Digital threats a top concern for Indonesian national security

The Star01-06-2025
JAKARTA: Cyberspace is now a critical domain for Indonesia's national defence, and stronger collaboration is needed to safeguard the country's digital sovereignty, said Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid.
She said threats to national sovereignty increasingly originate in the digital domain, not just from land, sea, or air, amid a rise in cyberattacks and the spread of online disinformation.
"Cyberspace is the heart of our modern defence. Safeguarding it means securing the nation's future,' she said during a recent public lecture at the National Resilience Institute, according to a statement from her ministry.
Among recent high-profile incidents, Meutya cited a ransomware attack on Bank Syariah Indonesia in June 2024 by the LockBit 3.0 group, which demanded US$20 million and disrupted services for 15 million customers.
She also warned of the dangers posed by online falsehoods-including misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, which she said could undermine national unity, inflame political tensions, and erode public trust.
"These aren't just digital disturbances; they can threaten the ideological and social fabric of our society,' she said, adding that investment in digital security infrastructure is an urgent necessity.
To tackle these challenges, the ministry has introduced key regulations, including Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Electronic Systems Governance for Child Protection, Law No. 1 of 2024 revising the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, and Presidential Regulation No. 47 of 2023 on the National Cybersecurity Strategy.
Noting that regulations alone are insufficient, Meutya urged leaders across the civil service, military and police to spearhead digital literacy efforts throughout government institutions.
Indonesia has reported a sharp increase in cyber threats in recent years, in line with rapid digital transformation. - Bernama

Anwar appeals to Trump to help end Gaza bloodshed

Victims in Gaza rushing for food. More than 1,000 people have been reported killed while trying to receive food aid since the end of May, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to the US to pressure Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need. 'I appeal to US president Donald Trump to use his influence to press for an immediate end to the killing, stop the indiscriminate bombings, and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstruction,' he said in a video posted on social media today. Describing the situation in Gaza as a test of humanity, Anwar said entire families had been killed, and children, including babies, were among the dead. 'Others are wasting away from hunger. This appalling disregard for human life and dignity must end, for it is a violation of the most basic moral code.' He urged world leaders to act with urgency. 'Every government that believes in international law, every nation that claims to value human life, must speak with one voice.' Anwar said those who had influence over Israel must find the courage to act decisively. 'This is the hour for moral leadership. This is the time to uphold the values we claim to defend.' He said Malaysia stood ready to work with all countries to bring relief to Gaza and restore basic principles of humanity. 'Let us not be remembered as those who stood by. Let us be guided by our conscience, to answer suffering with compassion, and to pursue peace for the sake of humanity.' More than 1,000 people have been reported killed while trying to receive food aid since the end of May, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The UN said on July 15 it had recorded at least 875 killings within the past six weeks at aid points in Gaza run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and convoys run by other relief groups. The majority of those killed were in the vicinity of GHF sites, while the remaining 201 were killed on the routes of other aid convoys. Earlier today, Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia would not compromise its stance on Gaza in exchange for a better US tariff rate. He said Malaysia's position remained unchanged and that the government would continue to speak out on such issues.

Australia makes second US$525mil Aukus payment amid US review

Australia sees the nuclear-powered submarines as critical to its defence in the Indo-Pacific. (EPA Images pic) SYDNEY : Australia has paid the US A$800 million (US$525 million) in the second instalment under the Aukus nuclear submarine deal, despite an ongoing formal review of the agreement by US President Donald Trump's administration. Prime minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the latest instalment today, following an initial US$500 million paid in February. In 2023, the US, Australia and Britain unveiled details of a plan to provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines from the early 2030s to counter China's ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. Australia committed to spend A$368 billion over three decades in its biggest-ever defence deal. Canberra is due to pay the US US$2 billion by year-end to support the expansion of American submarine shipyards, Reuters reported in April. 'There's a schedule of payments to be made. We have an agreement with the US as well as with the UK, it is about increasing their capacity, their industrial capacity,' Albanese told national broadcaster ABC. 'As part of that as well, we have Australians on the ground, learning those skills.' Trump launched a formal review of Aukus in June to examine whether the pact met his 'American First' criteria. It will be led by Elbridge Colby, who in the past has expressed scepticism about Aukus. Australia, which sees the submarines as critical to its own defence as tensions grow over China's military build-up, has maintained it is confident the pact will proceed. 'We support Aukus,' Albanese said. 'We have an agreement to a treaty level, with our partners, signed, of course in San Diego with the US and UK.' Washington will sell several Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, while Britain and Australia will later build a new Aukus-class submarine.

Malaysia, South Korea to expand cooperation, says Anwar

Photo: Anwar Ibrahim Facebook KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and South Korea have agreed to continue expanding strategic cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, green transition, digitalisation, and defence, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the matter was discussed during a courtesy visit by South Korean President's Special Envoy Kim Young Choon, who is currently on a working visit to Malaysia. "Alhamdulillah, both countries continue to agree to expand cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, green transition, digital and defence,' he said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday (July 24). Anwar said that South Korea is now Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner, with total trade worth US$23.94bil (RM113bil) last year. He also welcomed South Korea's intention to finalise the free trade agreement and a memorandum of understanding in the defence industry by October. Anwar said both parties also exchanged views on preparations for the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Summit, which will be held in Gyeongju, South Korea, from Oct 31-Nov 1, the third time the country has hosted the summit after 1991 and 2005. "Malaysia supports Korea's leadership in this summit to drive a progressive and inclusive regional agenda,' he said. Anwar also extended an invitation to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to attend the 47th Asean Summit scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur this October. "Malaysia remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Korea to achieve enduring regional peace and prosperity,' he said. - Bernama.
