Rupee weakens 12 paise to settle at 86.52 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 86.59 and hit the lowest level of 86.63 against the greenback. The unit touched the intra-day peak of 86.47 before ending the session at 86.52, registering a loss of 12 paise from its previous closing level. A strengthening American currency overseas and foreign fund outflows further weighed on the local unit, forex traders said. Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) The rupee declined 12 paise to settle at 86.52 against the US dollar on Friday, tracking negative domestic equity markets and surging global crude oil prices. On Thursday, the rupee saw some initial recovery but ended the session just 1 paisa higher at 86.40 against the US dollar. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said the rupee weakened due to a surge in crude oil prices and weakness in the domestic markets, which also fuelled the withdrawal of foreign institutional investors. He said the rupee is expected to trade with a slight negative bias amid uncertainty ahead of the August 1 trade deal deadline and geopolitical tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. 'Traders may take cues from the durable goods orders data from the US. Investors may remain cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan's monetary policy decisions next week. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 86.30 to Rs 86.90,' Choudhary added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.33 per cent to 97.44. Analysts attributed the recovery in the dollar index to favourable employment data in the US. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, went up by 0.42 per cent to USD 69.47 per barrel in futures trade, as developing trade agreements have supported the upward movement in Brent oil prices. Forex traders said the uncertainty over the India-US trade deal has been an overhang for the forex market. If the discussions fail or get delayed, Indian exporters could face fresh pressure — adding to the rupee's challenges. However, if a deal is reached, it could offer a much-needed breather. Until then, the uncertainty is likely to keep market participants cautious. Meanwhile, in the domestic equity market, Sensex crashed 721.08 points or 0.88 per cent to 81,463.09, while Nifty tanked 225.10 points or 0.90 per cent to 24,837. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,979.96 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data. The latest RBI data released on Friday showed India's forex reserve declined by USD 1.183 billion to USD 695.489 billion during the week ended July 18. Odisha logs rise in maritime trade, logistics capabilities

Bhubaneswar, July 26 (UNI) Odisha's maritime trade and logistics capabilities have strengthened substantially, both domestically and globally, officials claimed on Saturday. Powered by a futuristic and policy-based approach to transform its maritime sector, Odisha is marching ahead following the initiatives by the Odisha Maritime Board and Commerce & Transport Department, they said. The government's initiative includes modernising and expanding key ports, creating robust, port-linked economic ecosystems, they said. Cargo handling capacities at non-major ports have reached 80 MTPA, with Dhamra Port handling 46.08 MTPA and Gopalpur Port handling 06 MTPA cargo in the FY 2024-25, leading to a substantial revenue generation of INR 306.15 Crore for the State in FY 2024-25. Paradip Port Authority, the major port in Odisha has once again come up at the largest cargo handling major port in India while handling 150.41 MTPA Cargo in FY 2024-25. The introduction of advanced port technologies and deeper berths is opening new avenues for trade, industry, and regional integration. Internationally, improved connectivity through Dhamra and Gopalpur ports has made Odisha a crucial hub for global commerce, enhancing export-import ties and market access. Domestically, focus on better coastal shipping routes and feeder services have improved connectivity to industrial and agricultural centres, ensuring seamless last-mile delivery of goods. The execution of concession agreement with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the establishment of a captive jetty to handle cargo for its Integrated Steel Plant highlights the state's dedication to supporting industrial growth through specialised maritime infrastructure. The said project shall bring a whopping investment of Rs 2,104 Cr and employment generation (direct & indirect) of nearly 3,450 persons. On the other hand, the concession agreement with the Gopalpur Ports Ltd. has also been revised to bring into effect the shareholding change of 95% equity shares to Adani Ports & SEZ. This shall bring in an investment of INR 16,554 Cr with direct & indirect employment generation of about 5,000 people. The efforts emphasise the holistic, strategic and economic development of the state through leveraging its coastline. To bolster the requirement of a skilled workforce in maritime training, simulators have been installed at the Crew Training Institute Chandbali and Odisha Maritime Academy, offering realistic ship operation simulations. Furthermore, to improve safety in inland water transport, the Directorate Ports & IWT has distributed nearly 35,000 life-saving equipment (lifebuoys, life jackets and fire extinguishers) to boat owners with a 95% subsidy, concluded the officials. Kuwait introduces new airport rule: Declare cash, gold, jewellery over KWD 3,000 or face penalties

In a recent update, Kuwait has implemented stricter enforcement of customs regulations at its international airports including Kuwait International Airport. According to people visiting Kuwait will have to declare any cash or high-value items which sum up more than Kuwaiti Dinar 3,000 (roughly INR 8,49,387). The new rule was implemented in July. It is done to align with international anti-money laundering and anti-smuggling. Here are five things travellers should know to avoid penalties. Gold Any precious metals Jewellery, even if you are wearing them Luxury watches Any branded accessories High-end electronics Bearer instruments such as bonds, cheques, or promissory notes This rule is applicable to all foreign tourists, expats, returning citizens, and GCC nationals. What was the need of this rule According to Kuwait's General Administration of Customs, the new rule is a part of the effort to fight financial crimes including money laundering, illegal remittances, and smuggling. The move aligns with the country's obligations under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the World Customs Organization (WCO). With all this, Kuwait, a major Gulf country, is making sure it complies with global norms. Where to declare the valuables Those carrying valuables or cash must declare them at the customs checkpoint before leaving or entering the terminal area. There are two main ways to do this: At the airport : One can declare the valuable at the designated customs counters near the baggage claim and exit areas. Online : Travellers can also do pre-arrival declarations via Kuwait's electronic customs portal. Also make sure you are carrying all supporting documents, such as invoices, receipts, or proof of ownership. What if you don't declare For those who don't follow the rule, it can have serious consequences. It includes: Immediate seizure of undeclared cash or goods Fines and penalties Legal proceedings under Kuwait's customs and anti-financial crime laws Temporary detention or blacklisting (in some cases) Tips for Travellers Here are some important tips to help travellers stay on the right side of the law: Know the value: Before arriving at the airport, make sure you assess your assets Keep valuables in hand luggage: Items like gold, watches, and electronics.
