NTSB issues urgent safety bulletin about engines found in some Boeing 737 Max jets
The warning comes after two incidents involving Southwest Airlines planes equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines that experienced bird strikes in 2023.
The NTSB said that these CFM engines have a safety feature, called a load reduction device, that can inadvertently damage the oil system of the engines once it activates after a bird strike. The damage can result in smoke forming from hot oil released into the engine and entering the ventilation system and ultimately the cockpit or passenger cabin.
The NTSB investigated an incident in December 2023 involving a Southwest Airlines plane that struck a bird while taking off from New Orleans. The plane landed quickly after "acrid white smoke" filled the cockpit and was so thick that the captain said it was hard to see the instrument panel.
Southwest Adds 'Powerful' Cockpit Alert System To Detect Runway Danger
Another incident nine months earlier involving similar engine damage happened on another Southwest flight from Havana, Cuba, after birds were ingested into an engine shortly after takeoff, resulting in smoke filling the cabin.

In both cases, the flights landed safely, and no one was injured.
The NTSB also recommended evaluating the potential for the same issue with CFM's LEAP-1A and LEAP-1C engines, which are used on some Airbus A320neo planes and C919 jets made by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
CFM is owned by GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines.
Boeing Shares Slide After Air India Crash
The Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing both said they agreed with the NTSB recommendations and have already warned airlines and pilots about the problem.
"We advised operators to evaluate their procedures and crew training to ensure they address this potential issue," the FAA said. "When the engine manufacturer develops a permanent mitigation, we will require operators to implement it within an appropriate timeframe."
Boeing said that CFM and Boeing "have been working on a software design update."

Cyngn said it raised $32 million in a shelf offering last week, and that will cover its expenses through 2027. The maker of autonomous industrial vehicles recently announced a collaboration agreement with Nvidia. Cyngn has moved to a bigger headquarters to keep up with of Cyngn (CYN) took off Wednesday when the maker of self-driving industrial vehicles announced it raised enough cash in a shelf offering to cover its expenses through 2027. Tesla sales fell sharply in Q2 as Musk backlash and competition chipped away at company's dominance
NEW YORK (AP) — Sales of Tesla electric cars fell sharply in the last three months as boycotts over Elon Musk's political views continue to keep buyers away, a significant development given expectations that anger with the company's billionaire CEO would have faded by now. The company reported a 13% plunge in sales on Wednesday in another sign that Musk's embrace of U.S. President Donald Trump and far-right politicians in Europe has had a deep and enduring hit to Tesla's brand appeal. The new figures also suggest that Tesla could disappoint when it announces second quarter earnings later this month. In the first three months of this year, net income fell 71%. Sales fell to 384,122 in April through June, down from 443,956 in the same period last year. During this period, Musk formally left the Trump administration as a cost-cutting czar and hopes rose that sales would recover. Sales of the Models 3 and Y totaled 373,728, above the estimate of 356,000 from Wall Street analysts. Tesla shares rose about 1.5% in early trading. Tesla is also facing stiff competition from other electric makers, especially in Europe where China's BYD has taken a bite out of its market share. Musk has acknowledged that his work as head of the Department of Government Efficiency and his embrace of European far-right candidates have hurt the company. But he attributed much of the sales plunge to customers holding off while they waited for new versions of Tesla's best selling Model Y, and recently predicted a major turnaround in sales. The new figures come as the company is focusing less on coming out with new models and more on robots, self-driving technology and robotaxis ferrying passengers around without anyone behind the wheel. Tesla is in the midst of a test run of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, that seems to have gone smoothly for the most part. But it also has drawn the scrutiny of federal car safety regulators because of a few mishaps, including one case in which a Tesla cab was shown on a widely shared video heading down an opposing lane. A record-breaking donation from a privately held company aims to offset the cost of higher education for students, under- and unemployed persons in three of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. 1-800-TruckWreck 2025 Making a Difference Scholarships - Dunbar High School 1-800-TruckWreck 2025 Making a Difference Scholarships - South Atlanta High School Dallas, TX, July 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- 1-800-TruckWreck, powered by Witherite Law Group, announced that for the third consecutive year it has made a record-breaking donation from a privately held company to fund educational scholarships through its 'Making a Difference' Scholarship and job-readiness programs. Since inception, 619 students have received the scholarship, and 577 scholarships have been renewed, making the financial contribution over $2.94 million to individuals interested in pursuing higher education in the Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth 1-800-TruckWreck office locations. Post-secondary education is critical for career success, as it offers the potential for improved job prospects, career advancement opportunities, greater job security and higher earning potential, as well as opportunities for personal growth. Though, the rising cost of attending college, university, vocational and technical training schools makes attending unattainable for the majority. 1-800-TruckWreck and its partners, Fort Worth ISD, Atlanta Public Schools, Crete-Monee School District and the Dunbar Vocational Career Academy, are working together to assist students who want to further their education. 'For those who can't afford college outright, accruing overwhelming student loan debt is a valid concern. Financial assistance can be a lifeline to help students further their education, enhance their skills and better position themselves for jobs of the future,' said Amy Witherite, owner of Witherite Law Group and 1-800-TruckWreck. 'We're proud to say that for 11 years our scholarship has helped make college a reality for thousands of individuals, and we have no doubt that their societal contributions will not only change the trajectory of their lives, but also their families and communities.' This year, 173 graduating seniors were awarded $432,500 in scholarships; 5 students chosen by special selection received $12,500 in scholarships; and $447,500 in scholarships will be renewed for an estimated 179 previous recipients who maintained a 2.5 GPA and took at least 12 credit hours, for a total of $892,500 in scholarship funds awarded by 1-800-TruckWreck. Additionally, 23 students at the Dunbar Vocational Career Academy received a total of $57,500 in funds awarded by 1-800-TruckWreck. The grand total of educational funding provided by 1-800-TruckWreck this year is $950,000. 'Thanks to the financial relief this scholarship has provided, I haven't had to work as many hours just to stay afloat. That freedom has allowed me to truly engage in my Georgia Tech experience and pursue leadership and involvement opportunities I'm passionate about,' said GeNaya Hough, student at Georgia Tech. 'The 'Making a Difference' Scholarship has truly lived up to its name in my life. It has helped me move through obstacles with confidence and focus on becoming the best version of myself, not just for my own future, but so I can continue giving back and supporting others, just like this scholarship has supported me.' Amy Witherite is committed to being an integral part of the communities she serves via 1-800-TruckWreck. As the daughter of a teacher, she understands and has a heart for those who need extra assistance – especially youth – and has used her success to fill the gaps for those in need. She has partnered with several businesses and organizations to enrich the lives of children and families. 'Coming from a community with limited resources for guidance and mentorship, the support I've received from Ms. Witherite and her team has been transformative. Their belief in me has not only opened doors but has also instilled in me a greater sense of confidence and determination as I pursue my ambitions in law,' said Deona Davis, student at the University of Georgia. Created in 2014, the 'Making a Difference' Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated leadership in their schools and communities. ### ABOUT 1-800-TRUCKWRECK/WITHERITE LAW GROUP1-800-TruckWreck/Witherite Law Group is a personal injury law firm founded in 2001 with offices in Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Dallas and Fort Worth.
