Government hopeful to finalise early deal with U.S. by July 9, on track for broader deal by fall

The Hindu16-06-2025

The government is on track and hopeful to complete an initial tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement by the deadline of July 9, and a wider first tranche of the Agreement by Fall of this year, according to officials in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
'On the India-US BTA, the US team was here in India for six days of negotiations from June 6-11,' Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Chief Negotiator on India's behalf in the India-U.S. BTA negotiations, said at a press briefing. 'We are progressing towards our target of finalising tranche one by Fall of 2025.'
The Fall deadline — which is typically September to November in the U.S. — was first mentioned in a joint statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump following Mr. Modi's trip to the U.S. in February this year.
Regarding an early, abridged tranche of the deal, Commerce Secretary Sunil Berthwal said the government was hopeful of completing it by July 9, after which Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs would kick in again.
'We are working out the early tranche, and as you are aware that there is a day, July 9, before that we would like to conclude the early tranche,' Mr. Berthwal said. 'Both the teams are visiting each other. We visited the U.S. twice and the U.S. team has visited India twice, so the progress has been good. We are hopeful that this would be done within the timelines.'
On the India-U.K. Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the negotiations for which concluded in early May, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce L. Satya Srinivas said the two sides were on track to complete the legal scrubbing of the text and finalise it in three months since negotiations ended. The India-EU FTA talks, too, were gaining momentum, he said.
'On the EU FTA, there are some tracks that are working this week together, and we have our next round which is scheduled on July 7,' Mr. Srinivas explained. 'The momentum has picked up regarding the EU talks and the frequency of meetings has increased. Earlier we used to have rounds that were spread across a quarter or even more, but now the time period between meetings has reduced.'

Madhya Pradesh CM to unveil water conservation works of Rs 1,518 crore as Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan concludes today

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 30 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has renewed his appeal for water conservation as Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, which has been running for three months across the state, will conclude on Monday. The closing ceremony of the campaign will be held in Khandwa district today and Yadav will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of water conservation works worth over Rs 1,518 crore in the programme. Before leaving for Khandwa, the Chief Minister said that the campaign was held due to inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has initiated several programmes for water conservation. 'From Gudi Padwa (March 30) to June 30, we ran Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan across the state for three months with the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under the campaign, I am going to Khandwa to lay the foundation stone and inauguration of various works related to water conservation worth over Rs 1518 crore,' he said. 'Khandwa district has done the best work in water conservation across the country and it has been recognised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti,' he added. He said 57,207 water conservation works done under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, worth around Rs 578 crore, will be inaugurated today. 'Additionally, 888 water conservation works done under Watershed Development Component-Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, at a cost of Rs 63.46 crore, will also be inaugurated. For Khandwa district too, various water structures, including wells, ponds, especially farm pond schemes, Amrit Sarovar schemes, will be dedicated,' the Chief Minister said. 'Awareness about water conservation has also increased across the state. The old Bawadis (stepwells) have improved. We have also given different types of awards under the campaign,' he added. Yadav also emphasised the importance of water in human life. 'No work can be done without water, neither we will be able to worship nor be able to live a day or a moment of life. Let us all come together, save water, and save lives ahead. Madhya Pradesh is home of rivers and it has its own importance. After this, we will lay more emphasis on planting trees under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' which will maintain the natural beauty of water bodies and play a life-giving role in water conservation. Plantation work will be started,' he said. (ANI)

India's textile sector needs fair deal from ASEAN countries: Exim Bank Report

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): India's trade with its top ASEAN partners like Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia has grown a lot, even though India has taken a protectionist approach after signing the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AITIGA). But Indian exporters, especially in the textile sector, are still facing major challenges. A report by India-Exim Bank noted that a large number of Indian textile products have been put on 'exclusion' or 'sensitive' lists by ASEAN countries. This means they don't get duty-free access, making it harder for Indian textiles to compete in those markets. Countries like the Philippines and Vietnam also offer zero-duty access under AITIGA, but Indian businesses are not using this opportunity fully. The study suggests that the trade agreement needs to be re-examined and renegotiated. Many products that India is strong in exporting are blocked or restricted by ASEAN countries. These are called 'offensive' products, and India should push for better access to them. At the same time, there are 'defensive' products where India should keep higher tariffs to protect local industries and reduce the trade gap. The textile and garment industry is very important for India's economy. It makes up over 10 per cent of India's manufacturing output and 1.4 per cent of the total GDP. In 2023-24, textile exports were worth USD 34.4 billion, or nearly 8 per cent of India's total merchandise exports. To boost the growth of man-made fibres, the Government of India has launched a special support plan called the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. This scheme is focused on the Man-Made Fibres (MMF) and Technical Textiles sectors. It aims to attract investment, encourage local manufacturing, and make Indian products more competitive in global markets. So far, 73 companies have been chosen to benefit from this scheme. India is already one of the world's top producers of textiles. It ranks second in cotton production after China. In the 2023 market year, China made up over 24 per cent of the world's cotton output, while India followed closely with 23 per cent. Other major producers include Brazil (13 per cent), the USA (11 per cent), and Pakistan (6 per cent). India contributes about 4.7 per cent to global textile production and is a major player in cotton, silk, raw jute, and man-made fibres. These products are used both in India and exported to other countries. (ANI)
