NBA mock draft 2025: AI predictions roundup for first round picks

USA Today25-06-2025
Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper are the two players and picks NBA mock drafts and AI agree on.
If the folks who devise mock drafts and the data and algorithms that fuel artificial intelligence are correct, the first two picks of the 2025 NBA draft are a near certainty at this point, despite still being a week away.
Cooper Flagg is going to be the No. 1 selection by the Dallas Mavericks and the Rutgers guard Dylan Harper will go No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs when the NBA convenes in Brooklyn beginning Wednesday, June 25 for the draft. Almost every mock draft, including the most recent one produced by USA TODAY's NBA experts, has them being chosen in that order. But so does almost every major AI platform.
USA TODAY Sports asked five AI programs ‒ Microsoft Copilot AI, Meta AI, Grok AI, Google Gemini AI, ChatGPT AI ‒ to produce simulations of every pick during the 2025 NBA draft first round. Each one had Flagg as the No. 1 pick and Harper as the No. 2 choice. After that, however, there wasn't much consensus between the humans and AI.
Baylor's VJ Edgecombe, Rutgers wing Ace Bailey, Duke's Kon Knueppel and Texas guard Tre Johnson were the only other consensus top-10 picks, according to the AI projections. There were 45 players chosen overall among the various AI projections for the 30 spots in the first round and a wide range of outcomes, particularly outside the lottery selections.
Here's a breakdown of each AI simulation for the first round of the 2025 NBA draft, as well as how they compare to the latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft:

Note: AI simulations and USA TODAY Sports mock draft were conducted prior to the Desmond Bane trade on June 15 in which the Memphis Grizzlies acquired this pick from the Orlando Magic.

San Antonio Spurs Should Trade Two Untouchable Assets This Summer

San Antonio Spurs Should Trade Two Untouchable Assets This Summer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Antonio Spurs drafted Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, and then signed center Luke Kornet in free agency, although they are not done making moves. Advertisement At least, they shouldn't be. With three roster spots left and plenty of trade assets, the Spurs could pull off a deal for an established star, with hopes still hinging on Giannis Antetokounmpo. The fanbase is incredibly divided regarding who is "untouchable" or not. Some say that players like Jeremy Sochan are a central part of the team, and others are begging for him to be traded for anything. However, two assets are rapidly losing value, and they need to be flipped soon: the draft picks the Atlanta Hawks owe the Spurs in 2026 (swap) and 2027 (unprotected). Those assets were once prized by fans and the team, although they should be moved sooner rather than later. Advertisement The Hawks lost Caris LeVert this offseason, but have already added Kristaps Porzingis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Luke Kennard, adding them next to Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, and Zaccharie Risacher. On top of that, they drafted Asa Newell 23rd overall and picked up an unprotected pick next year from the New Orleans Pelicans. On August 2, Young will be eligible to sign an extension, and the Spurs should have traded those draft picks by then. In a weak Eastern Conference, Atlanta should be able to post an excellent record and rise up the standings, pushing those picks out of the lottery and into the late first round. "The Hawks are positioned to go from missing the postseason to a sustainable pursuit of home-court advantage if they can build off last year's momentum," wrote The Athletic's Jared Weiss. "With Risacher finally finding his footing late in the season, the Hawks may once again be ahead of schedule in this rapid rebuild." Those picks have some value, especially the 2027 one, but once Atlanta locks down Young long term, don't expect San Antonio to be able to land a marquee young talent in drafts to come, and it would simply be better to add a win-now talent to fill positions of need. San Antonio Spurs Break Silence After Free Agency News

San Antonio Spurs Break Silence After Free Agency News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Antonio Spurs fans rejoiced on the first day of NBA free agency as the team finally added a backup center. Luke Kornet, Finals winner with the Boston Celtics, agreed to a deal with San Antonio to play behind Victor Wembanyama. Advertisement While fans were thrilled with the news, the Spurs ended up losing a fan favorite, as Georgian forward Sandro Mamukelashvili agreed to a two-year deal with the Toronto Raptors. Mamukelashvili averaged 6.2 points in three seasons with the Spurs and has long been a fan favorite, winning over hearts long before he scored 30 points in a shocking upset against the New York Knicks. While losing Mamu hurt the locker room, everyone knows that he will get more minutes and money on a new team, and no one is blaming him for signing elsewhere or the Spurs for doing little to prevent him from walking. "Thank you SA! Best of luck and love always," he posted on social media. Advertisement While he is hopefully onto bigger and better things, his teammates weren't happy to see him leave, either, and Jeremy Sochan pitched in on social media. While Mamu didn't get a ton of playing time, he and Keldon Johnson have long been two of the more vocal locker room presences, and whenever he stepped onto the court, he was met with thunderous applause. Mamukelashvili will be behind Scottie Barnes, Collin Murray-Boyles, Jakob Poeltl, and perhaps Jonathan Mogbo, although it is expected that he will quickly endear himself to the Canadian fan base. Trendon Watford reacts to joining Sixers, has a message for fans

The Philadelphia 76ers made their first move of free agency when they brought in former Brooklyn Nets guard Trendon Watford on a reported 2-year $5.3 million deal. He averaged 10.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 46.9% from the floor and 33% from deep in 44 games. Watford is a player who uses his athleticism and handles to get to the basket and get his points, so his ability to handle the ball will be a big help to the Sixers. This current era of the NBA focuses a lot on wing depth and extra ball-handlers to make things move in the right direction so Watford helps in that regard. With his deal now official, Watford took to Twitter to give his reaction to joining the Sixers in the free agency period. Watford then found a Twitter video of his highlights from the 2024-25 season--a year in which he averaged a career high in points--and had a message for everybody. It sounds like he has more in store for Sixers fans in the coming season. His fit could prove to be a bit clunky when considering he isn't a great shooter, but he can keep defenses honest and one has to believe coach Nick Nurse will find a role for Watford. He is also a smart player who understands how to play this game so he will find his niche in Philadelphia when the time comes.
