Siemens confirms growth outlook after Q2 figures beat forecasts

ZURICH: Siemens still expects to increase its full-year sales by between 3 and 7% 'despite increased uncertainty', the German engineering group said on Thursday, as it reported better-than-expected profit during its second quarter.
The company, whose products include factory software, controllers and trains, said its industrial profit rose 29% to 3.24 billion euros ($3.63 billion) in the three months to the end of March.
The figure, helped by a 315-million-euro gain from the sale of its wiring business to ABB, beat analysts' consensus forecast of 2.75 billion euros.
Sales rose 7% to 19.76 billion euros, ahead of forecasts for 19.22 billion euros, while orders increased 10%.
As a result, Siemens confirmed its outlook for its full-year sales to increase by 3-7% despite seeing 'increased uncertainty in the economic environment'.
'Our customers continue to rely on our technology, and our global footprint demonstrates our resilience,' said Chief Executive Roland Busch in a statement.
In March, Chief Financial Officer Ralf Thomas noted hesitancy among customers due to uncertainties about tariffs, with many delaying investment decisions.
But Siemens, whose results give an indication of the broader industrial economy, said it was seeing an improving situation in most of its businesses.
Although Digital Industries, the company's flagship automation unit, struggled, with a 5% drop in revenue, Siemens said it saw signs of destocking by customers coming to an end.
The weakness was compensated by Smart Infrastructure, which combines hardware and software to manage electricity, heating, cooling, lighting, and data in buildings. It increased sales by 12% while profit jumped 61% helped by the sale of its wire accessories business.
The division is benefiting from sustained demand for electrification, power distribution and the construction of data centres for artificial intelligence.
Mobility also saw revenue and profit rise, buoyed by global investments in rail and transport infrastructure such as electric trains in the United States.

Merz to make first official visit to London on July 17

BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to London on July 17 in his first visit there since taking office in May, Berlin said Friday. Merz will 'be received by Prime Minister Keir Starmer', government spokesman Steffen Meyer told reporters, adding that they would sign a 'friendship treaty' covering foreign and security cooperation. Germany and Britain, both allies of Ukraine, are racing to rearm in the face of a hostile Russia and amid fears that US President Donald Trump is not committed to protecting European NATO partners. The agreement will also cover measures to boost economic growth and encourage 'stronger contacts between citizens' of the two countries, Meyer said. Last October the UK and Germany agreed a 'milestone' defence pact and they have since announced several joint initiatives such as developing strike missiles. Merz's trip will follow this week's state visit to Britain by French President Emmanuel Macron, the first by an EU head of state since the UK left the bloc.

Mercedes-Benz India's first-quarter sales hit record high on strong demand for top-end models, EVs

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz said its first-quarter sales in India hit an all-time high, rising 10% to 4,238 units, on strong demand for its high-end models and electric vehicles (EVs). Demand for luxury models in India, the world's third-largest car market, has steadily risen over the last few years as rapid economic growth brought about a fundamental shift in attitude towards luxury purchases among its younger generation. Luxury car sales account for a little over 1% of India's 4 million units-a-year market. 'Our sharp focus on bolstering the top-end luxury (segment) has been highly successful in influencing customer preferences,' Mercedes-Benz India CEO Santosh Iyer said. Mercedes says no supply chain disruptions after China export concerns Sales of top-end models, like the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach portfolio, rose 20% between April and June, while EV sales jumped than two-fold to form 8% of Mercedes-Benz India's overall sales. Mercedes' core segment, which includes the C- and E-Class sedans and the GLC and GLE sports utility vehicles, grew 10% in the quarter. These cars account for 60% of the company's total sales in India. Mercedes leads sales of luxury vehicles in India, followed by BMW and Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). It produces and assembles a handful of models, including some EVs, from its Chakan factory in the western state of Maharashtra.

European shares close at four-week high on banks boost

FRANKFURT: European shares closed at a four-week high on Wednesday, with banks the biggest boost as investors awaited signs of progress on a trade accord between the United States and the European Union. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.8% to its highest close since June 12. Italy's bank-heavy benchmark jumped 1.6% to its highest since 2007. Lender UniCredit was among the biggest gainers on the index, advancing 4.6% to its highest since 2011. The Italian lender met renewed German opposition to its takeover ambitions for Commerzbank after it doubled its voting stake in the rival. A broader gauge of euro zone banks climbed 2.7% to its highest level since 2010, with French bank Societe Generale also advancing 4%. The index tracking European defence companies gained 1.4% to reach an all-time high. German defence contractor Renk added 5% after a Bloomberg report said the company was considering selling its civilian industrial unit, or part of it. In the latest on the trade front, the EU said it could reach an outline trade agreement with the United States in the coming days. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was probably two days away from sending the EU a letter disclosing the tariff rate on its exports to the US 'Even though a letter could be sent... the hope of the market and the sign of the negotiations is that there is a willingness to find some common ground,' said Georgios Leontaris, chief investment officer for EMEA at HSBC Global Private Banking and Premier Wealth. 'That said, we don't know exactly the terms that will be agreed. Therefore, we need to wait and see how the negotiations will play out in the coming days'. With the deadline for deals extended to August 1, from July 9, investors remain hopeful for more flexibility and negotiations on the table. However, Trump declared there would be 'no more extensions'. Trump also announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on imported copper and said long-threatened levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals would be introduced soon.
