Iraq eyes first LNG imports from US

Iraq is moving closer to launching its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal as it advances negotiations with US-based Excelerate Energy, a senior Iraqi official confirmed on Thursday.
According to OilPrice, the state-run South Gas Company is overseeing the project, which centers on establishing a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the Khor Al-Zubair port in Basra, southern Iraq. The proposed facility would enable the country to receive, store, and convert LNG into natural gas for use in its power sector.
Excelerate Energy, which develops and operates floating LNG terminals and infrastructure, is one of the top bidders for the project, and discussions are reportedly in an advanced phase.

The achievement, recognized by seed distributor Agrico, comes after more than 16 years of persistent hard work and commitment in his fields. "The first year I planted, they recognized this potato as number one in quality," Jalal recounted. "The second year, it was still the first. After more than six years of consistent top performance, they declared, 'Enough, you must be first at the level of all of Iraq!'" Jalal's journey began modestly, cultivating a small plot of land over a decade and a half ago. Today, his operation has expanded to 250 dunams (approximately 625,000 square meters). His consistent success led to repeated evaluations by Agrico representatives. He attributes his success to daily vigilance. "I visit my potato fields every day for watering, applying necessary plant nutrients and pest control, and continuous monitoring,' he said. Meanwhile, Hassan Hilmi, a representative for Agrico - a prominent Dutch seed potato company - confirmed Jalal's status to Rudaw. "We confirm that Mr. Bashir is the first, and we always reference him as a model for our farmers," Hilmi stated. Agrico works with some 300 Iraqi farmers who collectively produce around 600 tons of the Riviera variety annually. Beyond the Riviera, Jalal cultivates six other potato varieties, all of which are also recognized for their exceptional quality. Kamal Arif, head of the Sheikhan Farmers' Union, noted Jalal's unique dedication, telling Rudaw, "We have nearly 600 farmers, but there are only 11 to 12 like Mr. Bashir, yet he stands out from all of them.' The Kurdistan Region's favorable climate and fertile land contribute significantly to its thriving potato industry. Approximately 50,000 dunams of Duhok's agricultural land are dedicated to potato farming, yielding about 600,000 tons annually. This robust sector is not only a source of local produce but also plays a vital role in diversifying the Region's economy. Surplus potatoes are regularly exported to Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, and even as far as South Africa. Nayif Ramazan has contributed to this article.

Iraq, Spain discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation

US-Canada trade talks resume after Ottawa drops tech tax
Shafaq News – Washington Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada resumed on Sunday after Ottawa withdrew its plan to impose a digital services tax on American technology companies, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced. The move follows a statement on Friday by the US President Donald Trump, who had suspended the talks in response to Canada's intention to proceed with the tax. Trump described the measure, which was scheduled to take effect Monday, as a 'direct and blatant attack on our country.' The proposed levy would have imposed a 3% tax on revenue generated by US digital firms—including Amazon, Google, and Meta—from Canadian users, and applied retroactively. According to estimates, US firms would have faced a $2 billion bill by the end of the month. Both leaders reportedly held a phone conversation on Sunday. Carney's office confirmed that they agreed to resume negotiations. In a statement, the Canadian government said that 'in anticipation' of reaching a trade agreement, Canada would rescind the tax plan. 'Today's announcement will support a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis,' Carney said. The resumption of talks comes amid broader tensions in US-Canada relations since Trump's return to office in January. The US president has taken an unpredictable approach to trade, including repeated suggestions that Canada could be integrated as a US state.
