ASM Set To Evolve Into ‘Think And Do Tank' To Advance National Progress
Its president, Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen, said this transformation aligns with ASM's role as both a thinker and changemaker.
'One of our key ongoing initiatives is the development of a mission-oriented national STIE system. This framework will unify STIE projects across sectors, involving researchers, public agencies, industry players and the community.
'It also provides a collaborative platform for stakeholders to work together, ultimately producing greater outcomes and impact for STIE initiatives,' he said in his speech at ASM's 30th Anniversary and the 2024/2025 Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held here last night.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang were also present at the event.
Tengku Mohd Azzman also emphasised the importance of expanding the number of Senior Fellows and new Fellows to broaden the Academy's collective intelligence and network of expertise.
'I hope all existing and new Fellows will be inspired to become outstanding contributors within this intellectual community. Together, we must act as agents of change for the nation and its people,' he said.
He added that although ASM is one of the youngest science academies in the world, it remains committed to identifying the best ways to serve the country.
Meanwhile, Universiti Tenaga Nasional Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ir Dr Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari, expressed his vision for Malaysia to become a regional robotics hub by 2030. To achieve this, he stressed the need to train educators at all levels to ensure future talent meets industry needs.

Penang launches RM296m GBS By The Sea in Technoplex Bayan Lepas
GEORGE TOWN: Penang continued to cement its status as a global business and technology hub with the official launch of 'GBS By The Sea', a landmark RM296 million development located in Technoplex Bayan Lepas. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow hailed the project as a bold statement and a clear example of Penang's transition into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy. He said GBS By The Sea is the fourth project under the global business services (GBS) initiative, spanning 290,000 square feet (sq ft) of space. 'The GBS By The Sea facility is already fully occupied, with three global industry leaders, namely Advanced Micro Devices Global Services (AMD), Celestica Platform and Cloud Solutions Malaysia and the Microsoft Knowledge Capital Centre. 'These global companies are not only investing in Penang, but they are also creating over 1,000 quality jobs for our local talent in areas like research and development (R&D), engineering, digital services and more. These are the kind of high-value, future-ready jobs that we want for Penangites,' he said during the GBS By The Sea launching ceremony in Bayan Lepas today. Also present at the ceremony were State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) Mayor Datuk A Rajendran and Penang Development Corporation (PDC) chief executive officer Datuk Aziz Bakar. Chow elaborated that the facility is not just a workplace but also equipped with a gym, cafeteria and a six-storey car park with 800 bays. He emphasised that GBS would play a vital role in Penang's next chapter, moving from being a manufacturing hub to becoming a knowledge-based and tech-forward economy. 'Projects like GBS By The Sea help us make that transition not just in words, but in real ways that matter to businesses and workers. 'With the announcement of 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which puts a strong focus on the transition to 'Made by Malaysia' and aims for higher growth and higher value creation, GBS By The Sea fits perfectly into this big picture - it's local, it's future-focused, and it brings value,' he said. Chow also announced that PDC is already working on its fifth GBS project, namely 'GBS at Technoplex', a RM500 million development offering over 400,000 sqft of space. 1.2 million jobs via TVET, digital econ

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) with the theme 'Redesigning' at the Dewan Rakyat, said that the TVET programme would also be expanded to tahfiz students to produce Madani huffaz technocrats with added value in technical expertise. The government, he said, will also expand the TVET curriculum to include the field of ageing with special incentives for students undergoing industrial training. 'TVET programmes are gaining popularity. In 2024 alone, 212,000 new admissions into TVET programmes were recorded,' he said, adding that the Madani TVET programme will be strengthened to increase the mastery of skills that can generate higher income, including for tahfiz and huffaz students. 'At the same time, the level of TVET certification will be increased by introducing three new levels of expertise, six to eight, to be equivalent to the level of higher education qualifications under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). This effort aims to recognise high skills in technical fields and expand career paths, in line with market needs,' said the prime minister. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said TVET graduates are also enjoying increasingly competitive incomes, most of which exceeded the minimum wage of RM1,700. 'About 95.6 per cent of TVET graduates are able to secure employment within six months of completing their training,' he said. He said the close collaboration between TVET institutions and industry would serve as a catalyst for technological transfer and skills enhancement in line with initiatives by the Ministry of Higher Education. 'The structure of TVET programme offerings will be re-strategised with a focus on high-growth, high-value (HGHV) and advanced technology-based industries. 'This is in line with labour market demands and strategic industry needs such as in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) project and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP),' he said. UAE, Malaysia, Rwanda Seek To Boost AI Adoption In Global South
DUBAI, July 31 (Bernama-WAM) -- The UAE, Malaysia, and Rwanda signed a strategic partnership to strengthen coordination to help boost artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in the Global South. Within the framework of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) global network, the countries will work together to promote ethics and governance in AI to help societies and economies in the Global South harness its potential, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported Thursday. Through a signing a Memorandum of Understanding, the countries agreed to expand the scope of the C4IR AI Fellowship Programme, which was initially signed by the UAE and Rwanda at the 2024 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos. bootstrap slideshow The knowledge exchange platform was created to connect leaders, innovators, and experts in the AI space. Now, with the addition of Malaysia, the expanded partnership will promote further international cooperation to support sustainable development through AI. The initiative will enable talent exchange, joint initiatives, and coordinated development of responsible AI governance frameworks led by Global South nations, according to WAM. The new agreement was witnessed by Emirati Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Omar Al Olama and Malaysian Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo. Gobind Singh said Malaysia is proud to join forces with the UAE and Rwanda in this visionary initiative to bridge global AI expertise and accelerate digital transformation for a more inclusive and sustainable future. He said this partnership involving Malaysia Centre4IR, C4IR UAE, and C4IR Rwanda reflects their collective goal for a future that is driven by responsible AI innovation.
