Coldplay's concert viral affair: The scandal that toppled a tech CEO and rocked Astronomer

Sinar Daily3 days ago
SHAH ALAM – A jumbotron kiss at a Coldplay concert was supposed to be a fleeting moment of fun. Instead, it ignited one of tech's most bizarre public scandals.
A viral video, seen by tens of millions, captured Astronomer Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andy Byron embracing his company's Chief People Officer, Kristin Cabot. Andy Byron has resigned from his position as CEO of Astronomer. Photo: X
This triggered allegations of an affair, a corporate investigation and his abrupt resignation. Beyond the drama, few understood what Astronomer actually does, or why it matters to some of the world's biggest companies.
What is Astronomer? And why do tech giants use it?
Imagine ordering an Uber: your location data, driver info and payment details all live in separate systems. Yet, within seconds, the app connects them to get you a ride. That seamless orchestration is often powered by Apache Airflow, an open-source tool that schedules tasks across different data systems. But Airflow is fragile; it crashes during server updates and needs manual fixes.
Astronomer, founded in 2018, built a solution called Astro, a commercial version of Airflow with automatic updates and a faster, more stable infrastructure. It is reportedly two to three times faster than major competitors. Notably, 19 of the top Airflow code contributors work at Astronomer. This means the same people steering the open-source version also build the paid version, essentially letting Astronomer quietly shape the tool that powers global companies.
From CEO to viral meme: The Coldplay concert that changed everything
On July 16, at a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the stadium camera panned to Byron, 50, cuddling Cabot, 43, from behind. Both are married, but not to each other. When the jumbotron caught them mid-embrace, they immediately recoiled. After the Coldplay video went viral, Megan Kerrigan Byron dropped his surname on Facebook before deactivating her account. Photo: X
Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin saw the awkward reaction and quipped to the crowd: 'Either they are having an affair or they are just very shy.'
That comment and the moment, went viral. One concertgoer's video racked up over 45 million views on TikTok and spread across platforms like wildfire. Within 48 hours, Byron was placed on leave. By Saturday, July 20, he had resigned.
'Andy Byron has tendered his resignation and the Board of Directors has accepted. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability and recently, that standard was not met,' Astronomer said in a statement.
Byron's rocky leadership history resurfaces
The kiss cam moment was not Byron's first public controversy. A 2018 report by The Information revealed troubling behavior during his time as Chief Revenue Officer at cybersecurity startup Cybereason.
'Mr Byron would lash out against employees who disagreed with him, including threatening to fire them,' according to a former staff member.
'You could not challenge him,' another ex-employee claimed.
Though Byron denied these allegations, saying difficult decisions were necessary for growth, many staff reportedly quit during his tenure. Some allege he replaced them with loyalists from his previous company, Fuze.
Silent profiles, deleted accounts and a divorce looming
Following the Coldplay video's virality, Byron's wife, Megan Kerrigan Byron, reacted swiftly. She removed his last name from her Facebook before deactivating her account entirely. Byron also deleted his LinkedIn profile, as did Cabot.
Megan and Byron, who share two children, are now reportedly headed for divorce. Under Massachusetts' 50/50 marital asset laws, family law expert Nancy Chemtob says she could walk away with up to US$35 million, depending on Byron's estimated net worth (US$20M–US$70M).
'The worst thing in this case is the embarrassment factor for the kids. There is going to be a lot of expenses with regard to therapy, getting separate homes and more,' Chemtob said.
Cabot's position and silence
Cabot joined Astronomer in November 2024, while Byron came on board in July 2023. In a press release at the time of her hiring, Byron praised Cabot's exceptional leadership and deep expertise.
She was previously married to Kenneth Thornby, a rum entrepreneur, but they divorced in 2022. Her current marital status is unknown and she has not made any public comment on the matter.
The Internet runs wild
The viral moment did not stay within tech circles. Brands from Ikea to Tesla to Hulu hijacked the meme. Coldplay's Chris Martin. Photo: X
Ikea posted two stuffed animals hugging with the caption: 'Do not get caught without these, HR-approved cuddles.'
Tesla joked: 'Taking your loaner Tesla to a Coldplay concert is like cheating. Your car will know.'
Frido mattress photoshopped Byron onto their cuddle pillow: 'Bro could have just used our Cuddle Pillow and avoided all that embarrassment.'
Even Coldplay joined in, with Martin joking during their next concert on July 19 in Madison, Wisconsin: 'We would like to say hello to some of you in the crowd. How are we going to do that is we are going to use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen. So please, if you have not done your makeup, do your makeup now," he joked and the crowd understood what he meant.
What's next for Astronomer?
After Byron's resignation, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy stepped in as interim CEO. DeJoy, who helped build Astronomer into a unicorn startup valued at over US$1 billion, subtly acknowledged the meme's reach.
Despite the scandal, Astronomer remains a critical player in the data infrastructure space, powering backend systems for companies that need real-time data syncing, from artificial intelligence (AI) platforms to logistics. Back in May, the company raised US$93 million in funding led by Bain Ventures and Salesforce Ventures, highlighting strong investor belief in its future, no matter who's in the CEO chair.
What started as an awkward moment on a jumbotron led to the swift fall of a tech CEO, a viral meme wave, a likely high-stakes divorce and an HR scandal that turned into comedy fodder.

Poached chicken and porridge comforts await at longtime neighbourhood favourite Lian Kee in Subang Jaya

SUBANG JAYA, July 24 — Picture 1996. The KL Tower was inaugurated. Michael Jackson performed two shows at Stadium Merdeka. The internet was fast becoming part of daily life, and everyone and their kids danced along to the Macarena, gleefully crossing their hands on their hips to the tale of poor Vitorino getting two-timed by Macarena herself with two of his friends! Fast forward to today, and things sure look different. At night, Lian Kee is the only stall operating in Restoran Meisek — Picture by Ethan Lau The KL skyline now bears the intrusive silhouette of Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building in the world. The internet is no longer just an essential part of our daily lives; for some, it is their entire life and livelihood. And poor old Vitorino can maybe finally find some solace in the fact that these days, we have Chris Martin of Coldplay to put adulterers on blast, deliberately or otherwise. But what about the constants? For folks living around USJ 14, Subang Jaya, one constant comes in the form of Lian Kee in Restoran Meisek, serving comforting poached chicken, bean sprouts, hor fun and porridge since 1996. Bean sprouts, some of which are short, fat and crunchy — Picture by Ethan Lau Those familiar with the area will recognise the address as the corner where the incredibly popular Aroma Burger stall is set up, widely considered the best spot for a Ramly burger in Subang. Elsewhere, Lian Kee has another location under the same name in Taman Subang Permai, and an additional outpost known as Tian Kee in Kota Kemuning. Lian Kee opens for business at four in the afternoon. One of the speciality dishes, Teochew-style braised tofu and egg — Picture by Ethan Lau They're the only stall in the kopitiam that operates at night, and their setup reflects that. Large signs tell diners to find a table and sit. A staff member will come to take their order, rather than having people walk up to the stall and get in the way. Drinks are self-service, and there is also a separate counter for payments and takeaway. It is an extremely well-organised system, clearly developed over the years of operating this way. The menu spans poached chicken (both the regular and kampung variety), bean sprouts, rice, hor fun soup and porridge. The plain 'hor fun' gets a squirt of prawn oil — Picture by Ethan Lau It also goes further with a few specialty dishes, including Teochew-style braised pork and tofu, Hakka-style braised pork with yam or preserved vegetables, and even a Thai-style fried fish to boot. Talk about diversified offerings. We ordered half a regular white chicken (RM33), which was smooth and moist. I never order kampung chicken when eating poached chicken because I find it's firmer, leaner meat gets in the way of achieving that slippery, supple texture. If you're the kind of health nut who worries about the fat content of regular chicken, then why bother? Just go full Rambo and boil some unsalted skinless chicken breast. Otherwise, stop letting your algorithm make you feel bad and live a little, man. And the best bit? The salty bit. The seasoned sauce was a winning mix of sesame oil, soy sauce, and maybe even a bit of shallot oil, all coming together in a medley of sweet and savoury that tied everything on the plate together. A similar tasting sauce adorned our large portion of bean sprouts (RM12), which were the short, fat and crunchy variety, much to our delight. Out of curiosity, we also tried the braised Ipoh tofu (RM3.50) and egg (RM2.20). Covered in a thick braising sauce, they made for an alright snack, but the prawn wantan (RM10) were what gave us real joy. Each wantan was firm and absolutely brimming with fresh, springy prawn flesh. The prawn 'wantans' were positively brimming with fleshy prawn filling — Picture by Ethan Lau They came in a simple chicken broth that carried maybe just a whisper of prawn oil. Something far richer and more intense came in the form of a bowl of plain hor fun (RM4.50). The broth was fairly savoury, with just a hint of sweetness from the prawn oil, and it seemed to appear on nearly every table in sight. It was clearly more popular than the rice (RM2). But the carb perhaps most worthy of being ordered is the porridge. Classic Cantonese-style porridge, complete with pork mince and both salted and century eggs — Picture by Ethan Lau It's smooth and velvety, classic Cantonese style, so it was only right to get it with the holy trinity of Cantonese porridge toppings: salted egg, century egg and minced pork (RM9). It might not be the most congruent pairing with poached chicken. It might even feel a little strangely tacked on. It isn't even exactly the kind of porridge most people are used to having with poached chicken. But as we've seen across the rest of the menu, Lian Kee goes far beyond just bean sprouts and chicken rice. When you've been around as long as they have, you're bound to pick up a few things along the way. That's life. Guidehouse Research Explores Evolving Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Technology Market

eVTOLs are on the verge of full commercial manufacturing and approval BOULDER, Colo., July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A new report from Guidehouse Research explores electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, industry players, and proposed business models for rolling out eVTOLs. Now that EVs are being fully rolled out on the ground, developers are looking at other transformations for moving people around. With technological advances increasing every year, eVTOLs are on the verge of full commercial manufacturing and approval, but are flying-car services really on the horizon? According to a new report from Guidehouse Research, with the imminent certification and commercialization of eVTOL vehicles fueling the idea of cars flying over traffic, market watchers can be forgiven for believing that all traffic problems have been solved, and congestion will never be a problem again. 'Many manufacturers of these aircrafts are attempting to speed up their commercial development by launching them as part of a larger air ride-hailing service, like an 'Uber in the sky,'' says Jake Foose, research analyst with Guidehouse Research. 'Whether or not the market is ready for that service to roll out is one issue, but another is whether the vehicles themselves are ready for a flight hailing service.' According to the report, Guidehouse Research suggests: The current eVTOL target business model is unrealistic and shows few signs of applicability to a larger market. After the initial rollout, eVTOL operators should not focus on flight-hailing services. Battery swapping technology could be developed to alleviate charging infrastructure issues that might arise while operating eVTOLs as passenger aircraft. The report, Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Vehicle Services Create Fewer Advantages Than Initially Thought, reviews current eVTOL technology, industry players, and proposed business models for rolling out eVTOL. Guidehouse Research provides detailed and actionable recommendations for eVTOL manufacturers, both for short-term business models and for technology developments that could assist overall market share.
