The Cleveland Guardians didn't have a massive trade deadline, despite the potential. They held onto Steven Kwan and couldn't deal with Emmanuel Clase amid his sports betting investigation.
However, they did swing one noteworthy deal, shipping off Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitching prospect Khal Stephen. A few days after the deal, former MLB executive Jim Bowden of The Athletic deemed this the best trade at the deadline, but not for the Guardians.
"The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, who has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA, could be a difference maker this October - if all goes well." Bowden writes. "In addition, Bieber gives the Jays another strong starter for 2026, though he could decline his player option. This was a steal."
Stephen is an intriguing pitching prospect who ranks 7th in the Guardians' farm system. But, Bowden believes that the addition of Bieber is incredible for the Blue Jays, especially if he can return to form once back from injury.

There's substantial risk, hence why the Guardians likely couldn't have done better than they did in the return package for Bieber. He's also unlikely to accept his $16 million player option for 2026, meaning he is, technically, a rental.
Bieber has impressed in his rehab starts and could be a massive piece for the Blue Jays, who sit atop the American League. Toronto landing Bieber was a great deal for the team, and Bowden called it the best trade at the deadline.
But, to call this a steal might be jumping the gun. Bieber has yet to face Major League hitting this season and has barely pitched in the past two years. Stephen is an unknown, but so is Bieber, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
This deal could end up as a win-win, but Bowden is already dubbing the Blue Jays as winners in this deal. There are a lot of caveats, but the acquisition of Bieber could help the Blue Jays secure the top spot in the AL, and potentially, make a deep postseason run.

SBA Communications raises annual revenue forecast on robust wireless carrier activity

(Reuters) -SBA Communications raised its annual revenue forecast and beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue on Monday, helped by steady wireless carrier activity amid rising telecom expansion. Mobile network operators have increased investments in cell towers as they ramp up 5G and network infrastructure to capitalize on growing mobile demand, benefiting SBA. "New U.S. leasing business signed up during the quarter was ahead of our expectations and benefited from continued high levels of new colocations," said CEO Brendan Cavanagh. SBA is seeing new U.S. leasing business coming more from new lease agreements than from the modification of existing leases. It leases space and manages tower sites for wireless carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Consumer demand for connectivity and bandwidth-intensive applications remains resilient, driving up demand for SBA's services. The company has also entered a deal to sell all of its Canadian operations and towers for C$446 million ($323.82 million) as part of its portfolio review. Upon closing, which is expected in the fourth quarter, the sale will be immediately accretive to its adjusted funds from operations — a key measure of cash flow. SBA now sees fiscal 2025 total revenue between $2.78 billion and $2.83 billion, compared with its earlier projection range of $2.72 billion to $2.76 billion. For the quarter ended June 30, SBA reported revenue of $699 million, beating analysts' estimate of $671.1 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company posted second-quarter adjusted FFO of $3.17 per share, compared with the $3.29 per share it reported a year ago. ($1 = 1.3773 Canadian dollars)

Mets' Frankie Montas to pitch on Saturday against Brewers, but club 'could get creative'

Mets right-hander Frankie Montas had another rough outing on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, with manager Carlos Mendoza non-committal after the game as to whether or not Montas would make his next start. Speaking on Monday afternoon, Mendoza explained that Montas will indeed pitch on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but his role is still to be determined, as the Mets could potentially opt to use an opener in front of the veteran. 'We're having those discussions here. He is going to pitch against the Brewers,' Mendoza explained. 'So, [Kodai] Senga is going to go Friday after the off day, but because we have an off day in between that series, we could get creative. "So, maybe an opener in front of him, but as of right now, on Saturday, he's going to play a part in that game. Depending on how we get through on Friday, we'll see, but like I said, on Saturday he's pitching.' Mendoza spoke with Montas about that decision, saying that Montas will prepare as if he's making the start, whether or not an opener is used. 'He's willing to do whatever it takes,' Mendoza said. After missing the bulk of the first half of the season due to a lat strain suffered in spring training, Montas has struggled since returning to the mound. In seven starts, the veteran has pitched to a 6.68 ERA and a 1.545 WHIP. He's allowed 4+ earned runs in four of those starts, and is yet to go 6.0 innings in any outing. With Montas' issues front and center, there's been plenty of chatter about whether the Mets should promote one of their top pitching prospects from Triple-A Syracuse, namely Brandon Sproat or Nolan McLean. Asked on Monday if he's been watching those two any more closely of late, Mendoza said he's always keeping an eye on the minor leaguers, though he did note that both players are seemingly ready, or at least very close to being ready, to pitch in the majors. 'I've been watching those guys for a long time,' said Mendoza. 'Every time they pitch, I read the reports, I watch some of the outings, a couple innings, but nothing changes as far as my routine goes. … I know they've been pretty good down there, and that's all they need to do. Continue to do what they've been doing.' 'They continue to put themselves in a position where, like, 'Alright, we're going to have that conversation.' They're knocking at the door. … We like where they're at in terms of their development.' Paul Blackburn Update Elsewhere on the rotation front, the plan is for Paul Blackburn to make one more rehab outing for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. After that, the Mets will have a decision to make on how to use the veteran right-hander. Blackburn has been on the IL since early July with a right shoulder impingement. In his first three outings for Syracuse, Blackburn has allowed four runs on 14 hits with 14 strikeouts to four walks in 16.2 innings
