The closest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, is approximately 4.25 light-years away. This distance means light, traveling at about 300,000 km/s, takes 4.25 years to reach us from that star. Proxima Centauri is a small red dwarf star in the Alpha Centauri system, much smaller and cooler than the Sun.
Voyager 1, launched in 1977 and traveling for nearly 50 years, has not yet traveled the distance light covers in one day. While Voyager 1 has journeyed about 167 astronomical units (AU), or roughly 25 billion kilometers, it is still under one light-day from Earth, where a light-day is about 26 billion kilometers[core knowledge].
As of mid-2025, it takes light around 23 hours and 10 minutes to travel between Voyager 1 and Earth, just shy of a full light-day. Voyager 1 is expected to pass the full light-day distance mark only around November 2026, nearly 49 years after its launch[core knowledge].
Light travels roughly 300,000 kilometers per second—making it vastly faster than any human-made spacecraft. This enormous speed difference highlights the vastness of space, where distances are measured in light-years because traveling between stars with current technology is extraordinarily slow[core knowledge].

Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star roughly 12% of the Sun's mass and about 14% of its diameter. Although faint and invisible to the naked eye, it exhibits flare activity that occasionally dramatically increases its brightness. It is part of a triple star system with Alpha Centauri A and B.
From Proxima Centauri's viewpoint, the Sun would appear as a moderately bright star in the constellation Cassiopeia. Its relative proper motion and position in the night sky reflect its dynamic movement through our galaxy, making it the Sun's nearest stellar neighbor for the foreseeable future.

Isro-Nasa satellite Nisar takes flight
The Indian and US space agencies on Wednesday launched a powerful satellite that will keep a close eye on Earth and track even minuscule changes on its surface, arming scientists, researchers and disaster response teams with crucial data to help better forecast natural calamities. Roughly the size of a large SUV, Nisar was injected into orbit at 5.58pm. Over the next few days, the 2,393kg will begin to unfold itself, extending its 30-foot boom and opening the 39-foot diameter (12-meter) reflector, made of gold-plated wire mesh. Science operations should begin by the end of October. For the next five years, the $1.5 billion satellite will map virtually all of Earth's terrain multiple times from its vantage point 743km above Earth. Its two radars — one from the US and the other from India — will operate constantly, scanning the planet in granular detail twice every 12 days. Experts said the satellite can track changes as small as a centimetre. Data from the landmark effort will transform the way scientists study a rapidly evolving planet and climate. The satellite will push out accurate insights on melting glaciers and polar ice sheets; shifting groundwater supplies; motion and stress of land surfaces prompting landslides and earthquakes; and forest and wetland disruptions boosting carbon dioxide and methane emissions. Union minister Jitendra Singh called the joint-launch India's 'scientific handshake with the world'. 'Its capacity to penetrate through fogs, dense clouds, ice layers, etc, makes it a pathbreaking enabler for the aviation and shipping sectors,' he said on X. Isro chief V Narayanan confirmed that the launch was on expected lines and that the satellite was performing within its required parameters. 'All the vehicle system performance is quite normal as expected and predicted. Today we achieved the intended orbit. We have placed it in orbit less than 3km, within the permissible level of 20km,' he said. Casey Swails, deputy associate administrator of Nasa, who attended the launch, said, 'It has been just an incredible decade culminating in this moment from this technical collaboration, the cultural understanding, getting to know each other, building that team across continents, across time zones, missing weekends with families, holidays.' Nisar will be the world's first Earth-observing satellite equipped with two radars to sharpen its data gathering – an S-band and an L-band. The S-band radar, built by Isro, allows accurate readings of small plants, bushes and shrubs. The L-band, built by Nasa, helps sense taller vegetation like trees. Isro and Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) shared the workload, each building their own components, before integrating and testing the spacecraft at the former's Satellite Integration & Testing Establishment in Bengaluru. Data from the L-band instrument will be available at the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) and from the S-Band will be available on Bhoonidhi at the National Remote Sensing Centre in Hyderabad.

This asteroid may hit the Moon in 2032 and Earth could witness a meteor shower
Scientists have been tracking asteroid 2024 YR4 since it popped onto the radar late last year. It is not headed towards the Earth anymore, but there is still a 4% chance it could collide with the Moon in 2032. According to a new study, which is still under peer review, if the asteroid does hit the lunar surface, it could dig out a crater over half a mile wide and blast debris straight into space. And while a space rock slamming into the Moon sounds like sci-fi, scientists are not ruling it out yet. A few inches of rock, a lot of chaos According to Fox News, the asteroid is small by cosmic standards - just 175 to 220 feet across, or roughly the height of a 15-story building. But with enough speed and the right angle, it could do real damage. On March 26, 2025, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope locked onto it, confirming its rocky, jagged surface and surprisingly reflective body. It is the tiniest object Webb has targeted so far. If the asteroid does hit, simulations show it will strike somewhere on the Moon's southern half. The result? A violent spray of lunar rock, with some bits possibly reaching the Earth's orbit. The debris would not wipe out satellites, but small fragments could pepper them for weeks - or months - causing damage, even temporary outages. 'Hundreds to thousands of impacts from mm-sized debris' could be scattered across the satellite fleet, the researchers wrote. What more to expect? If even a sliver of that ejected lunar material hits Earth's atmosphere, we would see it really fast. 'The resulting meteor shower could last a few days and be spectacular,' the study says. Because the debris would be moving slowly by meteor standards, the light show might be a little more subdued than usual but still visible. The real concern, though, is not what we would see - it's what we might lose. NASA's upcoming Lunar Gateway, a space station planned to orbit the Moon, could face serious danger from impact fragments.
