly avoided being shot in the head outside his home. During trial, she argued that her late brother killed her former husband in self-defense. The so-called "Doomsday Mom" represented herself during trial, despite having no legal experience. Chad Daybell, her current husband, is awaiting a death sentence in Idaho for the deaths of the two children, and his wife from the time when his affair began with Lori Daybell. Chad Daybell is an author who has written several apocalyptic novels loosely based on Mormon religious teachings. The murders were committed as part of the couple's bizarre belief that people in their lives had come to be possessed by evil spirits. The sentencing on Friday comes at the end of her third and final trial. The case has gripped the US, after the two children went missing, along with Daybell and her husband. She was later arrested in Hawaii and the children's bodies were found on a property belonging to her husband in Idaho. Hudson corrections officer gets 50 years in death of 2 women, including Randolph girlfriend
A former Hudson County corrections officer was sentenced to 50 years in prison for allegedly killing his girlfriend and her friend in Newark, announced the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. On Feb. 16, 2017, John Menendez, 27, of West New York, picked up his girlfriend Anna Shpilberg, 40, of Randolph and her friend Luiza Shinkarevskaya, 40, of Newark, at Newark Liberty International Airport. Menendez is accused of driving both women to a parking lot near the airport where he shot and killed them, said the HCPO. Authorities said Mendez turned himself in and admitted to shooting both women. The former officer claimed "he was taking large amounts of anabolic steroids, and that made him unable to plan or intend to kill." Police said past text messages between him and Shpilberg revealed "he was angry and jealous about their trip to Mexico without him," according to the press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. On March 4, Menendez pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter. He was sentenced on July 22. He will serve his sentence in New Jersey State Prison.
