Boys' basketball player of the year: Brayden Burries of Eastvale Roosevelt
From start to finish, Brayden Burries of Eastvale Roosevelt rose to almost every occasion, helping his team win Southern Section and state championships at the highest level.
Whether scoring, rebounding or setting up teammates with timely assists, Burries delivered repeatedly during a 35-2 season. His physicality left opponents with few choices on how to proceed.
Forever thankful & grateful for everything 🙏🏽✝️ . #AGTG #blessed pic.twitter.com/T0BhJsnAiB

'He just gets to the free-throw line and puts so much pressure on the defense and is such a physical presence and knows how to impact the game,' Harvard-Westlake coach David Rebibo said.
For a season of excellence against top opponents and delivering in big game after big game, Burries is The Times' boys' basketball player of the year.
At 6 feet 5, his size and aggressiveness played into his ability to take control of games just when Roosevelt needed him most. He was too strong for guards and two agile for forwards and centers.
His final game for Roosevelt at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento in the Open Division state final against San Francisco Archbishop Riordan produced a performance for the ages — he scored 44 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
One of the best 16 minutes of high school basketball I've ever seen by an individual. 27 points by Brayden Burries. 10 of 13 shots. 44-33 Roosevelt over Riordan. pic.twitter.com/vi3htlEF4Q

His coach, Stephen Singleton, said it wouldn't be the last time Burries played at Sacramento's NBA arena and insisted no other Roosevelt player would wear No. 5 on their jersey because his number would be retired.
'Best player in Roosevelt history,' he said.
Burries averaged 30 points per game and had so much fun playing with his friends that he said after his performance against Riordan, 'I wish there was another game.'

Burries will play in the McDonald's All-American Game on April 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. He remains uncommitted on his college choice.
Singleton, who coached former NBA center Tyson Chandler at Compton Dominguez, has no doubt that Burries is on a similar path to basketball success with his drive to excel.

Timberwolves sign forward whose only college choice was to walk-on after academic scholarship
The Minnesota Timberwolves have a new two-way player. His name is Enrique Freeman, and he's got one of the most inspirational stories in the NBA. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the signing on Friday morning. Freeman was cut by the Pacers after averaging 16.6 points per game in Summer League. Freeman's journey didn't always look destined for professional basketball. He had no college basketball offers out of high school in the Cleveland area, so he accepted an academic scholarship at the University of Akron and walked-on to the basketball team. Freeman grew four inches before his sophomore year of college and became a star in the MAC. After Akron, Freeman was the 50th overall pick in 2024 and played 22 NBA games as a rookie, averaging 2.1 points in 8.2 minutes per game. MORE: Bronny James reveals health issue caused by heart defect, cardiac arrest In the G League, he put up 16.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. And then in Summer League this year, he averaged 16.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 72.5% from the floor and 55.6% from 3. Freeman seems like the kind of late bloomer who can legitimately help a contending team. The Timberwolves won't need him to be a high-usage player, of course. But he can do so many different things on the floor that he should find a way to fit in when called upon in the NBA portion of his two-way contract. And he's worked so hard to get to this point. NBA teases OKC Thunder 2025-26 City Edition jersey announcement
Teasing their arrival, the NBA showed a glimpse of what the 2025-26 City Edition uniforms could look like. From what they posted on social media, they will have a throwback approach by bringing back a fan-favorite classic for each team. The NBA posted a graphic where each number and letter in "2025-26 NBA & Nike City Edition Remix" was replaced with a font of an NBA team's previous City Edition jersey. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, the "k" in Nike was in the same font as their infamous 2018-19 Native American heritage tribute jersey. It served as the Thunder's City Edition uniform in the final year of the Russell Westbrook and Paul George era. The fan favorite always gets mentioned among the best OKC jerseys. From some social media rumors, it looks like the font and design remain the same, but in a different color than teal. It looks like the NBA champion will bring it back —with some slight tweaks — for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren to wear in the 2025-26 season. We'll see when the NBA announces the City Edition uniforms for next season. It's one of the bigger news items of August. Everybody is also waiting for the 2025-26 regular season schedule, which should happen sometime this month.
