
A Guide To Support Newcomers Settling In Our District

The Newcomers Guide provides information on how to find a place to live, work, access health care, connect with your community, learn English, manage money and finances, what to do in case of an emergency, and much more.
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is proud to share a Newcomers Guide to the Queenstown Lakes District, a resource developed in collaboration with support service organisations, local education providers and businesses, and newcomers, to assist those moving to our district.
QLDC Welcoming Communities Coordinator Silvia Dancose is delighted to launch the new guide to help those in the process of moving to or arriving in Queenstown, Wānaka and other towns in the district.
'Moving here is an exciting opportunity but can also be challenging. The guide provides newcomers with valuable local resources and services to help them adjust to life in their new home,' said Ms Dancose.
'Having all this information accessible in one place will play a key role in helping those who choose this part of Aotearoa New Zealand to live, work or study to feel more welcome and connected, and enable them to foster a sense of community,' she said.
The Newcomers Guide provides information on how to find a place to live, work, access health care, connect with your community, learn English, manage money and finances, what to do in case of an emergency, and much more.
QLDC People and Capability Director Katie Church shares the benefit of including the Newcomers Guide as part of QLDC's onboarding resources.
'For many, moving to our district is often an opportunity to start a new job and build a new life, it's important to help make the transition smoother and more successful by providing guidance and resources to newcomers and their families,' said Ms Church.
'This is great resource for employers to consider offering as part of their on-boarding process, especially for employees who are new to Aotearoa New Zealand and the region,' she said.
Since May, a series of small launch events have been held with support service organisations, the health, business and education sectors, and Pacific and other migrant community groups.

Printed versions of the Newcomers Guide can be found at QLDC offices, libraires, sport and recreation centres and other supporting organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau, Community Link Upper Clutha, NZ Police, Salvation Army, Plunket and local schools.
Developing the Newcomers Guide is an action from the three-year Welcoming Plan that was created by QLDC and the community to reflect the unique characteristics of our place and people, to ensure that all newcomers can thrive.
Having a community led Welcoming Plan enabled QLDC to gain accreditation as an 'Established Welcoming Community' by Immigration New Zealand in February 2025. This marked a milestone in Council's commitment to continue to make this district welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

Teenagers who gain work experience at school more likely to be employed by age 20

(File photo) Photo: Supplied/ UCOL Teenagers who gain trade and workplace experience at school are more likely to get a qualification and complete apprenticeships, a report finds. A Ministry of Education report said students who participated in the Gateway and Trades Academy programmes were also more likely to be in substantial employment by the age of 20 than other students with similar characteristics. The report considered the cohorts that participated in the programmes in 2014 and in 2018 and compared their education and employment outcomes with similar students who did not participate. It said Gateway was set up in 2001 and supported short-term, work-based placements while Trades Academies had provided learning in trades-related fields since 2010. "Both programmes increased the likelihood of students staying in education at age 17 and achieving a Level 2 or higher qualification by age 18. "These effects were consistent across genders and ethnic groups," the report said. "Men in both programmes were more likely to enrol in and complete apprenticeships, though rates remained lower for Māori and Pacific men. Women's apprenticeship participation remained low. "Both programmes reduced the likelihood of being in limited employment and increased students being in substantial employment, particularly for men. "Gateway had a stronger effect than Trades Academies in reducing limited employment for women, especially Māori and Pacific women." The report said 87-90 percent of Gateway and Trades Academy students had a level two qualification by the age of 18, compared with 78-79 percent for similar students who had done neither programme. It said 10-12 percent had completed an apprenticeship by age 24, compared with six percent for similar students. About a quarter of the group of similar students were in limited employment when they were 18, compared to 16-19 percent for the cohorts that had participated in the programmes. By age 20, 46-53 percent of the Trades Academy and Gateway cohorts were in substantial employment, compared with 35-38 percent for the group that had done neither programme. The report said the programmes appeared to have "a protective role for educational participation and achievement during the pandemic". Fiji govt says shipping company violated maritime and environment obligations

Earlier this month, Goundar Shipping's vessel Lomaiviti Princess II capsized after being towed out of Suva Harbour by the Fiji Ports Authority and has since spilled oil. In a statement, the Joint Maritime Environment Committee said the that the ship had been non-operational since 2019, and Goundar Shipping should have removed and defuelled the vessel. It said the company has a legal duty to exercise reasonable care in managing its vessel to prevent harm to the marine environment and other port users, which they breached. Minister for Enviroment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu said there are no exemptions when it comes to environmental protection. "We will not allow Fiji's ports and waters to become dumping grounds." The committee statement said Fiji Ports undertook the relocation of the Lomaiviti Princess II after Goundar Shipping failed to act on the removal orders issued . This was done under the authority of regulation 78 of the Sea Ports Management Regulations 2008. RNZ Pacific has reached out to Goundar Shipping for comment. The company's director has previously declined several times to comment on this matter. The Climate Change Ministry also established Goundar Shipping does not hold a valid waste disposal permit for any of its vessels, the statement said. "It must also be made clear that should GSL argue that they were not aware of their waste disposal permit obligations under EMA 2005, that Section 37 would apply, whereby any damage caused to the environment through discharge of waste or pollutant from the facility, activity or undertaking, the body corporate is liable for remedial actions," the statement said. The committee said Fiji Ports has been "actively pursuing recovery efforts to prevent further spillage". It said Fiji Ports has also commenced discussions with three potential service providers for underwater inspection and removal of any oil/sludge inside the vessel. This process will take approximately four to eight weeks Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau has directed that a thorough maritime investigation be conducted into the incident to ascertain the cause of the incident, determine responsibility, and identify any gaps in standard operating procedures.
