Layoffs are becoming an increasingly salient issue across industries around the world, signaling economic insecurity and changing company priorities. According to a recent news report, Jira software maker Atlassian has reportedly laid off 150 employees. The Australian software company intends to replace some of those jobs with new AI technology.
The layoffs came just a couple of months after Atlassian's billionaire CEO and co-founder, Mike Cannon-Brookes, explained in part why he purchased a private jet.
In March, Cannon-Brookes, co-founder of Atlassian, elaborated about his decision to purchase a $75 million Bombardier 7500 jet on LinkedIn, stating that his purchase was strictly an effort to help him spend more time with his family.
Meanwhile, when the company recently announced the abolition of 150 jobs, fellow co-founder and former CEO Scott Farquhar supported the move.

The Amreli Diamond Association (ADA) in Gujarat organised its first-ever auction of cut and polished natural diamonds, achieving sales of over 4,700 carats of diamonds worth Rs 3 crore in a single day. The auction drew over 300 buyers from Gujarat and Mumbai, with traders and manufacturers selling diamonds on a cash basis. The ADA, according to the people familiar with the development, had been working on the auction for the last two months, contacting diamond traders and merchants of Gujarat and Mumbai, and inviting them to come to Amreli. The auction was held in the Bombay Market of Amreli town in Saurashtra, on Saturday. The association had invited diamond traders from Surat, Bhavnagar, Jasdan, Botad, Junagadh, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. In the day-long auction, which started at 10 am and finished at 8pm, the buyers were given ample time to check the diamonds, said sources. On Monday, the diamond traders and manufacturers of Amreli met ADA President Lalit Thummar and shared the details of the total business done on Saturday. During the meeting, a decision was taken to organise the auction every Saturday. ADA President Lalit Thummar said, 'Over 300 buyers from different parts of Gujarat and Mumbai took part in the auction on Saturday and purchased diamonds worth Rs 3 crore. A good response was recorded. Since diamonds are cheaper in Amreli, traders from other areas visit the district to purchase diamonds. Also, the trade is conducted in cash.' 'In other districts, the diamonds are sold, and payment is done within 90 to 120 days. Here, we have adopted strict rules for cash sales. A polished diamond from the manufacturer reaches the broker, followed by the trader, who sells the diamond to the jeweller or diamond traders of other districts. At every step, the middleman keeps one to two per cent as his commission. If a diamond is sold at Rs 20,000 per carat, the traders will get Rs 16,000 to Rs 15,000,' added Thummar. 'Earlier, the traders had to compromise on prices while doing business,' he said. He further added, 'We are in contact with the diamond merchants of different markets across the state. Next week we are going to organise the auction on Friday as there is a festival on Saturday. We are also planning to construct a building for holding the auctions. The building will also have the facility of accommodation and lockers for the visitors.' According to the ADA, there are over 940 small and medium-level diamond factories in Amreli district, where over 50,000 artisans work as diamond polishers.

NEW DELHI: As unemployment continues to be a concern, government data shows that over 1.6 crore youth across India have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) since 2015, though only about 24.3 lakh secured job placements - less than 15% of the total youth trained. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, skill development minister Jayant Chaudhary said that while placement tracking was done under the first three phases of PMKVY (2015-2022), the current phase (PMKVY 4.0) focuses more on empowering candidates to pursue varied career paths and provides orientation support through platforms like Skill India Digital Hub. The platform connects trained individuals with potential employers and apprenticeship opportunities, with Rozgar Melas and National Apprenticeship Melas providing additional placement support. However, employment outcomes remain modest. Of the 56.89 lakh certified candidates in Short-Term Training (STT) between 2015 and 2022, only 24.3 lakh were reported placed - around 43%. Analysts say the low employment ratio reflects a continued gap between training curricula and industry requirements. The government acknowledged the need to align skilling with local demand and industry trends and has started district-level skill gap studies and state-specific training programmes. Chandigarh: Even as the AAP govt is promoting its new Land Pooling Policy, 2025, farmers of Hoshiarpur village in New Chandigarh for over a decade have been waiting for commercial sites they were promised by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) for the Eco City II (extension) scheme after their land was acquired in 2013. They have only received a letter of intent (LoI), which is not the same as a final plot allotment. Landowners say their plans to rent out showrooms and booths have been stalled since their fertile farmland, their main source of income, was acquired. For those who chose plots over cash compensation by GMADA, the delay has left them in limbo. Satnam Singh, whose five acres were acquired for Eco City II, opted for plots under the land pooling scheme and received an LoI for two commercial sites. "Even though the letter of intent was issued to me, I am yet to get the allotment," he said, adding, "By now, I would have developed the sites and given them on rent." He did, however, receive possession of his residential plots — 2 of 500 square yard, 2 of 300 square yard, and 2 of 200 square yard. "We were given Rs 25,000 per acre for three years and then this compensation too was stopped. However, we have not been compensated for the delay in the case of commercial sites. There is certainly a need for commercial sites in the area as there is not even a milk booth to cater to the locals," he added. "People in my village had the option to opt for cash compensation on a part of the acquired land, which made them comfortable despite the delay," he explained. Manjit Singh, another landowner, said while his family received three residential plots promised for their 12 acres acquired in 2018, the 12-square-yard showroom site they were also promised is still pending. He noted they hoped to receive all the sites within two-three years and advised others to "be very cautious when making choices when their land is acquired". Gurdial Singh's family, which opted for land pooling for their five acres, was promised two to four showroom sites of 121 square yards. The delay in receiving these sites has created a significant financial strain on the family. "It has made things difficult for us financially," he said. In 2013, GMADA acquired approximately 96 acres of land in Hoshiarpur village for the Eco City II (Extension) scheme. As part of the land pooling policy, landowners were given the option of receiving plots in return for their land. GMADA carved out 106 residential plots and 66 commercial plots for this purpose. "This area has not developed as expected despite its proximity to Chandigarh. Many residential sites have no takers. These ambitious projects have not been delivered on it," added Satnam Singh. The villagers also pointed out a contradiction, stating that GMADA is selling plots to the public from land acquired for the schemes, while beneficiaries of the land pooling policy are still waiting for their promised allotments. Meanwhile, the GMADA officials claimed last month that tenders were floated recently to carry out development works. His 10 acres were acquired for the Eco City II (extension) project, but he has yet to receive either the promised residential plots (150 and 200 square yards) or the commercial plots. Citing a lack of development on the Eco City II (extension) site, he noted that landowners only have a letter of intent (LoI) and have repeatedly raised the issue with GMADA. "We have not been allotted residential and commercial plots in Eco City II... even though people have built houses in the project.
