Release Date: July 31, 2025 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Positive Points Carpenter Technology Corp (NYSE:CRS) achieved a record quarterly operating income of $151 million, marking a 21% increase over the previous year. The SAO segment reached a record operating income of $167 million, with operating margins expanding to 30.5%. The company generated $201.3 million in adjusted free cash flow during the quarter, demonstrating strong cash generation capabilities. Sales increased sequentially across all key end-use markets, with notable growth in the Aerospace and Defense, Medical, and Energy sectors. Carpenter Technology Corp (NYSE:CRS) completed several long-term agreements at the Paris Air Show, supporting ongoing growth in the Aerospace and Defense market. Negative Points Sales excluding surcharge decreased 2% year-over-year due to a 14% decline in volumes. The Medical end-use market saw a 16% decline in sales compared to the previous year's record fourth quarter. The PEP segment's net sales were down 5% from the same quarter a year ago, indicating challenges in this segment. The company anticipates planned maintenance activities in the upcoming quarter, which may impact operating income. There are concerns about inventory levels in the aerospace supply chain, particularly related to Boeing's 737 production. Q & A Highlights Q: Could you discuss the current lead times in jet engine and fasteners markets, and your expectations for pricing over the next few years? A: Tony Thene, CEO: Lead times remain extended, particularly in jet engines, and we expect them to stay that way. Pricing actions continue to be a tailwind for us, and we don't foresee any significant impact from competitors' capacity expansions. The supply-demand gap is large, and smaller investments by others are complementary, helping the industry build at a higher rate. Q: Did you approach the fiscal 2026 EBIT guidance with the same level of conservatism as the fiscal 2025 guidance? A: Tony Thene, CEO: We take our targets seriously and ensure we have a line of sight to achieve them. The market is more defined now than in May 2023, and we are confident in our ability to meet the fiscal 2026 guidance. Q: Are you seeing orders or conversations that support a reacceleration in Aerospace and Defense volumes? A: Tony Thene, CEO: Yes, particularly in defense, where demand is aggressive. In aerospace, there are two sub-groups: those tied to Boeing's 737, who may have more inventory, and those with broader offerings, who are pulling aggressively. Our bookings are up 17% to 18% sequentially, indicating positive momentum. Q: Can you frame the urgent requests from defense versus regular orders, and what does this look like over the medium term? A: Tony Thene, CEO: Defense orders are historically more uneven due to program specifics and budget dependencies. However, with clarity in the defense budget, we expect elevated order levels to continue. Q: How does your preventive maintenance strategy contribute to your long-term margin profile? A: Tony Thene, CEO: Preventive maintenance is crucial for asset availability and profitability. We use AI tools for predictive maintenance, keeping outages shorter and more targeted, which avoids long ramp-ups and maintains high operational levels. This is a strategic advantage for us.
