Chain law enforcement along I-70 ensures commercial vehicles travel safely in Colorado mountains
As of Aug. 7, 2024, Senate Bill 24-100 says commercial law vehicles must carry chains from Sept. 1 to May 31. Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol say straight trucks, single-drive axle combinations, tandem-drive axle combinations, and auto transporters are required to chain four-drive tires. Buses and hot shot trucking are required to chain two-drive tires.
Troopers say without the chains on their vehicles, many drivers could find their tires sliding and lose control. This could cause major backups and in worst-case scenarios, crashes resulting in injury or death.
Troopers say they will focus heavily on I-70, west of Morrison to the Utah border. Other areas include:
Colorado Highway 9, MP 63 to MP 97 (Frisco to Fairplay)
Route 40 west of MP 256 (Empire)
US Route 50 west of MP 225 (Salida)
US Route 160 west of MP 304 (Walsenberg)
US Route 285 west of MP 250 (Morrison)
US Route 550 from MP 0 to 130
If a driver is caught without a chain, they will receive a fine. These include;
$50+ for not carrying
$500+ for not chaining up
$1,000+ for blocking as a result of not chaining up
Troopers say at the end of the day, it is about safety.
"As you know, I-70 around the mountain corridor can show really bad conditions including icy and snowy," Colorado State Trooper Sherri Mendez. "It does make a difference with the drivers' actions as well. This helps with keeping the roadway safe."
Troopers say to expect this enforcement to last until May 31, 2025. Travel will be restricted if the vehicle is unable to be chained.

Fatal crash causes Colorado Department of Transportation to close I-70 east through Loveland Pass
The Colorado Department of Transportation is working on setting up detours after a fatal crash on I-70 on Friday night. Authorities said a motorcyclist was killed when they crashed into a guard rail just before 9 p.m. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Crashes involving commercial vehicles become big concern in Colorado, more than 1,200 in six months
Colorado State Patrol says crashes involving commercial trucks are becoming a big concern. According to their data, between Jan. 1, 2024, and June 30, 2024, there have been 1,270 crashes involving commercial vehicles. In 2025, during the same time period, there were 1,188 crashes involving commercial vehicles. CSP says both the driver and the CMV operators are to blame for this dangerous trend. This comes from a combination of distracted driving, speeding and crossing lanes too fast. A majority of these crashes are reported along I-70. This highway has been ranked the worst highway in the state for these crashes. CSP says if you are traveling through the high country, the weather is often to blame. If you are traveling within city limits, it's a mix of flat and hilly land. Let's break down these statistics even further. CSP says 60% of non-fatal crashes are usually the commercial operator's fault. It's important to remember to always get adequate sleep and never drive more than 11 hours without at least ten hours off. CSP says 66% of fatal crashes involve a regular driver being at fault. One quarter of that 66% is caused by impairment. CSP says drivers need to stop cutting off commercial vehicles and driving in their blind spots. Regardless of the driver, CSP stressed that leaving space between vehicles can prevent all of these crashes. "If the car speeds up to cut in front of a truck, it doesn't give enough distance if traffic decides to suddenly stop," said Captain John Hahn, Commander for Motor Carrier Unit at Colorado State Patrol. "It does not provide enough time or distance to be able to stop before it collides into the back of the vehicle." So far in 2025, authorities say there has been a 6.5% drop in commercial crashes. CSP says the number should be zero since these crashes are always preventable.

Vehicle accident involving an ambulance in Clifton; I-70B temporarily closes
CLIFTON, Colo. (KREX) — At around noon on Saturday, the Colorado State Patrol, Mesa County Sheriff's Office, Grand Junction Fire Department and other dispatched emergency resources responded to a vehicle accident involving a car and an ambulance at the intersection of I-70B and 32 Road in Clifton. The ambulance was reportedly transporting a patient to a hospital at the time of the accident, who was later transferred to a different ambulance. No injuries caused by the accident have been reported. The Westbound lanes of I-70B were temporarily closed as emergency personnel responded to the scene. MCSO assisted with traffic control until the lanes were safe to reopen. No additional information about the incident is currently available and it remains under investigation by CSP.
