Oakland women arrested following Healdsburg robbery, pistol-whipping, kidnapping

A manual transmission foiled two would-be carjackers who allegedly kidnapped a man because they couldn't drive his SUV away from a Healdsburg park over the weekend, authorities said. The suspects, two Oakland women, first allegedly robbed and assaulted the man's wife at Gibbs Park on Sunday before forcing the husband to drive them away from the scene, police said Monday. The victim and her husband had gone to Gibbs Park to use the restroom, and while returning to their car, they saw a woman needing help, according to Healdsburg police. When they tried to help her, however, she allegedly pulled out a handgun, demanded their personal belongings and vehicle, and then hit the wife in the head with the gun, police said. When the suspect and an accomplice discovered they couldn't drive a vehicle with a clutch, they allegedly forced the husband at gunpoint and knifepoint into the SUV to drive them away. Officers responded to the park and found the wife bleeding, and she was transported to a hospital for treatment. After that, a countywide alert was issued for the victims' car, and a short time later, Petaluma police spotted it headed south on U.S. Highway 101. They pursued it with help from Marin County, San Rafael, and Sonoma County law enforcement agencies. The husband was still driving the vehicle, and he ended the pursuit by driving off the road, police said. After a short foot chase, both suspects were taken into custody. The husband wasn't injured and was reunited with his wife. A child who was with the suspects was found and was uninjured. Davina Humphrey, 51, and Amina Vaden, 24, were both arrested on suspicion of crimes that include kidnapping, kidnapping during the commission of carjacking, robbery, child abuse, and assault with a firearm. They were being held at Sonoma County Jail, with bail set at $1.02 million.

2 killed following house party in Harvey, Illinois, Identified

Two people who were shot and killed, including a suspect, following a house party in Harvey, Illinois, over the weekend have been identified. On Saturday, around 8:03 p.m., Harvey police officers responded to a mass shooting at a house party in the 14400 block of Des Plaines Street. Two shooters arrived at the scene and opened fire at the gathering. Five people were hit by the gunfire, including a 4-year-old boy, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The other four victims were taken to the hospital in unknown conditions. Police said their conditions were stabilized. During the incident, a concealed carry license holder returned fire and killed one of the suspects. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified him as 24-year-old Charles Lipsey. The second suspect was injured and taken to the hospital, and later placed in police custody. Later, around 4:40 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 200 block of Calumet Boulevard. A man was found inside a minivan who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiners identified him as 28-year-old Jeremiah R. Adutu-Bofah. Chief Cameron Biddings said a second person was inside the van but was not wounded. He believed that the shooting was retaliatory following the shooting at the house party and stems from an ongoing conflict between two groups known to police. "These are not random acts of violence or anonymous individuals. This violence stems from an ongoing conflict between individuals with a long and disruptive history within our city," Biddings said." We are very familiar with them, and frankly, they've caused harm in our community for far too long." He said the department is exploring options in an effort to deescalate the feud. "We will not allow a senseless rivalry to hold this city hostage. We're pursuing charges where applicable, and anyone who continues to endanger this community will be held accountable," Biddings said. The shooting was said to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public. Anyone with information can submit it anonymously to the Harvey Police Department. Pennsylvania man pointed gun at driver before police shot him in Bensalem, officials say

A 44-year-old Levittown man pointed a gun at another driver before police shot him in Bensalem Township on Saturday, the Bucks County District Attorney's Office said. The DA's office identified the 44-year-old man who was shot as John Thomas Mathis and said that he "has a documented history of aggressive behavior and numerous open criminal cases in Bucks County." On Saturday at around 5:45 p.m., the DA's office said, officers were dispatched to Bristol Pike for a report of a man, later identified as Mathis, who was driving recklessly on a motorcycle and pulled out a gun. The victim told police that Mathis allegedly pointed a gun at his face and threatened to rob him, according to the DA's office. The victim drove away from the scene and called police, but Mathis allegedly continued to follow him. The DA's office said police arrived and parked their vehicle between the victim's car and Mathis' motorcycle. An officer allegedly gave Mathis multiple "verbal commands" before he ran away from his motorcycle and was shot by police, the DA's office said. Mathis was shot twice in the left shoulder blade area and once in his right armpit area. He's in stable condition at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, according to the DA's office. The Bensalem officer who shot Mathis has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. Mathis has multiple open criminal cases open in Bucks County, including an aggravated assault while driving under the influence, which is pending a trial date. The DA's office said that he's also pending sentencings for receiving stolen property and fleeing an incident in Middletown. Mathis also allegedly has two open state violation cases for theft by unlawful taking and retail theft. The Bristol Township Police Department also issued an arrest warrant for Mathis in connection with another road rage incident on July 27. In this case, Mathis allegedly intentionally caused two collisions. He then exited his vehicle with a baseball bat and struck another car's driver's side door and front windshield before fleeing the scene. The DA's office said Bucks County prosecutors asked for Mathis' bail to be revoked after he pleaded guilty in the Bristol Borough case in July 2023, and it was approved by a judge. In May 2025, another judge placed Mathis on pre-trial supervision with GPS monitoring, despite prosecutors objecting. Since May, the DA's office said that Mathis has "repeatedly violated his release conditions and even cut off his GPS monitor." His bail was revoked last Thursday and bench warrants were issued for Mathis in the outstanding cases. The shooting on Saturday that injured Mathis is under investigation by Bucks County detectives and the DA's office.
