Write off Italy at your own peril — Springbok captain Jesse Kriel
Springbok captain Jesse Kriel cautioned against writing off a passionate Italian side, ahead of their incoming series opener at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.
It is the Boks' first official Test of the season, after they opened their 2025 campaign with a thumping 54-7 win over famed invitational team the Barbarians in Cape Town over the past weekend, and they now want to back that up against Italy.
The double World Cup winning top ranked Boks are heavy favourites for the match, especially since Italy have brought a weakened team for their two-game series, leaving a number of star and experienced players at home.
Italy written off
Despite the fact that pundits the world over have written off the opposition's chances, Kriel, who will become the Boks 67th official captain when he leads the team out for the game, said that they have the utmost respect for their European visitors, and that they have prepared extensively for the clash.
'I think that's a massive mistake by the rugby world. Italy is an extremely passionate rugby nation and they are very good rugby side. We certainly haven't done that (written tehm off), and we respect them very much,' explained Kriel on Friday.
'We have shown that throughout or preparation this week. It has been an intense week of preparation and we are expecting a very passionate Italian side that will come out at Loftus tomorrow (Saturday). So we are really looking forward to the challenge.'
With a strong and experienced Bok squad named for the match, the team is aiming to get their international season off to the best possible start, especially with changes expected for the second Italian game and one-off match against Georgia.
Important start
'It is extremely important (to start well). As a team we have worked incredibly hard over the last three or four weeks. We know we have a massive season ahead and we want to get off to a good start,' said Kriel.
'We know the impact of us winning Test matches and what has on our nation. So we don't take that lightly. It is something that all the boys are aware of, and something that excites us as well. We really want to get (our international season) off to a positive start.'
Sharks utility forward Vincent Tshituka will be making his official debut for the Boks, after scoring two tries in the non-Test against the Barbarians, and Kriel says he is fully clued up and ready.
'That comes back to what a great squad we have got. We have a guy like Siya who has been mentoring Vince, been helping him in training and talking to him,' said Kriel.
'I don't have to do anything tomorrow *(Saturday) I think Vince knows exactly what his job is. We are lucky to have players that are competitive (for a place in the team), but guys also want to help each other to get better.
'I have seen Siya in training helping Vince, telling him where he needs to be, if he had done something a certain way it would have been better. So I don't have to tell him anything. He knows exactly what he needs to do, he is extremely talented and I think he can become a really good Springbok.'

We know the Italians are a passionate rugby nation and they showed that tonight," Kriel told SuperSport TV after the match. "It was a tough Test match, but I was happy with the win. But there is a lot to work on. In the first half we started pretty strong, but in the second half they defended like their lives depended on it. "We let ourselves down at the breakdown a bit. I thought they slowed our ball down quite well - we obviously wanted to attack off quick ball." Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg on scoring two tries and playing behind the Bok pack "It was special to do that (score a brace) and I'm very happy with the victory. It's truly amazing. It's my first time playing here (at Loftus) for the Boks and I must say it's something unbelievable," Van den Berg told SuperSport TV after the match. "Unbelievable. To see those boys do their work, it's a massive privilege to be here, I got the best view in the house. It's a real privilege." Faf de Klerk on his Springboks comeback and Van den Berg's performance "It's an amazing honour and a blessing. I really enjoyed it. Obviously just grateful to be back in the set-up and hopefully we can string a lot more good performances together," De Klerk told SuperSport TV. "Morne is a fantastic player, I'm just happy he is taking the opportunities he is getting. He is doing really well for the Lions and showing his quality now. "He is a great guy and he wants to learn. It's always great to have such a guy in the squad. "I think there is going to be disappointment after tonight's performance. There was a lot of good stuff and a few bad things, things we can work on. "Credit to Italy, they really made it hard for us, especially at the breakdown. I thought their forwards were phenomenal tonight and it's something we must look at in the coming week before the next Test."

Springbok player ratings from 42-24 win against Italy
The Boks struggled to get the better of an Italian team which tested them in a number of areas on Saturday. The Springboks scored six tries to three to beat Italy in the first of two Tests between the teams at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday. It was the Boks' first official Test of the 2025 season after opening their year with a match against the Barbarians in Cape Town the previous week. This is how The Citizen rated the performance of the Bok players in Pretoria, out of 10. Damian Willemse 7: In his first Test match back since the 2023 World Cup final, he looked solid in the air and dangerous with ball in hand, making a few good runs. He knocked on badly on one occasion. Cheslin Kolbe 6: He didn't get many chances to show what he can do, but looked for work and made a few darting runs. Competed well in the air. Jesse Kriel 6: A decent showing by the outside centre and captain on the day. He tackled well, cleaned rucks and carried strongly, while he showed plenty of calm in scoring the opening try. Damian de Allende 8: He carried the ball well, and often, and put in a number of good tackles. Made a good kick to set up Kriel for his try, and kicked well at other times as well. Kurt-Lee Arendse 8: He chased kicks and was excellent in defence, putting in one try-saving tackle. He also scored an outstanding try after a well-timed, angled run. Handre Pollard 7: He knocked the ball on early on, but settled to produce a decent performance. He ran nicely with the ball at times and tackled well. Solid goal-kicking was his best bit on the day. Morne van den Berg 8: He knocked the ball on once or twice, but generally kicked well out of hand and made several good tackles. He scored two tries, both of them excellently taken. Vincent Tshituka 7: He won a number of lineouts, carried strongly and tackled well. He scored what looked like a good try, which was chalked off by the TMO because of earlier obstruction, a pity. Marco van Staden 7: He scored a try late on to ease the nerves, a reward for a good evening's work. He made a number of tackles and cleans and carried the ball strongly at times. Lood de Jager 6: A second good showing in a row by the experienced lock, though not as dominant as the week before. He was solid at the restarts, carried regularly and put in some good tackles. Eben Etzebeth 8: He charged down a clearance kick early on and generally delivered a knockout performance. He was busy in all areas; he won lineouts, stole ball, chased kicks and carried hard. But he also got stuck in with carries and tackles. Malcolm Marx 8: His lineout throwing was pin-point accurate, he was busy in the tight-loose, and made some good offloads as well, one to Arendse for his try. Ox Nche 7: He also enjoyed a dominant scrum performance and did his bit in general play, with a few good ruck cleans, while he also carried the ball on occasion. Bench 5: Vincent Koch, Bongi Mbonambi, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, RG Snyman and Franco Mostert entered the action in the 48th minute and performed well in the set-pieces and in general play, though the Boks weren't as dominant in the scrums or lineoust as earlier in the game. Faf de Klerk and Kwagga Smith joined the game around the 52nd minute mark, with Smith busying himself in all aspects of the clash. Willie le Roux came on in the 62nd minute for his 99th Test.

Bellissima! SA singer nails Italian national anthem
Rugby fans are heaping praise on South African woman Sinesipho Mnyango, who nailed the Italian national anthem ahead of their clash against the Springboks at Loftus on Saturday. The Boks beat the Azzurri 42-24 on home turf. On social media, rugby fans praised South African opera singer Sinesipho Mnyango for performing the Italian national anthem, Il Canto degli Italiani. The classical singer flawlessly belted out the words she had likely learned just days before. Sinesipho – a soprano – was even credited for moving the Italian players to tears. X user @oramufc posted: 'That lady devoured the Italian national anthem! I still have goosies!'. Another, @Andrew__Grant shared: 'Outstanding. What a voice!'. A third X user – @justkuda – posted: 'A black woman singing an Italian national anthem and actually killing it? Wowza!'. Moments after Sinesipho Mnyango performed the Italian national anthem, fellow SA singer Bernice West took over the spotlight to sing South Africa's one.
