Senate slams 'honour killing' in Balochistan, urges swift justice
Listen to article The Senate on Thursday passed a resolution condemning the brutal murder of a man and a woman in Balochistan, carried out on the orders of a tribal jirga. The resolution was adopted with overwhelming support, with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) being the only party that declined to endorse it. Tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman, it described the killings as a gross violation of human rights, the Constitution, and the laws of Pakistan, Radio Pakistan reported. According to the resolution text, the House 'strongly and unequivocally condemns the heinous incident wherein a woman and man were publicly and illegally executed in broad daylight, following a so-called jirga decision.' It termed the murders a premeditated act of vigilante violence and rejected any attempt to justify the act under the guise of tribal customs or so-called honour. Calling the killings 'barbaric,' the resolution stated that they must not be masked by cultural or traditional pretexts. 'It is in fact a crime that has gravely dishonoured the nation. Any attempt to justify such a crime based on 'custom or honour' is completely unacceptable, as is the entire process of victim-blame,' it noted. Affirming that honour killings constitute murder under the law, the resolution stressed that they must be treated and prosecuted accordingly. It warned that the rule of law cannot be selectively applied, nor should tribal or informal justice mechanisms be allowed to undermine constitutional protections and due process. Also Read: ATC grants 10-day remand of key suspect in Quetta 'honour killing' case The resolution urged the government to ensure an immediate and transparent investigation into the killings. It called for all those involved—whether directly or indirectly, including individuals who convened or sanctioned the jirga—to be brought to justice without delay. It also asked that law enforcement agencies be directed to handle such cases strictly under the relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, without compromise or discretion. Grateful to all the parties across the opposition/ treasury benches in the Senate of Pakistan for generously supporting a House Resolution against the heinous practice of murdering women in the name of "honour". Thank you @BBhuttoZardari for always supporting women's rights ! We… — SenatorSherryRehman (@sherryrehman) July 24, 2025 Furthermore, it recommended that the Ministries of Law and Justice and Human Rights conduct a thorough review of enforcement gaps in existing laws dealing with so-called honour crimes and propose actionable reforms for robust implementation. It emphasised the need to train and sensitise public prosecutors and investigating officers to treat honour crimes and gender-based violence as serious criminal offences warranting proactive prosecution. The resolution also called on provincial and federal governments to launch awareness campaigns rejecting the concept of honour-based violence and reinforcing the supremacy of constitutional law over tribal or feudal traditions. In a post on X, she wrote: 'Grateful to all the parties across the opposition/treasury benches in the Senate of Pakistan for generously supporting a House Resolution against the heinous practice of murdering women in the name of 'honour'.' The killings, which occurred last month, gained widespread attention after a video surfaced showing the couple being shot. The man who killed the woman was her brother, acting on behalf of the family and tribe, provincial police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari told Reuters. The chief of the tribe, Sher Baz Satakzai, had ordered the killing, he added. Satakzai was among those arrested, according to Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who addressed the media in a news conference in Quetta, the provincial capital. "We will make sure that they all will be prosecuted," Bugti said. In response, law enforcement officials arrested the chief. He is currently in police custody on a 10-day physical remand.

UBG Chief urges SBP to cut interest rate to 6pc
Listen to article S M Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief of the United Business Group (UBG), has called on the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to reduce the policy interest rate to 6 per cent, citing low inflation and the need to spur economic growth. In a statement issued on Thursday, Tanveer said the prevailing interest rate of 11pc is disproportionately high, especially given that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stands at 0.3pc while average inflation is currently hovering around 4pc. He noted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommends maintaining interest rates slightly above the inflation rate to keep them positive in real terms. "At 11pc, Pakistan's interest rate is far above the inflation rate, stifling industrial growth and increasing the cost of doing business," he said. Read More: Profit-taking pulls PSX down after strong opening With the monetary policy announcement due on July 30, Tanveer urged the central bank to consider a significant rate cut. He argued that such a move would reduce the government's interest payments, stimulate investment, and make Pakistani exports more competitive. He pointed out that the government has allocated Rs8.5 trillion for interest payments in the current budget. A cut in the interest rate to 6pc, he claimed, could save nearly Rs3.5 trillion. Highlighting the challenges faced by the business community, Tanveer also criticised certain fiscal measures in the recent budget. In particular, he expressed concern over Sections 37A and 37B of the Income Tax Ordinance, which grant tax authorities the power to arrest and detain. He urged the government to focus on creating a business-friendly environment, noting that high borrowing costs, coupled with soaring energy prices, are already weighing heavily on industry. Also Read: PM Shehbaz hails World Bank position on IWT Meanwhile, the SBP has maintained its policy rate at 11pc in recent months, citing inflationary pressures and vulnerabilities in the external sector. However, with inflation expected to stabilise around the long-term average of 7pc in the coming quarters, analysts believe there may be room for a cautious easing of monetary policy. The external account outlook has improved, buoyed by strong inflows of workers' remittances, and foreign exchange reserves are projected to rise beyond $13 billion by June 2025 — developments that may provide the SBP with greater policy flexibility.

Profit-taking pulls PSX down after strong opening
Listen to article The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) once again succumbed to profit-taking on Thursday as the benchmark KSE-100 index lost early gains to close down by over 550 points amid caution over futures rollover. The index surged to intra-day high of 139,868 shortly after the opening bell, reflecting investor interest across key sectors. However, the momentum proved short-lived as selling pressure emerged, pulling the index down by midday. Later, the index hit intra-day low at 138,614. Market participants pointed to profit-booking in heavyweight stocks ahead of corporate earnings announcements. At the end of trading, the KSE-100 index settled at 138,692.67, registering a notable loss of 561.69 points, or 0.40%. Market Snapshot – July 24, 2025 Unlock today's market moves and stay one step ahead! — PSX (@pakstockexgltd) July 24, 2025 KTrade Securities observed in its market wrap that stocks experienced a negative session as investors again locked in profits near recent highs. Selling pressure emerged later in the day amid caution over futures rollover and the earnings season, both of which are expected to drive increased volatility and keep sentiment in check. Among key laggards of the day were bank, fertiliser and energy stocks, it said. Topline Securities commented that after a strong rally in recent sessions, the local bourse took a step back on Thursday as investors opted to lock in gains ahead of final days of the rollover week. The KSE-100 index witnessed a volatile session, swinging between intra-day high of 613 points and low of 561 points, before closing at 138,693, down 562 points, it said. The session was marked by a tug-of-war between bullish sentiment and rollover-induced caution, with market participants leaning towards profit-booking. Amid mounting rollover pressure, Topline projected, choppy movements are likely to persist and selective interest is expected to dictate near-term direction. Fauji Fertiliser, Habib Bank, Engro Holdings, Mari Petroleum and Engro Fertilisers wiped out 506 points from the index. On the flip side, Hub Power, MCB Bank and Systems Limited lent some support, collectively adding 204 points, it added.
