Bhoodan land case: Telangana HC questions locus standi of petitioner
The case pertains to survey No 194 and 195 in Nagaram, where allegations have emerged that high-ranking bureaucrats purchased lands allegedly earmarked under the Bhoodan movement — a land donation initiative meant for landless individuals.
Justice K Lakshman, hearing multiple writ petitions, including those filed by Birla Mallesh and Vadthya Ramulu, questioned the legal standing and motive of the petitioners. In particular, the court expressed concern over petitioner Birla Mallesh's locus standi, seeking clarification on how he is directly concerned with survey No 194 of Nagaram village.
Senior counsels representing the IAS and IPS officers, including P Raghuram and Chandrasen Reddy, pointed out that the petitioner's mother, Birla Jangamma, had already filed a similar writ petition in 2024, which was duly disposed of. They contended that the current petition is an attempt to reopen settled issues with mala fide intent and to tarnish the reputation of senior government officials.
They further alleged that Birla Mallesh deliberately suppressed this prior litigation and misled the court to obtain interim orders. Initially, the petitioner claimed that survey No 194 was Bhoodan land but later altered his position, stating it was government land.

HC quashes FIR against CM in BJP ‘defamation' case
Justice K. Lakshman of the Telangana High Court, on Friday, quashed the proceedings related to the First Information Report (FIR) issued against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, pending before a local court in Hyderabad. The case was registered against the CM based on a private complaint lodged by BJP General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu, alleging that Mr. Revanth Reddy defamed BJP by stating that 'the party would do away with reservation to BCs, SCs and STs if it came to power'. The statement was made by the CM at a public meeting in Kothagudem during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, the complainant said. Challenging this, Mr. Revanth Reddy filed a criminal petition in the HC, which set aside the FIR.

Wife's claims of impotence in divorce case not defamatory: HC
Mumbai: Bombay High Court has declared that a wife's allegations of impotence against her husband during divorce proceedings do not constitute defamation and that such claims, when made to protect a woman's interests, are a necessary part of the legal process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dismissing a man's defamation complaint against his estranged wife and her family, Justice S M Modak in his July 17 order, made public on Friday, noted that under the Hindu Marriage Act, allegations of impotency are "very much relevant" and can be a legitimate ground for divorce. Justice Modak stated a wife is "justified in making those allegations to support her interest" and to prove that she suffered cruelty in the marriage. The man had argued his wife's claims, made in her divorce and maintenance pleas and in a separate FIR, had become part of the public record and therefore damaged his reputation. The allegations of impotency being a ground for divorce are necessary, it said. "This court feels that when litigation between spouses arises in a matrimonial relationship, then the wife is justified in making those allegations to support her interest," the court said, adding the same cannot be held as defamatory. The man had stated his estranged wife had, in her pleas seeking divorce and maintenance and also in her FIR against him and his parents, claimed that he was impotent. PTI

IPS Sonali Mishra becomes first woman DG of Railway Protection Force
New Delhi: In a historic development, Sonali Mishra, a 1993 batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has assumed charge as the Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), becoming the first woman to head the 143-year-old force. She succeeds Manoj Yadava, who retired on July 31. Her appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, is valid until her superannuation on October 31, 2026. She brings with her over 30 years of distinguished service in policing and security, having served in prominent roles across both state and central agencies. Prior to this appointment, she held the position of Additional Director General of Police (Selection/Recruitment) in Madhya Pradesh and concurrently managed the roles of ADG at the Police Training & Research Institute and Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy in Bhopal. Her career also includes key assignments with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Border Security Force (BSF), and a notable stint with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo. Recognised for her professionalism and leadership, she has been awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. Her leadership at the helm of the RPF is expected to usher in a new era of modernisation, technological adoption, and proactive community engagement. She is likely to emphasise strengthening RPF's role in tackling organised crimes such as human trafficking and ensuring the safety of vulnerable passengers across the Indian Railways' extensive network. Upon taking charge, Mishra expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and reaffirmed her dedication to upholding the RPF's core values of vigilance, courage, and service, embodied in its motto 'Yasho Labhasva'. The RPF, entrusted with the security of railway property and passenger safety, looks forward to achieving new milestones under its dynamic leadership.
