Mullane and Mateiu shine at Cedars Golf Championship
66 amateur golfers took to the course competing for World Amature Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, Arab Golf Series points, and a spot in the upcoming HotelPlanner Tour event – UAE Challenge at Al Zorah.
The tournament was played over 54 holes, with an 18-hole Stableford format for the final round. Winning the men's Division following a six-hole playoff was UAE national team player Sam Mullane.
The exciting playoff was between Mullane and fellow EGF members Mikhail Pinto and Dan Bryne. There was a lot to play for as the winner received a Sponsors Invite to the upcoming HotelPlanner Tour event next week at Al Zorah Golf and Yacht Club.
With Sam winning the Championship (who is already playing in next week's HotelPlanner Tour event) and given the high level of competition and sportsmanship, the Emirates Golf Federation granted both Mikhail Pinto and Dan Bryne exemptions into next week's event for their second-place finish.
Winning the Ladies Division was Anca Mateiu, who fired impressive rounds of 65-68-73 for a championship total of 217, 10-under-par.
Winning the Junior Division was Daniil Sokolov, who shot one-under-par for the championship. Daniil was nine shots clear of the runner-up and was also granted a spot in next week's HotelPlanner Tour event.
During the prize presentation that was attended by EGF Chairman, Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and Vice Chairman, General Abdullah Alhashmi, the President of the Lebanese Golf Federation, Karim Salaam, expressed the importance of the brotherhood and sportsmanship that was on display this week in the UAE.
'It is important for countries to stand with other countries and although Lebanon is going through difficult times, we can use sport to be a vehicle of diplomacy.
'Thank you to the Emirates Golf Federation and to our brothers and sisters in the UAE for this opportunity. We look forward to continuing to use this championship to accomplish more than just the development of golf,' said Salaam.
The championship saw players from Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, UAE, as well as EGF members and UAE residents. It was the second event of the recently announced Arab Golf Series organized by the Arab Golf Federation.

Horsey rides again: Dubai-based golfer ends decade-long drought in dramatic style
David Horsey returned to the winner's circle in sensational fashion, claiming victory at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in Normandy with a nerve-shredding birdie on the first play-off hole. It was the Dubai-based Englishman's first win in nearly a decade and came after a tense four-man showdown on the HotelPlanner Tour. The 40-year-old sealed the title at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, birdieing the 72nd hole to force a play-off with fellow Englishman James Allan, Spain's Joseba Torres, and Scotland's Daniel Young. Then, under immense pressure, Horsey hit a clutch five-iron to just three feet at the par-three 10th, the play-off hole, before calmly rolling in the birdie putt for the win. 'It's good to get it over the line,' Horsey said. 'It's been a tough road the last four or five years. I've had a few injuries, and I haven't been playing very well, so it's nice to finally start putting a series of rounds together.' It was the perfect five iron for me, so I could stand up there, hit it and know it wasn't going to go long,' he explained. 'It came out perfectly, and a little bit of wind off the right helped it come back to three or four feet, and I managed to hole it.' Horsey's victory adds intrigue to the remainder of the HotelPlanner Tour season. 'Hopefully I can fine-tune the feelings I've come across and kick on and win a few more,' he added. Morrison feels ‘amazing' after battling mental struggles to end 10-year drought in France
James Morrison secured a memorable victory at the €300,000 Blot Play9 at Golf Bluegreen de Pléneuf Val André on the HotelPlanner Tour, marking his first tournament win in over a decade. The Englishman, a two-time DP World Tour winner, posted a level-par 70 in the final round to finish six-under-par for the tournament, tied with Irish rising star Max Kennedy. Morrison held his nerve in a playoff, parring the first extra hole to claim his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title. This win marks a long-awaited return to the winner's circle, with Morrison's previous victories coming at the 2015 Open de España and the 2010 Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal. He takes home the €48,000 top prize and, perhaps more importantly, a renewed sense of belief. 'I feel amazing right now and I'm very proud,' said Morrison. His victory now propels him 153 places up the Road to Mallorca Rankings to 19th. With the top 20 at the season's end earning promotion, Morrison is suddenly well positioned for a return to the big stage. 'This win puts me in great stead for the rest of the season," he said. "The golf hasn't been the problem, it's been a mental battle these past few years. It's been so hard for me and my family, and I'm just proud to have made it back.' Morrison has been open about those mental health struggles during the week, and this breakthrough win may well give him the boost needed to carry that momentum through the rest of 2025. Elsewhere, Scotland's Daniel Young produced a stunning final-round 60 to equal the course record and finish one shot behind the leaders in solo third.
