The Death of a Mother and Child in Rome Stumped Police, So They Called a TV Show
Investigators were stumped. There were no identifying documents, and the woman's body was so decomposed it would have been difficult for anyone to identify her visually. The gruesome case immediately brought sensationalist front-page headlines — 'Rome, horror in the park, woman and child dead' read one in Rome's daily La Repubblica. Il Corriere della Sera, in Milan, called it 'a whodunit in a park in Rome.'
The country was hooked; the police under pressure.
With few leads, and a media frenzy underway, investigators took an unusual step. A spokeswoman appeared on a popular television show called 'Chi l'ha Visto?' — or 'Who Has Seen Him?' — to ask for the public's help.
And viewers of the show, which looks for missing people, did what they had done for 37 seasons: They searched their memories for clues.
All the police had to go on was that the woman had four visible tattoos and that a preliminary autopsy had revealed the child was her daughter. People who frequented the park recalled seeing a young woman and child that may have fit that description in the company of a man.
What unfolded, over several weekly shows, was a sad tale of a young Russian woman's shattered dream of creating a life for herself abroad. With each revelation, the cachet of 'Chi l'ha Visto?' increased, as did questions about the police's lack of intervention when concerned passers-by had called them about the couple and the child.

KKR Faces EU Probe Into Information Provided in $26 Billion NetCo Acquisition
The European Union opened an investigation into whether KKR KKR 1.62%increase; green up pointing triangle supplied the block's merger regulator with false or misleading information before the investment firm's multibillion-dollar purchase of Telecom Italia TIT 0.72%increase; green up pointing triangle unit NetCo was unconditionally cleared by officials last year. The European Commission approved the companies' deal in May 2024, initially ruling that KKR's bid to snap up Telecom Italia's broadband network assets for up to 22 billion euros ($25.90 billion) wouldn't affect competition in Europe. The watchdog had said the merged company wouldn't be able to deteriorate the conditions for rivals' access to services due to long-term agreements that FiberCop—a joint venture between Telecom Italia and KKR—held with several companies.

Police officer shot in the face while investigating a killing in suburban New York
NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer was shot in the face while attempting to search a home as part of an investigation into a recent killing in suburban New York, authorities said Thursday. They said the officer was expected to recover, and the suspect ultimately surrendered. The chain of events began Wednesday afternoon, when the body of a 66-year-old man was found in the woods in North Bay Shore, on Long Island. An investigation, including security camera footage, led investigators to want to question a former co-worker of the deceased, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said at a news conference. He said the two apparently were mechanics and had had conflicts in the past. Police obtained a search warrant and went to the 48-year-old man's home, where he fired on officers through an open door, the commissioner said. He said one officer, a 33-year-old former Navy medic with two years on the force, was shot in the face. The impact fractured one of his cheekbones and the bullet lodged near an ear, coming a half-inch (1 cm) from one of his eyes, said surgeon Dr. James Vosswinkel of Stony Brook University Medical Center. He said the officer was spared nerve damage and was on course for a full recovery. The officer underwent surgery to remove the bullet and was recuperating later Thursday morning. 'He's in a lot of pain,' the police commissioner said, but 'he's happy to be alive.' He said no officers fired. Instead, they surrounded the home and summoned hostage negotiators. The suspect surrendered around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the commissioner. Police haven't yet released the officer's or suspect's name. Charges against the suspect are expected but haven't been announced.
