Libyan PM orders investigation into clashes in coastal city

Tripoli, June 7 (UNI) Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Friday ordered an investigation into clashes that broke out Thursday in the northwestern coastal city of Sabratha.
The Information Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement that Dbeibah had instructed the commander of the Western Military Zone "to start an immediate and thorough investigation" into the clashes.
"The instructions are part of orders made yesterday to assign the Western Military Zone commander to urgently interfere on ground and stop the fighting," the statement added.
According to local media, clashes broke out on Thursday between rival armed groups in Sabratha, some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, and lasted until Friday morning. No casualties have been reported so far.
Since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has struggled with insecurity and political instability.

US federal court redirects border agents to stop deportations, overriding President Trump's asylum ban

Washington, Aug 5 (UNI) In an upset to US President Donald Trump's anti-immigration stance, a federal court has redirected American border troops to stop their deportation of migrants, ruling that presidential order could not be used to cut off humanitarian support for potential asylum seekers, two Department of Homeland Security officials told CBS News. Asylum and migration have been one of the cornerstones of the second Trump administration, with border agents allowed full hand to deport illegal migrants without valid permits. The move did indeed manage to curb immigration by a massive degree, particularly from the US-Mexico border, which recorded the lowest level of migration so far. The scale of deportations by the Trump administration has been unprecedented, with border agents not allowing any asylum seekers to enter in a bid to undo the damage caused by the alien 'invasion' under the previous Biden administration, where immigration was noted to be at its highest. On Friday, a federal appeals court lifted its pause on a lower judge's ruling that found Trump's decree to be in violation of US asylum laws. While the appellate court narrowed the lower court's order, saying that the POTUS' proclamation could be used to pause access to the asylum system, it also ruled the US government could not disregard other laws that bar officials from deporting migrants to places where they could be tortured or persecuted. Officials at Customs and Border Protection were instructed this weekend to halt deportations, thus effectively cancelling Trump's proclamation and to process migrants under the US immigration law, which affords foreigners on American soil the right to request humanitarian refuge, the two anonymous DHS officials said. While the court order could potentially reopen Washington's asylum system, it is unlikely to affect the status of those found crossing the southern border illegally. These people will likely remain detained while officials vet their claims. The Trump administration has largely stopped the practice of releasing migrants onto American soil while they await their court dates, limiting releases to cases involving extraordinary circumstances. The Justice Department could also try to get Friday's court order suspended by the Supreme Court, in a bid to revive the POTUS' asylum ban. In a statement to CBS News late Monday, CBP said Friday's court order affirmed "the President's authority to deny asylum to aliens participating in an invasion into the United States." CBP said the Trump administration is "committed to ensuring that aliens illegally entering the United States face consequences for their criminal actions." "This includes prosecution to the fullest extent of the law and rapid removal from the United States," the agency added. "CBP will continue to process illegal/inadmissible aliens consistent with law, including mandatory detention and expedited removal." UNI XC ANV GNK

Gunfire at Sidhu Moosewala Memorial in Dabwali sparks outrage, Lawrence gang claims responsibility

Chandigarh, Aug 5 (UNI) A recent act of vandalism involving gunfire at a memorial statue of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala has triggered a wave of anger and sorrow across fans and family alike. The incident, which occurred late at night in the Dabwali region of Haryana, was reportedly carried out by members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Unidentified assailants opened fire on the statue erected in Moosewala's memory, causing visible damage and leaving bullet shells scattered at the scene. Authorities have since registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Reacting to the attack, Sidhu Moosewala's mother, Charan Kaur, issued a deeply emotional statement on social media, calling the incident a "wound to the soul". 'This is not just an attack on a stone statue,' she wrote in her Instagram post. 'This is an assault on the memory of our son, on the love and respect people had for him.' Charan Kaur expressed deep disappointment over what she described as repeated efforts to erase the legacy of her son. She said that while Moosewala is no longer alive to speak for justice and truth, attempts are still being made to silence his voice and influence. 'My son stood for the rights of the people. Even after his death, efforts are being made to silence his memory. But let me be clear—he cannot be erased. He was a wave, and waves don't die,' she added. In her message, Charan Kaur also warned those responsible that silence from her side should not be mistaken for weakness. 'Our silence is not defeat. Everyone who commits wrong will face justice someday,' she wrote. Soon after the attack, a chilling development followed. Social media posts surfaced, allegedly from Lawrence gang members Goldy Dhillon and Arzoo Bishnoi, claiming responsibility for the act. The posts also contained direct threats to political figures such as Digvijay Chautala and Gagan Kokri, warning them against promoting Moosewala as a martyr. The gang accused these individuals of misleading the public by glorifying Moosewala and threatened 'serious consequences' if such actions continue. Law enforcement agencies are currently verifying the authenticity of the social media posts and assessing the credibility of the threats. Meanwhile, increased security has been deployed at the memorial site and surrounding areas as a precautionary measure. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from Moosewala's fans, civil rights groups, and members of the Punjabi music industry. Many see this not only as an act of criminal intimidation but also as an attack on the cultural and emotional legacy of a beloved artist. Local residents in Dabwali expressed shock and dismay over the attack. 'This is not just about Sidhu Moosewala. It's about the culture and voice he represented,' said one fan. Sidhu Moosewala, known for his powerful lyrics and raw storytelling, was tragically shot dead in May 2022. His death sent shockwaves through the music industry and his fan base worldwide, especially in Punjab and Canada. Since then, Moosewala has come to be seen by many as a symbol of defiance and youth resistance. The local police have launched a detailed probe into the incident. Forensic teams have collected bullet casings and CCTV footage from the area is being examined. Authorities have neither confirmed nor denied the involvement of the Lawrence gang officially, pending further evidence. Senior police officials stated that they are taking the matter seriously and will pursue all leads to bring the perpetrators to justice. 'We are investigating from every possible angle. No one involved in this cowardly act will be spared,' a senior police officer stated. The state government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, though political pressure is mounting to act swiftly against organized criminal networks operating across the Punjab-Haryana belt. Russia ups military ante, drops all restrictions on ground based short range missiles

Moscow, Aug 5 (UNI) As the Russia-Ukraine war progresses with no seeming end in sight, Russia has upped its military ante and dropped all restrictions on the deployment of ground-based intermediate-short-range missiles (INF), said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. "Russia no longer has any constraints in this regard. Russia does not consider itself limited by anything anymore. Russia considers itself entitled to take relevant measures and steps, if necessary," Peskov told the press, reports state media TASS. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow no longer considers itself bound by self-restrictions on deploying intermediate-and shorter-range missiles as the conditions for observing the moratorium have disappeared. Stating that the West's actions regarding Ukraine have made any room for adhering to the INF next to impossible, Peskov added that these actions now constitute a 'direct threat' to Russia's national security. As such, Russia is no longer obliged to adhere to the treaty, he noted. The Russian statement further added: 'Decisions on specific parameters of response measures will be made by Russia's leadership based on an interagency analysis of the scale of the deployment of American and other Western ground-based intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles, as well as the overall development of the situation in the field of international security and strategic stability.'
