Deck-defying fun for thrill-seekers
This is Category 6, where you'll find six record-breaking slides, all included in your Royal Caribbean cruise. You might want to work your way up to braving the Frightening Bolt, a freefall waterslide that begins with the floor literally dropping away beneath your (crossed) feet and propels you down into a tunnel of lights to emerge back on deck with a whoop and a smile. It's the tallest of its kind at sea, and something you won't forget in a hurry. Just as memorable is the Pressure Drop, the first open freefall waterslide at sea, which sends you hurtling feet-first at speed down a vertical drop – this time open to the elements. All the better for hearing you scream.
After taking on those two, make it personal with a ride against a friend on the Storm Chasers. Grab a mat and choose between one of the two slides, either fiery orange or ocean blue, then launch yourself headfirst and race to see who comes out the other end first. Finally, gather the whole tribe for a ride on the duo of family raft rides: Hurricane Hunter and Storm Surge. Both can take four thrill-seekers for a spin, with Storm Surge even flinging you out in a loop before returning you safely to deck.
There's even more watery fun on offer at the FlowRider, also included in your sailing. This 12m long surf simulator recreates the ocean waves atop the deck of Legend of the Seas, challenging you to ride a massive 100,000 litres of water set to rush at you at 25 miles an hour, either on a boogie board, or standing upright on a surfboard. You'll need to be at least 132cm (4'4' feet) tall to tackle this one, and there's stadium seating for all the family to watch the action unfold.
If you've got a head for heights, then you'll love the unique Legend of the Seas experience, Crown's Edge, a hybrid of high ropes course and above-ocean skywalk. First, you'll don a full body suit and hard hat, then strap into your harness for a series of challenges sure to get your heart racing. Step from platform to platform, crossing increasingly large gaps – and onto a platform set to fall away beneath your feet. Take a deep breath and wait for the drop, which sends you zip-lining back to deck in one thrilling swoop. The only question is: would you rather do this one in the daylight, picking out every detail of the oceanscape beneath your feet, or tackle it by night, dangling off the ship with total darkness below? The choice, as ever, is yours.
Refuelling stops
After all that activity, you'll be sure to have worked up an appetite, and Legend of the Seas has plenty onboard to satisfy it. If you want to get straight back to the fun on deck, then head to grab-and-go favourite Surfside Bites. Here you'll find something for everyone, with savoury dishes that run the gamut from popcorn chicken to burgers and hot dogs, and puddings that include confetti cookies and soft serve ice cream in a variety of flavours.
Feeling hungrier? Take a seat at the Surfside Eatery, a family-friendly buffet restaurant that's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Here you'll find everything from pancakes topped with fresh fruit through to pasta, chicken nuggets and chips.
Alternatively, head to Giovanni's, where the fixed price dinner menu features Italian classics such as hand-tossed pizzas cooked to order, giant meatballs, lasagne and chicken parmigiana. There's a more upscale vibe here but the dress code remains casual and all the family are welcome. So pull up a chair, order an Italian bottle of wine and kick back as you discuss all the day's adventures.

Hurtigruten will pay remote Norwegian villages to host passengers
A Norwegian cruise company has said they have found an "antidote to overtourism ' by offering sailings to smaller villages as part of their packages. Cruise giant Hurtigruten has introduced new 'Open Village' experiences along Norway 's remote coastline in collaboration with local residents. The company said they will be sending a fee per guest to communities involved. The exclusive experiences have been designed to immerse visitors in the everyday life of three villages on the coast: Træna, Bessaker, and Sæbø. Excursions will be available to passengers on Hurtigruten's Signature Line Voyages in the busy summer period between May and September. These voyages take place on the cruise line's smaller ships: the only vessels that visit the remote coastal villages during the summer season. There is space for up to 500 passengers on each ship, with Hurtigruten saying they will directly contribute 250 Norwegian Krone (around £18) per guest to each community they visit. In Bessaker, guests will be welcomed with a festive village parade and will gain access to historic buildings. Live music, woodcarving activities and homemade treats are also planned. Over in Sæbø, tourists can attend church concerts, explore the Avalanche Centre and get a guided tour of the town's natural and cultural history. Meanwhile, a visit to Træna, one of Norway 's oldest fishing communities, will include tours of the local museum and church, plus self-guided wanders around the town. 'As some of Europe's best-known destinations struggle with the pressures of overtourism, our approach is deliberately different: slower, more meaningful travel rooted in genuine connection,' said Odd Tore Skildheim, head of product development at Hurtigruten. 'These villages, with a combined population of fewer than 1,000, are not just points on a map. Through our 'Open Village' concept, there is no cost to our guests. 'Instead, for every visit we make, there is a direct financial contribution made by Hurtigruten to each community based on the number of guests onboard, ensuring the benefits are felt by the people who live there. 'Our aim is for guests to feel truly welcomed and for locals to feel genuinely supported,' he added. Knut Johan Monkan, from tourism company Coastal Host Bessaker, said that while the community will be making an income, the Open Village initiative will also be an opportunity for growth. 'In a village of just 170 people, 12 businesses benefit directly from activity providers to artists, bakers and local producers. 'Without this initiative, places like FABrikken, our new restaurant, and Stokkøy Bakeri, named Norway's best bakery in 2023, would not have managed to keep going. 'The ripple effects are wide-reaching, and Hurtigruten's presence is essential to creating a sustainable, living village and district.'

The new £17 tax tourists will have to pay to visit popular Greek islands
Travellers heading on a trip to a Greek island this summer may find themselves hit with an unexpected expense. Greece 's new 'sustainable tourism fee' has now been introduced to cruise passengers from July 21. Between June 1 and September 30, tourists disembarking a ship at Mykonos and Santorini will have to pay €20 each, equivalent to £17.35. The fee decreases in October and between April 1 and May 31, during the shoulder season, to €12 (£10.41). Between November 1 to March 31, the charge lowers to €4. Charges also apply to other ports on Greek islands and travellers will be charged €5 (£4.34) during the summer months. While in the winter, cruise tourists will be hit with a €1 (87p) charge, and in shoulder season €3 (£2.60). The new fee will be charged per passenger and will apply for each port they disembark at. It will be down to the cruise company to declare and pay the charge on a quarterly basis. Will Sarson, a cruise expert at Riviera Travel, urged people to check what costs are included in their cruise bookings. He said: 'Preparation and conducting checks are key to preventing unexpected charges. 'Being charged for unprecedented costs can leave you short of spending money, restricting your ability to make the most of your trip. 'Tourist tax and port fees are among the costs that could catch you out, so it's crucial to be aware of these fees when going on a cruise. 'While these fees may have been included in the cruise fare, thoroughly review the cruise line's terms and conditions to be aware of what costs are included. 'If you're still uncertain, contact the cruise line for confirmation. Being aware of what fees have been paid will give you a clearer picture of your finances for the holiday.' The new charges have been put in place to help tackle over crowding caused by tourism. Mykonos is expecting to host 900 cruise ships this season with tourist arrivals expected to reach 1.5 million. While footage from Santorini showed thousands of selfie-hunting holidaymakers have packed the narrow streets in a desperate bid to capture sunset views adored by influencers. However, the tax hasn't been welcomed by the port authorities in Mykonos. Speaking to Greek Reporter, Athanasios Kousathanas-Megas, the president of the Mykonos Port Fund, said that the tax was a 'curse' for the island's economy. He said: 'I believe that the price difference will create problems in choosing a cruise ship from 2026.'
