Kinross hosting ‘king of noir'

Delaney Davidson. PHOTO: SABIN HOLLOWAY Fifteen years after releasing his first album, celebrated Kiwi songwriter Delaney Davidson's preparing to perform a rocking collection of bangers at Gibbston's Kinross this Saturday night. Lyttelton-based Davidson, a finalist for 2025's prestigious Taite Music Prize with his latest solo album Out of My Head, has spent the past 20 years as an international travelling troubadour. He's also written and recorded with big names including Neil Finn, Marlon Williams, Al Park, Barry Saunders, Tami Neilson, Bruce Russell, The Eastern and Troy Kingi and has collaborated with Tame Iti on visual work. For Out of My Head, co-produced by Mark 'Merk' Perkins, he's co-written with Williams, Hayley Westenra, Sam Scott and Miranda Eastern — Williams and Reb Fountain feature on two songs. Davidson initially joined Reverend Beat Man, founder of Swiss record label Voodoo Rhythm Records, to release his debut album, Self Decapitation, in 2010 — it included Little Heart, a Silver Scroll finalist in 2011, and barnstormer Dirty Dozen. In 2011 he released Bad Luck Man, which featured You're a Loser, named APRA New Zealand Country Music Song of the Year in2012. He scooped the same award, with Williams, in 2013 for Bloodletter, and won it again in 2014, with Neilson, for Whiskey & Kisses. He and Neilson teamed up again to win it in 2023 for Beyond the Stars. He's also won the NZ Country Album Music of the Year, the One Man Band competition in Zurich and was Artist Laureate of New Zealand 2015. Davidson, who's also a multi-instrumentalist, producer and filmmaker, has been described as the "reigning king of capturing the essence of 'noir' in country and folk music". With multiple album anniversaries this year, he's formed the aptly named The Anniversaries, featuring Alex Freer, Heather Webb and Mark Hughes, for a New Zealand tour, which is opening up his 14-album songbook to share "a rocking collection of bangers". As for what the audience can expect at Kinross? "A night of dark-hearted ballads, wry humour and the unmistakable energy that made him a cult figure across Europe and beyond." Limited tickets for 'Delaney Davidson Anniversary Tour 2025' are still available, priced at $59.81 plus fees, via — the R18 event starts at 6.30pm.

OUT NOW: Soft Bait 'Life Advice' Plus Video For Album Track 'Sooner'

Today, Tāmaki Makaurau four-piece Soft Bait release their sophomore album, Life Advice, out now via Flying Nun Records. In support, the band have also announced a release tour of Aotearoa - with shows in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi and Ōtepoti. Soft Bait have been producing off-centre post-punk since their formation in 2020, only sharpening their output since the release of Plot Points - their debut LP released in 2022. Barrelling forward with restless momentum, new album Life Advice is sharp, hook-heavy rock - locomotive bass-lines and live-wire energy fused with musings of online weirdness, distinct Kiwi-isms, and wider reflections on the quiet rituals we fall into, or inherit, without releasing. Life Advice is available worldwide digitally and on vinyl, Standard Silver or on Limited Edition Flying Nun Black. Along with the release and announcement of a nationwide tour, Soft Bait also share a new music video for album focus-track and uneasy-anthem ' Sooner ' where they trade speed for sway; steady, and suspicious. ' Bring in the good news' sings front-man Joshua Hunter - a final manifestation in the face of collective unrest and collapse Life Advice lands like well-meaning wisdom from a mate you definitely shouldn't be taking advice from - half true, half twisted, but still ringing in your ears the next day. The first single, ' New Leaf ' dropped on May 22, followed by ' Long Line ' on July 3rd - both picking up momentum locally and worldwide, with streaming numbers reaching a new height for the band and play on BBC Radio 6. For fans of Viagra Boys, Squid, Warmduscher, and Yard Act, Soft Bait deliver a raw, unfiltered take on the post-punk genre, grounded in Kiwi culture and the peculiarities of everyday life. Soft Bait are Joshua Hunter, Patrick Hickley, Keria Paterson and Cameron Mackintosh. Their debut album, ' Plot Points' (2022), introduced a sound that blends gothic post-punk with personal, powerful vocals. The album's singles, Big' and ' True Stories ', topped SRN radio charts, and their live shows have been described as "exhilarating, raucous, lively, punky, and so much fun." Now part of the Flying Nun Records family, Soft Bait have now released their sophomore album, 'Life Advice'. A sharp, hook-heavy record with chugging bass lines, restless energy, and tightly wound turns. The songs dig into online weirdness, Kiwi archetypes, and the quiet rituals we fall into without realising. Lyrically, it's full of lines that land like overheard wisdom from a mate you probably shouldn't be taking advice from — half true, half twisted, and still ringing in your ears the next day.

Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Faith Ward corrects confusion about Australian nationality

'We went home like two years ago and I was like, 'Oh, it hasn't changed one bit.'' Ward, who moved to Perth aged 10, is the first New Zealander (and the third Australian) to be selected for the illustrious Texas-based cheerleading squad. She said the significance of her selection was not lost on her. Ward is one of six rookies joining the coveted dance squad for the 2025-26 NFL season. Photo / Instagram 'I feel like it's so cool for us Kiwi girls to show that we are just as capable as everyone else to make our dreams come true. 'Obviously, we don't really get a lot of opportunity in New Zealand, so we have to put ourselves out there as it is, and I did just that and proved us right and that we are capable of doing something like this and made my dream happen.' Her New Zealand nationality may even have helped her secure a spot in the high-profile team. Ward told the radio show she was shoulder-tapped by the team's recruiters, who asked where she was originally from. When she said New Zealand, the recruiter replied: 'We've never had a New Zealand DCC, so you should apply.' Ward also represents a tonsorial first on the squad, breaking the mould by wearing her hair tied up instead of down in the team's signature style. 'I'm honestly so honoured to not only be the first New Zealand DCC and the third Australian, I'm like one of the first to have a ponytail,' she told Fletch, Vaughan & Hayley. 'You guys will see in my cameo if my hair is up or down, that'll be the answer as to whether or not it's staying. But for now, I've been wearing my hair in a pony and [dance director] Kelli seems to like it.' Ward is one of six rookies joining the coveted dance squad for the 2025-26 NFL season. A Netflix docuseries follows the cheerleaders from auditions to training camp and into the NFL season. Asked whether she was prepared for the fame that comes with the role, Ward said her life was 'on a full 360'. 'I'm going to try and live in the moment and take it all in for what it is.' She knows that, when she makes her debut, she'll be inspiring and representing more than just an NFL team. 'Hopefully, I'll do NZ proud.'
