President Donald Trump said on Friday the US is immediately ending trade talks with Canada in response to the country's digital services tax on technology companies, calling it a "direct and blatant attack on our country."
"Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period."

Qatar urges residents to report suspected missile debris after Iran's attack

Qatar's Ministries of Defence and Ministry of Interior have jointly issued a public safety advisory, urging citizens and residents to immediately report any suspicious fragments or strange objects that may be linked to the interception of Iranian missiles. Iran launched a missile attack on Al Udeid US base in Qatar on Monday, in retaliation for US attacks on several nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic as part of the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. US President Donald Trump stated that Iran launched 14 missiles against the air base, of which 13 were intercepted and one was allowed to fall harmlessly, calling it 'a very weak response'. After the attack, Qatar summoned the Iranian ambassador and condemned the attack. Qatar called on its residents and citizens not to touch or approach any strange objects they may encounter and to immediately report them to the authorities "so that they may be dealt with in accordance with approved procedures", the joint statement clarified. Authorities stressed that "handling such materials must be done exclusively by the competent authorities, due to the possibility that they may contain hazardous substances that could pose a threat to public safety," it added. waiver of all traffic violations issued on the day of the attack for motorists.

Donald Trump hails 'giant win' after Supreme Court curbs judges' power

The US Supreme Court handed President Donald Trump a major victory on Friday by curbing the power of individual federal judges to block executive actions. Mr Trump, in an impromptu media briefing at the White House, called the decision "a giant win". "This morning, the Supreme Court has delivered a monumental victory for the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the rule of law in striking down the excessive use of nationwide injunctions interfering with the normal functioning of the executive branch," he said. The case stems from Mr Trump's order denying birthright citizenship to US-born children of parents who are in the country illegally. "Thanks to this decision, we can now promptly file to proceed with numerous policies that have been wrongly enjoyed on a nationwide basis, and some of the cases, we're talking about ending birthright citizenship, which now comes to the fore," he said. The court's 6-3 ruling, however, did not let Mr Trump's policy come into effect immediately and did not address the policy's legality. The court said nationwide injunctions issued by lower court judges "likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has granted to federal courts". The outcome was a victory for the Republican President, who has complained about individual judges putting up obstacles to his agenda. But the ruling left open the possibility that the birthright citizenship changes could remain blocked nationwide. Birthright citizenship automatically makes anyone born in the US an American citizen, including children born to parents in the country illegally. The right was enshrined soon after the Civil War in the Constitution's 14th Amendment. Mr Trump said that ruling was meant for "the babies of slaves", rather than for people "trying to scam the system". The US is among about 30 countries where birthright citizenship — the principle of jus soli or 'right of the soil' — is applied. Most are in the Americas, and Canada and Mexico are among them.

Trump says Gaza ceasefire is close, possible within a week

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he believes it is possible that a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hamas group will be reached within a week. Trump, at an Oval Office event celebrating a Congo-Rwanda accord, told reporters that he believes a ceasefire is close. He said he had been just been talking to some of the people involved in trying to reach a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the Palestinian enclave. Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. The war in Gaza was triggered when Hamas-led fighters attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Gaza's health ministry says Israel's post-Oct.7 military assault has killed over 56,000 Palestinians. The assault has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations. Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has picked up steam in the wake of the US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. A ceasefire to the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict went into effect early this week. "I think it's close. I just spoke to some of the people involved," Trump said. "We think within the next week we're going to get a ceasefire." He did not say who he has been talking to, but he has told reporters he was in near-daily contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israel-Iran conflict. Trump's surprise prediction of a possible ceasefire deal in coming days came at a time when there have been few signs that the warring parties were ready to restart serious negotiations or budge from entrenched positions. A spokesperson for US special envoy Steve Witkoff's office said they had no information to share beyond Trump's comments. Witkoff helped former President Joe Biden's aides broker a ceasefire and hostage release agreement shortly before Trump took office in January but the deal soon unravelled. Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer plans to visit Washington starting on Monday for talks with Trump administration officials about Gaza, Iran and a possible White House visit by Netanyahu, according to a source familiar with the matter. Netanyahu said on Thursday the outcome of Israel's war with Iran presented opportunities for peace that his country must not waste. "This victory presents an opportunity for a dramatic widening of peace agreements. We are working on this with enthusiasm," Netanyahu said in a statement.
