As Tamil cinema navigates through 2025, strong narratives are taking precedence over stardom at the box office. With a packed slate of films lined up for the second half of the year, industry insiders reflect on what worked, what didn't, and what lies ahead. 'Even fans, who turn up for the first show, aren't coming back for a second time if their favourite star's film isn't good. As we can watch films in the convenience of OTT, no one wants to come to the theatres to watch average films,' he says. 'Audiences are preferring family-centric films and going to theatres based on word of mouth. Tourist Family , Maaman , Kudumbasthan , and Madha Gaja Raja were all family entertainers that showcased the lives of the middle class. The films released in the recent past were mostly violence-oriented, and audiences seem to be moving away from such content,' opines Naganathan, a distributor. Industry insider Venkatramanan shares, 'We've had a good summer in terms of box-office collections, thanks to Tourist Family , Maaman , Good Bad Ugly , and the opening weekend of Retro .' Yet, in a year that had 128 releases, not every film found its audience. 'New films are flooding the box office every week. Many smallbudget films are releasing on 30-50 screens and getting removed within a day or two without even recovering their Qube/distribution cost,' says producer G Dhananjayan. SMALL-BUDGET MOVIES SHINE, BUT ARE THEATRES WINNING? Naganathan shares, 'The next one-and-a-half months after summer have been disastrous. Theatres require decent collections to pay their other expenses, like electricity bill and maintenance, but when there is not even a single hit in one month, the surplus received from the previous month's films goes back to nil.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Seconding him, P Dinesh Kumar of Madurai-based Guru Cinemas, says, 'After Maaman and Tourist Family , we have been desperately looking for a good movie to support us. Theatres only require good content, irrespective of whether it's a small or big film.' Delving into how the underperformance of bigger films has impacted the exhibitors, Naganathan says, 'Even when small-budget films are doing good numbers, it doesn't always imply that the entire theatre chain is benefitting from those successes. For example, if a hit film that collected ₹25 crore made ₹15 crore from the A centres, that means the profit hasn't spread to the bottom. That only happens when star movies gross 100 or 200 crore. We need films that perform big at regular intervals.' Theatrical revenue alone doesn't determine a film's success However, Dhananjayan feels that theatrical revenue can't be the only factor taken into consideration to judge a film's success, as it contributes to only 22% of a producer's revenue these days. 'Tamil producers have earned a revenue of ₹1,625 crore from theatrical, audio, satellite, overseas, dubbing, and OTT rights combined. And 64% of a producer's revenue comes not from theatrical but from other streams. This proves that unless the content is good and has a strong pre-release appeal to attract satellite, OTT, Hindi dubbing rights and music companies, it may not be easy for producers to recover their investment,' he says. 2025'S SECOND HALF: A BLEND OF CONTENT-DRIVEN AND MASS FILMS? Naganathan points out that Kollywood's true potential will be tested in the next six months. 'The second half might be tough for small-budget films because a lot of panIndian movies and star vehicles are coming up,' he shares. Venkatramanan believes that the second half will be a mix of content-driven and mass films. 'We have Rajinikanth's Coolie , Sivakarthikeyan's Madharasi , Suriya's Karuppu , Dhanush's Idly Kadai and Karthi's Sardar 2 in the lineup. Also, two Pradeep Ranganathan films are coming up Dude and Love Insurance Kompany ; he has already delivered a big hit with Dragon this year,' he shares. But Tirupur Subramanian concludes on a note of caution, 'We've star films releasing in the next six months, but how they will fare is something we can state only after watching them.'

On Sunday, June 29, Aamir Khan's comedy drama achieved a remarkable milestone as it became 6th Bollywood movie of the year to cross ₹ 100 crore mark. This mark's 7th movie of the 60-year-old actor and first in 7 years to enter ₹ 100 crore club. ‘Who'll accept if Hema Malini becomes Zeenat Aman': Yash Chopra rejected Poonam Dhillon's pitch for Yeh Vaada Raha story
Actor Poonam Dhillon recalled late filmmaker Yash Chopra's reaction when she once pitched him a film idea based on Daniel Steele's The Promise. It was later directed by Kapil Kapoor and was titled Yeh Vaada Raha (1982). Speaking with news agency ANI, Poonam revealed that he rejected the film saying that the Indian audience won't accept Hema Malini becoming Zeenat Aman. As per the plot of the story, the lead female actors changed after a cosmetic surgery. Yash Chopra didn't like Poonam Dhillon's pitch for Yeh Vaada Raha story. Poonam recalled reading the book during her trip to Japan. After returning to India she told Yash Chopra about the plot. "I told Yashji. I said, 'Yashji, ek bohot achchi kahani maini padhi hai (I have read a good story). I think it's a lovely story'. He said, 'I don't read books, you give it to Pam, she'll read it and tell me'. So I said, 'Okay'. Yeah, so Pam ji read it probably again in a day. It was a very fast read. And she gave him the narration of the subject. And I was very excited waiting for his reaction. So I said, Yash ji, you read it, Pam ji told you. He said, 'Yes, yes. But this film, our Hindi audience won't accept it'. I said, 'Why Yash ji, it's such a good story, you know, romantic story, everything'," said Poonam. As per Yash, there was a flaw in the story, which, according to him, renders it unsuitable for the Hindi audience. "He said, acha ek baat bta. Hema Malini Zeenat Aman ban jaae, kon accept karega (Tell me one thing. If Hema Malini becomes Zeenat Aman, who will accept)?' He finished my dream there and then, and the story was over. Yash Chopra toh nhi banane waale the (Chopra was not going to make it)," said Poonam. Poonam later realised Yash Chopra was right about audience's reaction Years later, Poonam was pitched a similar story by the makers of Yeh Vaada Raha, which she immediately accepted. However, after the film's struggling performance at the box office, Poonam recalled Yash's feedback on the story. "And sure, it proved right enough. At that time, plastic surgery wasn't something people would accept so easily. And that whole face has changed, and the same person is etc. So, it didn't work well at that time," she added. About Yeh Vaada Raha Yeh Vaada Raha also starred Rishi Kapoor, Tina, Rakhee and Shammi Kapoor. It was the first Hindi film where the lead female character is portrayed by two actors (Poonam and Tina) through the use of plastic surgery.
