Mullane and Mateiu shine at Cedars Golf Championship

Gulf Today05-04-2025
The Lebanese Golf Federation, in collaboration with the Emirates Golf Federation, hosted the inaugural Cedars Championship at Al Zorah Golf and Yacht Club in Ajman.
66 amateur golfers took to the course competing for World Amature Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, Arab Golf Series points, and a spot in the upcoming HotelPlanner Tour event – UAE Challenge at Al Zorah.
The tournament was played over 54 holes, with an 18-hole Stableford format for the final round. Winning the men's Division following a six-hole playoff was UAE national team player Sam Mullane.
The exciting playoff was between Mullane and fellow EGF members Mikhail Pinto and Dan Bryne. There was a lot to play for as the winner received a Sponsors Invite to the upcoming HotelPlanner Tour event next week at Al Zorah Golf and Yacht Club.
With Sam winning the Championship (who is already playing in next week's HotelPlanner Tour event) and given the high level of competition and sportsmanship, the Emirates Golf Federation granted both Mikhail Pinto and Dan Bryne exemptions into next week's event for their second-place finish.
Winning the Ladies Division was Anca Mateiu, who fired impressive rounds of 65-68-73 for a championship total of 217, 10-under-par.
Winning the Junior Division was Daniil Sokolov, who shot one-under-par for the championship. Daniil was nine shots clear of the runner-up and was also granted a spot in next week's HotelPlanner Tour event.
During the prize presentation that was attended by EGF Chairman, Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and Vice Chairman, General Abdullah Alhashmi, the President of the Lebanese Golf Federation, Karim Salaam, expressed the importance of the brotherhood and sportsmanship that was on display this week in the UAE.
'It is important for countries to stand with other countries and although Lebanon is going through difficult times, we can use sport to be a vehicle of diplomacy.
'Thank you to the Emirates Golf Federation and to our brothers and sisters in the UAE for this opportunity. We look forward to continuing to use this championship to accomplish more than just the development of golf,' said Salaam.
The championship saw players from Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, UAE, as well as EGF members and UAE residents. It was the second event of the recently announced Arab Golf Series organized by the Arab Golf Federation.

A star is born: Lottie Woad's breakthrough victory signals arrival of amateur sensation

When a 21-year-old amateur not only wins a professional golf tournament but does so by a stunning six-shot margin, it's time for the golf world to sit up and take notice. Enter Lottie Woad, England's rising star, who captured the KPMG Women's Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour with an extraordinary display of skill and composure. Lottie's journey to this breakthrough has been swift and impressive. Her amateur career has been studded with remarkable achievements, marking her out as one of the brightest prospects in women's golf. After clinching the Surrey Ladies County Championship in 2019, Woad's rise accelerated dramatically. Now, as a standout player for Florida State University, her list of accolades reads like a checklist of golfing excellence. Stacking Up the Accolades 2023 ACC Freshman of the Year 2023 WGCA Freshman of the Year 2024 FSU Female Athlete of the Year 2024 ACC Golfer of the Year 2024 Mark H. McCormack Medal By June 2024, she had reached the pinnacle of amateur golf, becoming the world's number one-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). Earlier that year, she also triumphed at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur. Lottie has already proven her mettle on golf's biggest stages, competing in every major she's eligible for and securing a best finish of tied 10th at the 2024 AIG Women's Open. She's also been a vital part of team events like the 2023 Espirito Santo Trophy in Abu Dhabi and the 2025 Patsy Hankins Trophy, representing England and Europe with distinction. Her performance in Abu Dhabi was notable: fourth place in the three-player team event and tied fourth individually, finishing nine under par. Dominance on Irish Soil But it was in Ireland where Woad truly announced herself. Over 72 holes, she racked up 24 birdies against just three bogeys, finishing 21 under par to dominate a field packed with Solheim Cup stars, LPGA veterans, and LET winners. What stood out even more than the score was her calm, confident demeanour under pressure, a quality that sets the great apart from the good. Already a sought-after talent with a dedicated management team behind her, Lottie exemplifies the new wave of amateurs who are ready to compete and win at the highest professional level, sometimes even before officially turning pro. Asked about turning professional after her victory, Woad was measured: 'No, I'm not tempted to turn pro yet. I'm still trying to get my final two points for the LPGA. I'm trying to get those, and then we will see what happens after that.' Those 'two points' refer to the LPGA's Elite Amateur Pathway (LEAP), where 20 points are required for full membership, a goal Lottie is steadily chasing. Respect From the Elite Praise from established pros only underlines her potential. Solheim Cup star Madelene Sagstrom, who played alongside Woad in the final round, said: 'It was Lottie's week; it was wonderful to watch her play. I played a bunch of golf with her. I'm really happy with her and she's going to take European and American golf by storm very soon.' The weeks ahead will test her further. Next up is the fourth major of the year in France, with a packed schedule of important tournaments looming. But whatever happens, Lottie Woad will never forget her first professional victory in Ireland, a milestone that feels like just the beginning of an exciting career. The large crowds, the pressure of victory celebrations, dealing with the media, sponsors, and the sea of young fans eager for autographs alongside top names like Charley Hull and Georgia Hall, Woad handled it all with grace beyond her years. It's a promising sign for the future of ladies' golf. We'll be watching closely as Lottie's journey continues. Good luck, Lottie - the golf world is ready for you.

Horsey rides again: Dubai-based golfer ends decade-long drought in dramatic style

David Horsey returned to the winner's circle in sensational fashion, claiming victory at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in Normandy with a nerve-shredding birdie on the first play-off hole. It was the Dubai-based Englishman's first win in nearly a decade and came after a tense four-man showdown on the HotelPlanner Tour. The 40-year-old sealed the title at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, birdieing the 72nd hole to force a play-off with fellow Englishman James Allan, Spain's Joseba Torres, and Scotland's Daniel Young. Then, under immense pressure, Horsey hit a clutch five-iron to just three feet at the par-three 10th, the play-off hole, before calmly rolling in the birdie putt for the win. 'It's good to get it over the line,' Horsey said. 'It's been a tough road the last four or five years. I've had a few injuries, and I haven't been playing very well, so it's nice to finally start putting a series of rounds together.' A former four-time winner on the DP World Tour, Horsey's third career win on the HotelPlanner Tour shoots him 97 spots up the Road to Mallorca Rankings to 12th place—firmly within reach of the top 20 who will graduate to the DP World Tour next season. 'I've been playing well in single rounds, but to put four rounds together and win a tournament is very pleasing,' he said. 'It was also pleasing to see everything hold up under pressure. I've always felt recently that I have my game in a good place, but never thought I could do it under pressure. To see that hold up today was great, and hopefully it will for the rest of the season.' Fast Start for Horsey Horsey began the final round tied for the lead and wasted no time making his move, rolling in a long birdie putt at the first. He stayed steady through the front nine before reeling off three consecutive birdies from the 10th to move two clear of the field. A bogey on 14 was quickly erased with another birdie on 15, but a double bogey at the 17th nearly derailed his title hopes. 'I made a birdie in regulation on the play-off hole. It was the perfect five iron for me, so I could stand up there, hit it and know it wasn't going to go long,' he explained. 'It came out perfectly, and a little bit of wind off the right helped it come back to three or four feet, and I managed to hole it.' Horsey's victory adds intrigue to the remainder of the HotelPlanner Tour season. 'Hopefully I can fine-tune the feelings I've come across and kick on and win a few more,' he added. Sweden's Albin Bergstrom finished fifth at 15 under par, with local hopeful Robin Sciot-Siegrist in sixth. American Nick Carlson was solo seventh at 13 under. Overnight co-leader Eddie Pepperell withdrew from the tournament with a back injury ahead of his final round. Dubai-based Frenchman Joel Stalter closed with a 68 to finish at one under par. At the top of the Road to Mallorca standings, Italian Renato Paratore remains in first, thanks to his earlier back-to-back UAE wins. Daniel Young jumped 20 places to sixth with his runner-up finish, while Clement Charmasson moved up two spots to ninth after finishing eighth in front of home fans. The HotelPlanner Tour resumes this week with the Interwetten Open at Schladming-Dachstein Golf Club in Austria from July 3rd to 6th.

Morrison feels ‘amazing' after battling mental struggles to end 10-year drought in France

James Morrison secured a memorable victory at the €300,000 Blot Play9 at Golf Bluegreen de Pléneuf Val André on the HotelPlanner Tour, marking his first tournament win in over a decade. The Englishman, a two-time DP World Tour winner, posted a level-par 70 in the final round to finish six-under-par for the tournament, tied with Irish rising star Max Kennedy. Morrison held his nerve in a playoff, parring the first extra hole to claim his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title. This win marks a long-awaited return to the winner's circle, with Morrison's previous victories coming at the 2015 Open de España and the 2010 Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal. He takes home the €48,000 top prize and, perhaps more importantly, a renewed sense of belief. 'I feel amazing right now and I'm very proud,' said Morrison. 'I didn't play my best today, but I hung in there the best I could. I battled all the way through and hit some good shots at the right time.' The final day posed plenty of challenges, with swirling winds and firm conditions testing the field on the tricky coastal layout. 'You can't relax until the very end,' Morrison added. 'Max Kennedy played some great golf, and my journey to this point has been very different to his - I know his time will come.' Perseverance Rewarded Morrison's perseverance paid off. Having lost his DP World Tour card last year, the Englishman returned to the HotelPlanner Tour with quiet determination. His victory now propels him 153 places up the Road to Mallorca Rankings to 19th. With the top 20 at the season's end earning promotion, Morrison is suddenly well positioned for a return to the big stage. 'This win puts me in great stead for the rest of the season," he said. "The golf hasn't been the problem, it's been a mental battle these past few years. It's been so hard for me and my family, and I'm just proud to have made it back.' Morrison has been open about those mental health struggles during the week, and this breakthrough win may well give him the boost needed to carry that momentum through the rest of 2025. Elsewhere, Scotland's Daniel Young produced a stunning final-round 60 to equal the course record and finish one shot behind the leaders in solo third. Remarkably, Young admitted he wasn't even thinking about a sub-60 score, having forgotten the course was a par 70. John Gough of England fired a 63 to finish fourth at four-under, with Frenchman Oihan Guillamoundeguy and Belgian Matthis Besard tied for fifth, one stroke further back. The Road to Mallorca remains in France next week, with the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil from June 26–29. Italy's Renato Paratore, with his back-to-back wins in the UAE earlier this season, continues to lead the standings. J. Morrison (Eng): 64, 66, 74, 70 – 274 M. Kennedy (Ire): 60, 76, 68, 70 – 274 D. Young (Sco): 69, 71, 75, 60 – 275 J. Gough (Eng): 67, 71, 75, 63 – 276
