Indian film board criticised for cutting ‘overly sensual' Superman kisses

The Guardian9 hours ago
As Indian cinemagoers watched the latest Superman film, many noticed something was amiss. On two occasions as the superhero leaned in for a kiss with Lois Lane, the film suddenly jumped forward, cutting to the aftermath of an embrace.
India's censor board had deemed the kissing scenes, including a 33-second smooch, to be 'overly sensual' for Indian audiences and demanded they be cut from the film before its cinematic release.
The cuts have prompted an outcry from some viewers, who accused the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) of making arbitrary, overly moralistic demands and having double standards by allowing heavy violence and misogyny to be depicted in Indian films but cutting a kissing scene from a Hollywood film.
'CBFC would allow horrific scenes of violence and sexual assault in a U-certified film that kids are freely allowed to watch, but won't allow consensual kissing in a U/A comic book movie that kids should watch under adult supervision,' one viewer said on social media.
Another said: 'So, Superman is NOT allowed to kiss Lois Lane on Indian screens. But all sleazy leading men of Indian films are allowed to pull, grope, assault, stalk, slap, and do whatever they want with their heroines. Are you serious, Indian censor board?'
Another fan criticised the jarring interruption caused by the crude cuts. 'The Indian censor board has embarrassed itself with the abrupt cuts they've made to the film. The 'morality' of censorship aside, the way they've managed to mangle the flow is atrocious,' they said.
Indian cinema has long had an uncomfortable relationship with on-screen kissing. With the exception of a four-minute kissing scene in the 1933 film Karma, up until the 1990s on-screen caressing was largely kept to hugs or symbolised through imagery such as flowers.
While attitudes have relaxed in recent years, the country remains largely conservative and widely religious, particularly outside of urban areas, and more intimate kissing scenes are still subject to the censor's knife.
The censor board has also faced accusations of being overly political. The Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice was blocked from cinematic release last year after its director, Ali Abbasi, refused to make cuts demanded by the CBFC. 'I ran away from Iranian censorship only to meet corporate censorship of the US. Now India. Really?' Abbasi said. 'Censorship seems to be an epidemic at the moment.'
Similarly, earlier this year censors in effect banned the release of Santosh, an internationally acclaimed film addressing police violence and misogyny in India, after demanding a list of cuts. Sandhya Suri, the film's director, called the cut requests 'disappointing and heartbreaking'.

EXCLUSIVE Hollywood star who played Kevin Costner's daughter flashes armpit hair during LA outing... can you guess who?

She's an actress who once played Kevin Costner 's daughter. And on Monday, the 42-year-old star was pictured stepping out in Los Angeles, distinctly showing her armpit hair. The mom-of-two — who, like fellow actor Tom Cruise, belongs to the Church of Scientology — ran errands in a casual look, sporting a sleeveless black top and ripped blue jeans. The Seattle native — who is married to a cyclist — completed the look with white sneakers and a white crossbody bag. She also sported a necklace and gold earrings, and wore her hair styled in a half-updo. Can you guess who she is? That's right! It's Erika Christensen. She's built a career with roles in films like Traffic (2000), Swimfan (2002), The Banger Sisters (2002), The Perfect Score (2004), Flightplan (2005) and more. In Steven Soderbergh's 2000 crime drama Traffic she famously portrayed cocaine user Caroline Wakefield. She won the MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Female Performance for the role. In 2005, Christensen co-starred in The Upside of Anger as Andy Wolfmeyer, alongside Costner and Joan Allen. She then took on a starring role in the short-lived ABC drama series, Six Degrees, in 2006. From 2010 to 2015, Christensen starred as Julia Braverman-Graham in NBC's family drama series Parenthood. Since 2023, she's been starring as Angie Polaski in ABC's Will Trent. She had guest star roles in television series including Frasier, The Practice, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Touched by an Angel. The star also made a guest appearance on the Fox sitcom That '70s Show, which reunited her with her Traffic co-star Topher Grace. Christensen's family moved from Seattle to suburban Los Angeles when she was four. Her parents, who became Scientologists in their twenties, raised her within the Church of Scientology. The Seattle native ran errands in a casual look, sporting a sleeveless black top and ripped blue jeans She also sported a necklace and gold earrings, and wore her hair styled in a half-updo Erika opened up about her association with Scientology on an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast in 2018. 'I can justify things in all kinds of different ways, but basically, like, as a Scientologist. And I definitely cannot speak for every Scientologist about anything because everybody has their own beliefs and comes at it from even other religions and all kinds of stuff,' she shared. 'However, I don't believe this is the first time I have lived on this planet and I basically think I've probably done absolutely everything before,' she added. When asked about the criticism the church has faced throughout the years, she said: 'I don't think that it comes from an actual place of, like, your critiques. I don't think it comes from critical thinking.' Christensen got engaged to cyclist Cole Maness in November 2014. They married on September 5, 2015, in Palm Springs, California. The couple lives in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, and has two daughters, Shane and Polly.

Davina McCall, 57, insists she's 'not scared of dying anymore' in powerful confession following life-changing brain tumour

has insisted she's 'not scared of dying anymore' following her life-changing brain tumour. The TV presenter, 57, who is now in the all clear, admitted the life-changing tumour has given her a new lease of life as she no longer fears dying. Davina was diagnosed with a colloid cyst, a rare type of benign brain tumour in November and underwent a six-hour operation. Her brain tumour forced Davina to have difficult conversations with her family in case she never woke up from the operation. Speaking at Fearne Cotton 's Happy Place Festival at Gunnersby Park over the weekend, Davina explained how it has shifted her perspective on life. 'I am not afraid of dying anymore and it was the biggest journey of my life from August 2023 to November 2024', she admitted. The TV presenter, who is now in the all clear , admitted the life-changing tumour has given her a new lease of life as she no longer fears dying (pictured in March) 'I want to help people on their deathbed on my Begin Again podcast now so they can say "I have lived the life I wanted and not think things like "I wish I had not done that job. I wished I had not stayed in this relationship". 'Sometimes I feel like there are other powers at play. All the fear that comes around the word "tumour". Fearne and I understood each other at that time. 'I mean, it's a really amazing place to get to, not being scared of dying. I think having no regrets and feeling like you are living fully in the life you want to be in, it's quite rare.' Last month, discussing her recent health battle, Davina explained to Women's Health: 'When I got this brain tumour I said to [my partner] Michael, "If I make it, this will be the greatest thing that's ever happened to me."' Continuing her positive outlook following the devastating ordeal, Davina insisted she would 'not change anything'. She continued: 'Without sounding arrogant I now love myself. I have been on a massive life journey and I have been through terrible struggles. 'That is where the learning comes from. If something rally hard happens now I know it is a good thing. 'The learning that I have made in the past two years has been so immense and enriching. I would not change it for the world. 'Obviously when it happened it was like calamity but to not be afraid of disasters that will make you a better person.' Davina appeared in a video with her partner Michael Douglas, where she confirmed she had received the all clear after undergoing an MRI scan. The TV personality also shared unseen before and after snaps from her scan revealing that the tumour has completely disappeared from her brain. Accompanying the video, Davina wrote: 'So here it is. Our final brain surgery update. Had the final MRI this week. @ got everything out during surgery, it's not coming back. 'Thanks so so much to everyone at @onewelbeck and @clevelandclinic . To my mum and @mdlondon for taking such good care of me . To Sarah for being my BFF to my amazing kids. To @ for being the GOAT. 'I am so so grateful particularly because I know a lot of people have inoperable tumours and and I know I'm lucky to be able to draw a line under this and move on with my life when so many people can't. And I'm just gonna say this one more time. Benign does not mean fine.' She told how she had her final MRI and admitted that she was nervous' as if any of the tumour was left that it would grow back and she'd have to 'go through the whole thing again'. She noted that she'd 'mentally prepared herself' for that scenario, while Michael added that he too was nervous as it had been 'a huge journey'. Laughing with joy and relief, Davina then added: 'but it was clear!'

World's oldest marathon runner – 114yo Brit Fauja Singh – ‘hit by a car & killed while trying to cross the road'

A BRITISH marathon legend has died after he was reportedly hit by a car in India. Fauja Singh passed away at the age of 114 after he spent years making history - including becoming the world's oldest marathon runner at the age of 101. 7 7 The beloved athlete is still believed to be the oldest runner to ever complete a full marathon. He tragically lost his life after he was smashed into by a car as he crossed the road in his home village of Beas Pind in Punjab on Monday, according to reports in India. Singh - who had lived in Ilford since 1992 - broke onto the global running scene after he started to compete in marathons at the age of 89. He continued to run up until he was 101 years old competitively. During those remarkable years he received a personal letter from Queen Elizabeth II, was honoured by the Guinness World Records and became a torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics. His London-based running club and worldwide charity, Sikhs In The City, confirmed his death today. Touching tributes were led by Harmander Singh, Singh's coach at the running club. He announced: "Dearest runners. It is with great sadness that we can confirm our icon of humanity and powerhouse of positivity Fauja Singh has passed away in India. Aged 114 years old. "He succumbed to injuries caused by a vehicle accident while crossing the road close to his home. "In lieu of flowers please donate to his Clubhouse Appeal so we can carry on his legacy to encourage the world to keep fit and stay positive." TikTok star Aldo Miranda, 32, found dead at home as heartbreaking final post revealed The running club have planned several upcoming events in London to celebrate his life and achievements. Singh's legacy is made even more impressive due to him suffering from thin and weak legs which meant he was unable to walk until he was five years old. After moving to London in the 90s he only took up running in 2000 after the death of his wife. Aged 90, he ran the London Marathon in six hours and 54 minutes - beating the previous record for anyone over 90 by almost an hour. Singh went on to compete in numerous marathons with his best ever finish being at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon. It took him just five hours and 40 minutes. When he hit 100, Singh showed no signs of slowing down as he attempted to become the first centenarian to run a marathon in 2011. After finishing the race, Guinness World Records described it as an "inspirational achievement". 7 7 7 They were unfortunately unable to register it as an official record due to complications with Singh's birth certificate. He didn't own the proper documents due to his upbringing in India during the early 1900s despite the date of birth on his passport being April 1 1911. After running a few more events, he eventually retired from racing at the age of 101. Other tributes have flooded in since his passing was confirmed. MP Preet Kaur Gill said on X: "Saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh. "I had the honour of meeting him. A truly inspiring man. His discipline, simple living, and deep humility left a lasting mark on me. "A reminder that age is just a number, but attitude is everything. Rest in power, legend." Fellow MP Jas Athwal MP added: "Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji. "He was legendary - a man who continued running until he was 101. He was a global Sikh icon, that inspired millions across the world. "His spirit and legacy of resilience will run on forever. My heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends. We will miss him. RIP." 7
