BBC News5 hours ago

England Under-21 captain James McAtee has "no regrets" choosing Euro 2025 over the Club World Cup.The Manchester City midfielder has helped the Young Lions to Saturday's final against Germany in Bratislava. He opted to go with Lee Carsley's side over City's Club World Cup campaign and will help England try to defend their title in Slovakia."It's a tough one to answer but I don't regret my decision at all. I'm happy I'm here and my focus is now tomorrow, it's not on the Club World Cup," he said on Friday when asked if reaching the final justified his decision."This would be a special occasion for me. I'm so excited to play tomorrow. It'll be a big achievement for me and my family."Some of the lads have played in some big games and I've not sensed any nerves, but I'm sure by tomorrow there will be some. Hopefully the lads do get it, so it means something to them."McAtee scored in England's 3-1 quarter-final win over Spain, with the Young Lions also beating the Netherlands in Wednesday's semi-final.The 22-year-old has also had messages of support from former City team-mate Liam Delap, who is playing for Chelsea in the Club World Cup.He added: "I speak to Liam every day and he's happy for us. We're all happy for him, he's doing well. I've had a couple of messages from Taylor [Harwood-Bellis] so the lads back home are rooting for us and happy for us that we got here."

Spain's Aitana Bonmatí admitted to hospital with viral meningitis

Spain face a nervy wait over the availability of two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí before the Euros after manager Montse Tomé confirmed the midfielder has viral meningitis. Speaking to the Spanish media after Spain's 3-1 defeat of Japan in a pre-tournament friendly, Tomé said 'we can't talk about deadlines' for the influential Barcelona player's return, after Bonmatí posted a photo of her watching the match from a hospital bed with a cannula in her arm. 'The doctors say that it is controlled, talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled,' said Tomé. 'Aitana will be admitted and there are no deadlines yet to know for how long [she will be absent for].' The Spanish Football Federation had said that Bonmatí had been undergoing medical tests after suffering from a fever. According to reports in Spain, the fever failed to subside and so more extensive tests were carried out which confirmed she has viral meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis is caused by an infection and is the more common version of the disease, as opposed to bacterial meningitis. According to the NHS, viral meningitis tends to get better on its own within seven to 10 days. Spain begin their Euro 2025 campaign in six days' time, when they play Portugal on 3 July. They then play Belgium on 7 July and Italy on 11 July. Bonmatí was named the winner of the Ballon d'Or for a second consecutive time in October, receiving almost double the votes of closest rival for the award Caroline Graham Hansen. The technically gifted midfielder was critical to Spain's Women's World Cup triumph in 2023 and secured a sixth league title and fifth Supacopa de España this season, but was denied a fourth Champions League title by Arsenal's 1-0 defeat of Barcelona in this year's final. Liverpool chief breaks silence on Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid and reveals his disappointment behind the decision

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has revealed what he really thought about Trent Alexander-Arnold 's controversial decision to join Real Madrid. The defender caused uproar among the Reds fan base when he revealed he would be leaving the club for Spain, with it initially looking like he would be departing for free after a 20-year stay at his boyhood club. However, Arne Slot 's side did secure a £10million fee from Madrid for Alexander-Arnold to join them early and therefore play in the Club World Cup. Nevertheless, many Liverpool fans were left incensed by Alexander-Arnold's move, as they believe it was done in bad faith and did not leave the club with sufficient funds to replace him. And now, Werner has conceded that he and other club chiefs shared the disappointment of many fans. The 75-year-old businessman diplomatically thanked Alexander-Arnold for his contributions, but could not completely hide his emotions. 'We do respect the fact that Trent has moved on,' Werner told Liverpool Echo. 'I told someone recently this story about seeing Trent on the last weekend of the season, with Billy [Hogan, chief executive] and I just wanted him to know from me personally we are and were as a club thankful for all his contributions. 'He showed me a picture when he was seven years old, when he was a young kid at the academy, and I have a lot of fondness for all that he has done and so it is time for him to move and time for us to replace him. 'We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him.' Werner went on to share a standout memory of Alexander-Arnold in red, and reminisced over his assist to Divock Origi in the 2019 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. Alexander-Arnold quickly took a corner to catch Barca's defence napping, which was tapped in by Origi. The goal sealed a historic 4-0 win at Anfield and overturned a three-goal deficit from the first leg. 'I'll never forget that pass he made, the corner he took, for the fourth goal against Barcelona. 'That was just a work of genius and as a football fan, watching some of his assists, the way he would pass the ball 30-plus yards to a specific point and create a goal was wonder Real Madrid are delighted.'
