Wales v Japan TV channel finally announced days before game as Eddie Jones refuses to move kick-off

Yahoo2 days ago
BBC Wales and S4C will each show one of Wales' summer Tests from their tour of Japan next month - with the coverage being announced just days before Wales take on the Brave Blossoms.
The first Test in Kitakyushu on July 5 will be shown on BBC One Wales, while the second Test the following week in Kobe will be broadcast by S4C. The first Test will kick-off at 6am UK time, with the second Test being slightly later at 6.50am.

It's understood S4C's coverage of the second Test will have English-language commentary available on the red button.

With the eight-hour time difference, Wales will be kicking off in the middle of the afternoon in Japan - with temperatures likely to be just above 30°C in Kitakyushu this weekend.
WalesOnline understands that the BBC did try to move the kick-off back so that it wouldn't be so early in the UK.
However, Brave Blossoms coach Eddie Jones has remained steadfast on the 2pm and 2.50pm local kick-off times.

The former England and Australia coach promised to "really run Wales off their feet" in the heat.
The British and Irish Lions tour of Australia - with their warm-up matches against the Waratahs and Invitational AU & NZ side both on the same day as Wales' Tests in Japan - also made moving the kick-off time complicated, with the Lions matches kicking off at 11am UK time.
An announcement had been expected on a TV deal last week, although the situation with the kick-off time is understood to have delayed things. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack for the exclusive five-week tour diary from Wales in Japan and the Lions in Australia.
A joint statement read: "BBC Cymru Wales and S4C have announced a new broadcast deal for the live free-to-air rights for the men's two-Test tour of Japan this July.

"The first match takes place at the Mikuni World Stadium in Kitakyushu on Saturday 5 July (KO 6am) and will be broadcast live on BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer, with coverage starting at 5:45am.
"The second Test takes place at the Noevir Stadium in Kobe on Saturday 12 July (KO 6:50am), and will be broadcast live on S4C, S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer from 6:30am. English language commentary will also be available on S4C Clic and on TV via the red button.
"Sarra Elgan will present both games across the BBC and S4C. Commentary on Scrum V Live will be provided by Gareth Rhys Owen and Richie Rees, with guests including Alun Wyn Jones and Rhys Patchell.
"On S4C, Ken Owens and Rhys Patchell will join Sarra Elgan for Clwb Rygbi, with commentary from Cennydd Davies and Gwyn Jones. Gareth Rhys Owen and Richie Rees will be on the Red Button.

Sarra Elgan said: "It's a privilege to be part of the coverage for Wales' summer series in Japan across both BBC and S4C.
'These matches are a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of an all important Autumn season. Wales may not have had the results they wanted recently, but there's still plenty to be encouraged by and a chance to grow as a group.
'This tour is a chance for individuals to develop and make an impression. I'm looking forward to bringing the action, insights, and atmosphere to supporters back home, whether they're watching in English or Welsh."
Abi Tierney, CEO of Welsh Rugby Union, said: "We're delighted to confirm BBC Cymru Wales and S4C as our broadcast partners for the senior men's international summer tour to Japan.

'This partnership ensures our supporters can follow every moment of the action, whether they're watching in English or Welsh. It's especially important to us that we continue to champion the Welsh language and culture through our coverage, helping to bring the passion of Welsh rugby to audiences all over the world."
This is the second year in a row that a summer tour in Japan has seen the TV broadcast deal go down to the wire.
Last year, England played a Test in Japan before their two-Test tour of New Zealand.
However, no broadcaster came forward to cover the Test before RugbyPass ultimately ended up showing the match.

Players' union boss says Sheffield Wednesday players could terminate contracts over missed payments

Professional Footballers' Association CEO Maheta Molango has confirmed that the players' union believes many of Sheffield Wednesday's senior players could terminate their contracts following the Championship club's 'serious and/or persistent' failure to pay wages on time. The four-time English champions were meant to pay June's wages on Monday but club owner Dejphon Chansiri decided to pay only the club's under-21 players, as they have the highest value in the transfer market, and a portion of the salaries owed to non-playing staff. Advertisement The Thai businessman has also paid manager Danny Rohl in full, which means Wednesday would get some financial compensation if a rival club came in for the German. Almost everyone else, though, appears to be free to leave. Under FIFA's global rules, players can terminate their contracts if they are paid late for two consecutive months, although they must give 15 days' notice in writing, during which time the clubs can rectify the situation by paying the players what they are owed. Molango, however, clarified that Wednesday's players are probably able to terminate their contracts now under the terms of the standard players' contract used in English football. 'The standard contract foresees certain situations where you would be able to terminate your contract. This is when there is a serious and/or persistent breach. This is what we will be looking at,' he said. 'Unfortunately, Sheffield Wednesday have a pattern of late payments – I think it's the third time in four months. 'We've been in touch with the players. Our role is not to tell them what they need to do, (it is) to give them the tools and say, 'this is what you could do if those criteria are met'. 'Then it is for them to assess what they want to do. I wouldn't take it for granted that just because certain criteria are met, automatically someone just terminates their contract. There are other considerations. 'It's not an easy situation, as you can imagine, because ultimately, you know, people need to be paid.' Ironically, Molango was speaking to reporters at the PFA's pre-season camp for out-of-contract players at a spa hotel near Leicester. 'For me, it's a bit shocking because normally this is stuff you see in other countries I have played in, but not in England,' added the Swiss-born Italian, who enjoyed stints with clubs in England, Germany and Spain. Advertisement 'So, we really want to be strong on that. This is something that we will not tolerate and we will be very much on top of it. It's not a good situation but we hope that somehow there could be a positive resolution to it.' The EFL has already given Wednesday a three-window transfer ban for late payments to players, staff and HMRC, and has charged Chansiri for the late salary payments in March and May. The club has appealed against these sanctions. In the meantime, the South Yorkshire side are up for sale but currently have nowhere to train, as a new pitch at their training ground is not ready to use, and no pre-season fixtures have been arranged. Cameron Norrie rescues second-round comeback win to send Frances Tiafoe out of Wimbledon

Frances Tiafoe is the latest seed to exit Wimbledon, after British No. 2 Cameron Norrie came from a set down to record a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 victory. The 27-year-old suffered the same fate as his compatriots Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who exited the tournament on Tuesday. But where they both lost in straight sets, Tiafoe will rue a truly missed opportunity, having put himself in the position to claim a two-set lead. Advertisement The No. 12 seed, who despite facing a home favourite received a good reception on Centre Court, found himself with three break-point opportunities to take a 5-4 lead in the second set, at which point he would have been serving to go two sets up. After a backhand into the net and two near-beauties dropping just long, Tiafoe's chance was gone and the American never recovered. After an assured opening set-and-a-half, Tiafoe seemed to suddenly make hard work of his service games. Norrie, who reached the semifinals in 2022, started dictating with his sizzling left-handed forehand. Tiafoe's game, typically thunderous, turned flat. After they traded breaks early in the third set, the games rattled along without a single deuce until Norrie carved an opening at 4-3 up with Tiafoe serving. Gaining two break points for the chance to serve for the set, he provided the clinical touch his opponent couldn't, albeit at the second opportunity, to forge ahead. A break of nearly seven minutes allowed Tiafoe to gather his thoughts before the fourth set. While he left the court, Norrie sat patiently, almost watching his momentum fade away. The American returned a renewed competitor, and battled hard to preserve his place in the tournament. Eight aces in the fourth set helped him secure some headway on serve, and when broken midway through the fourth set, he played perhaps his best game of the match so far to gain an immediate break back. Norrie, though, was bullish in his attempts to close it out in four sets. Brave in his striking, he grazed the outside of the sidelines on multiple occasions to push Tiafoe wide, into the corner, and on the back foot. With Tiafoe growing frustrated by a couple of line calls in the latter stages, a break to 15 allowed Norrie to serve for the match, and he did just that. Advertisement 'I was really happy when I saw the schedule and I'm on Court 1,' Norrie said on court. 'I think we both played a really high level. I stayed so calm, playing point-for-point. I served really well, was enjoying the battle. It's really nice to play Frances in a big match here at Wimbledon. I was really happy with my level, I didn't drop too much. 'I was just trying to take it all in and enjoy it, smile as much as I could. It was a really nice experience today, and I was really happy with my level. The enjoyment factor was really high as well.' Norrie moves on to face No. 23 seed Jiří Lehečka or Mattia Bellucci in the third round, while Tiafoe becomes the 14th men's seed to exit within the first two rounds.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Mercedes F1 team has unveiled new racing overalls for its drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone. While a lot of the design remains unchanged, Mercedes-AMG's logo will sit there in bright orange. The subtle change creates great contrast with the black background. Not to forget the aqua blue touch that completes the overall look. The orange Mercedes logo will also feature on the W16 F1 car this weekend to celebrate the launch of the AMG GT XX. Mercedes also confirmed that Russell and Antonelli will sport helmets with a dash of orange for the celebratory weekend. Addressing the updated livery for this weekend, Mercedes said in a statement: "It's all to do with our celebration of the three-pointed star's past, present, and future, as F1 gets set to celebrate its 75th anniversary, at the home of the very first F1 World Championship race in 1950. More Andrej ISAKOVIC / AFP/Getty Images "The future will be seen with the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, Mercedes-AMG's pioneering technology programme, that recently launched at Mercedes-AMG's Affalterbach headquarters with George, Kimi and Valtteri. "A concept car that offers insight into the first series-production model based on high performance will be on display at Silverstone. The concept car's eye-catching sunset beam orange livery is inspired by the revolutionary Mercedes C111 vehicles of the 1960s and 1970s. "The sunset beam orange accents will feature on the W16 including the famous three-pointed stars on its nose and engine cover, driver overalls, and both George and Kimi will run special helmets incorporating the colour in celebration of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX launch. "The high-voltage battery in the CONCEPT AMG GT XX is a completely new development. It benefits from all the experience from the AMG ONE and Formula 1 as well as the knowledge of the best engineers from Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in Brixworth." Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development and Procurement, said: "The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise – from Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach and YASA in the UK to our Formula 1 drivetrain experts at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. "Together, they have developed the CONCEPT AMG GT XX and are providing an insight into pioneering drivetrain technology and the future of performance."
