Whittaker (26-8) is the No. 5 fighter in the official UFC middleweight rankings. Whittaker is 15-4 with the UFC since June 2014. His only losses have come to Israel Adesanya, Dricus du Plessis, and Khamzat Chimaev. Adesanya is a former UFC middleweight champ. Du Plessis is the current UFC 185-pound champion, and Chimaev is scheduled to face Du Plessis in a title fight at UFC 319 in August. In short, the 34-year-old is the gate keeper to the elite of the division.
Whittaker is coming off a nasty submission loss to Chimaev at UFC 308 in October 2024.

De Ridder (20-2) has been climbing the UFC middleweight ladder since he joined the promotion after holding the ONE middleweight and light heavyweight titles. The 34-year-old is No. 12 in the UFC 185-pound division. He is 3-0 with the promotion with stoppage wins over Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland and Bo Nickal. His win over Nickal was his most recent victory, coming in May of this year.
Robert Whittaker Vs. Reinier de Ridder Opening Odds
When BetOnline first published the betting line for the UFC Abu Dhabi 2025 main event, Whittaker was listed as the -190 betting favorite over the +165 De Ridder. Those odds have shifted slightly. Today, Whittaker is listed at -145, while De Ridder is a +125 betting underdog.
The UFC Abu Dhabi fight card co-main event was Movsar Evloev vs. Aaron Pico, but that bout fell apart earlier this month when Evloev withdrew from the UFC Abu Dhabi card because of injury.
According to MMA Junkie, the UFC plans to keep the matchup and schedule Evloev vs. Pico for a later event.
We will have more on the UFC Abu Dhabi fight card as fight night nears.

Khabib Nurmagomedov hints at Jack Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev superfight for Madison Square Garden

Jack Della Maddalena appears to have his first title defence already in the works, with the Australian on a collision course with former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. The 28-year-old captured welterweight gold at UFC 315, stunning fans with his victory over Belal Muhammad. Now, a monumental title fight awaits at Madison Square Garden. MORE: UFC Perth main event confirmed as Kiwi gets title audition Makhachev is expected to move up a division for this bout after vacating his lightweight belt earlier this year. His coach and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov hinted at the matchup during a recent fan question-and-answer appearance in New York. "This is his deal with the UFC," Nurmagomedov said. "I don't deal with the UFC. This is his problem, but we have [a] deal with them where he's gonna fight at Madison Square Garden and they said yes." The UFC is yet to officially confirm the blockbuster showdown, but looking at their schedule in years past, a return to the Garden seems likely to go down in November. For Della Maddalena, the challenge is enormous. Makhachev enters the bout with the momentum of four consecutive title defences - two of those over Della Maddalena's countryman Alex Volkanovski. The idea of the Russian stepping up in weight class adds intrigue, presenting questions over whether or not he can implement his dominant wrestling game against a bigger opponent. If finalised, the event would put both men in the frame for fighter of the year discussions, a welcome achievement to their growing legacies.

Darwin Nunez future takes fresh twist as new club make Liverpool star top summer transfer target

Nunez on AC Milan's radar Rossoneri favour Liverpool striker Al-Hilal hold rival interest Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? According to Sky in Italy, AC Milan "will make a serious attempt" to equip returning head coach Massimiliano Allegri with a new striker, with an effort to sign Nunez from Liverpool already made. For sporting director Igli Tare, the Uruguayan is considered the number one target from a list that also includes Dusan Vlahovic, Rasmus Hojlund and Arnaud Kalimuendo. THE BIGGER PICTURE Contact with Nunez's camp is said to have been made, but negotiations remain "complicated". There is rival interest from Saudi Pro League giants and Club World Cup quarter-finalists Al-Hilal, who are yet to make a formal offer. DID YOU KNOW? Milan's three centre forward from last season - Luka Jovic, Tammy Abraham, Santiago Gimenez - managed only 10 Serie A goals between then, with Gimenez the only one still at the club. A more prolific number nine is required and, at his previous best, Nunez netted 26 goals in 28 Primeira Liga games for Benfica during a breakout 2021-22 campaign in Portgual. WHAT NEXT? Nunez has been linked with Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Al-Nassr already this summer, with nothing ultimately materialising. Milan's finances might not stretch to Liverpool's reported €60 million (£52m/$70m) asking price, which is perhaps why negotiations aren't straightforward for the Rossoneri. Al-Hilal might have a better chance in that sense, if Nunez can be persuaded to leave Europe, but leaving Liverpool in some capacity is in his best interests unless he wants to spend a season on the bench behind Hugo Ekitike, and possibly Alexander Isak too.

Darwin Nunez twist could have major impact on Alexander Isak transfer to Liverpool

Newcastle's owners could end up indirectly helping Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak. That's because Al-Hilal, the club that is interested in signing Darwin Nunez from the Reds, is majoratively owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund — the same group that majoratively owns Newcastle. Nunez could leave Liverpool before the transfer window closes after three underwhelming seasons on Merseyside, and after Napoli dropped its interest several weeks ago due to Nunez's price tag, there are not many top-level European options remaining for the Uruguayan. The riches on offer in Saudi Arabia could appeal to Nunez, and it is reported by The Athletic that Al-Hilal has made the 26-year-old its top striking target after seeing Victor Osimhen move to Galatasaray. READ MORE: Eddie Howe throws Alexander Isak future into fresh doubt amid Liverpool transfer saga READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak bid, Rodrygo agrees terms, Tyler Morton to Lyon Other targets like Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak are viewed as less attainable than Nunez, which is why the Saudi Pro League club is now firmly focused on Liverpool's No.9. If Al-Hilal, funded by the PIF, signs Nunez for the Reds' reported $81 million asking price, that could be the difference between Liverpool signing Isak and Liverpool not signing Isak. Meanwhile, Isak is expected to return to Newcastle's training ground today (Monday) after ruling himself out of the pre-season tour of Asia. Isak did not travel across the world with his teammates, with the official reason being that he was carrying a slight injury, but it soon emerged what the real reason for his absence was. Isak remains keen to leave Newcastle — and he could yet get his wish, despite Liverpool seeing a $146 million bid for the player swiftly rejected last week. Despite being set to return to Newcastle's training ground, Isak has been warned by Magpies manager Eddie Howe that he won't be reintegrated before proving that he is ready to give his all for his current club. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe said. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal."
