Stuart Broad advises against playing Jofra Archer in Oval Test, backs Atkinson as England, India battle injuries

Indian Express4 days ago
With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on the line, India and England head to London for the fifth and last Test of the five-match Test series, set to start from Thursday, July 31. Both teams will need to address multiple injury concerns ahead of the fifth Test, where the turnaround time is the lowest in the two-month tour.
For India, the headache is much bigger with Rishabh Pant fracturing his toe during the Manchester Test. Pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are injured, Jasprit Bumrah has to manage his workload, and it's uncertain whether he will play the Oval Test or not. England, too, will be worried for their pace attack which has seen Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Ben Stokes bowling relentlessly for the four Tests on the bounce.
But the biggest concern would be whether to play Jofra Archer in the Oval Test or not. Archer made his red-ball comeback for the national side after more than four years after persistent injuries and played the last two Tests for England in the series. Former England cricketer Stuart Broad feels Archer should not feature in the final Test and should be rested.
'We can't not have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years,' said Broad to Sky Sports.
'(Josh) Tongue started the series, and I know he mainly got lower-order players out, but you probably have a natural replacement for Archer,' he added on the potential replacement for Archer.
Broad also said Gus Atkinson should make it into the England XI in place of Carse.
'I think Gus Atkinson has to play. I know he has not had any workload, but we need to see him. He hasn't been really challenged against top-level opposition in Test cricket yet. (Brydon) Carse looked knackered in the fourth Test. He has been a trier and given absolutely everything, but looks like his legs have left him for this series, so Atkinson gets the nod,' he said.

Watch - What Do You Want Us To Do, Be Quiet: What Triggered the Verbal Clash Between KL Rahul and Umpire Dharmasena

The fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval saw tempers flare on Day 2, following a heated incident involving Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna. What began as a verbal spat between the England batter and the Indian pacer soon escalated, pulling in senior member of the team KL Rahul and on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena. On-field tensions boil over The confrontation began after Root struck Krishna for a boundary. Unhappy with a comment from the bowler, Root turned and walked toward him in protest. The situation grew tense enough that on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Kumar Dharmasena had to intervene and speak with both players in an effort to calm things down. In the aftermath, KL Rahul stepped in to back his teammate, approaching Dharmasena for clarification. However, the conversation quickly turned tense, with Rahul questioning the umpire's approach and defending the Indian players' right to express passion and competitiveness on the field. KL may face reprecssions due to this behavior with Umpire. According to reports, the verbal exchange unfolded as follows: KL Rahul: What do you want us to do? Be quiet? Kumar Dharmasena: You will like any bowler come and walk to you? No, you can't do that. No, Rahul, we should not go on that way. KL Rahul: What do you want us to do? Just bat and bowl and go home? Kumar Dharmasena: We will discuss at the end of the match. You can't talk like that. KL Rahul to Dharmasena: "What do you want us to do, keep quiet? "What do you want us to do, bat bowl and go home?" KL Rahul came to save Prasidh — Farrago Abdullah Parody (@abdullah_0mar) August 1, 2025 Despite Rahul's continued support for Krishna, Dharmasena warned him that his tone was unacceptable and stated the matter would be addressed after the game. It is yet to be seen if this was just to end the things straightaway or was Dharmasena serious. India fight back with the ball Earlier in the match, India had been dismissed for 224 in their first innings. England looked to take control with a solid opening partnership of 92 between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. However, Mohammed Siraj turned the tide with a brilliant spell, taking three key wickets of Joe Root, Ollie Pope, and Jacob Bethell during a crucial eight-over burst. England was bowled out for 247, taking a narrow 23-run lead. India on the other hand started their innings with a flurry of boundaries led by Yashasvi Jaiswal. While KL Rahul looked out of sorts in this innings Jaiswal scored a ravishing half century and is still unbeaten on the crease. Sai Sudharsan in the last innings of this series failed to capitalize getting dismissed on 11. India are currently 75-2 with 52 runs lead going into Day 3.

Stuart Broad agrees he 'cheated' years after infamous Ashes incident as Australia call for ban: 'Don't think I'm smug'

Former England pacer Stuart Broad, who has more than 600 wickets to his name in Test cricket, will be heading Down Under later this year for the upcoming Ashes. Broad will be a part of Channel Seven's broadcast team for the five-match marquee series between England and Australia. As soon as this development was confirmed, several Australian tabloids ran headlines saying the country's 'Enemy No.1' is coming to town for the upcoming series. (Action Images via Reuters) The West Australian ran a piece titled, 'The Ashes: Australia's cricket enemy No.1 Stuart Broad heading Down Under with Channel 7.' Several other Australian websites also ran articles about how Broad can expect a fiery reception once he touches down in the country. The same topic was a matter of debate during commentary for the second day of the fifth and final Test between India and England at the Oval. Former England captain Michael Atherton, while commentating for Sky Cricket, showed Stuart Broad recent news articles in Australia about him joining Channel Seven as part of the broadcast team. "Well, Stuart, just to reflect on a bit of news that emerged from Down Under overnight that seems to have gone down like a bucket of sick with the locals, namely that you're going to be commentating on one of the local channels in the Ashes," said Atherton on air. "Just a reminder of how popular you are down there, the Brisbane Courier Mail, that couldn't bring themselves to put a photo of you on the front page and then called you a smug, pommy, cheat, Broadban. Are you looking forward to going down to Australia this winter to commentate on the Ashes?," he added. He said he can agree with the "Pommy and cheat" bit, but he doesn't think he is "smug." "Well, I sort of obviously agree with the pommy and the cheat bit, but I don't think I'm smug," he said. Stuart Broad's relationship with Australia Stuart Broad was one of the most infamous England players in Australia during his playing days. The pacer was considered to be a villain Down Under after the 2013 Ashes. During the series opener at Trent Bridge, Broad edged an Ashton Agar delivery to Michael Clarke at slip. There was a clear edge, yet the left-handed batter didn't walk, and on-field umpire Aleem Dar didn't raise his finger. After the incident, the Australian media went hard at Broad, labelling him names such as "cheat" and "disgrace." He was constantly booed at every venue when England toured Australia for the Ashes. Speaking of the 2025 Ashes, the five-match series will begin on November 21 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The final Test will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 4-8.

Ricky Ponting would have punched Akash Deep had India pacer given him a Ben Duckett-like send-off: ‘You don't see that…'

Not always do you see a bowler getting severely criticised for his arm around an opposition batter, that too with a smile on his face. Then again, not often does a bowler do that immediately after dismissing him in a hard-fought series. The bowler in question here is India pacer Akash Deep. The batter to receive Akash Deep's arm was Ben Duckett. India's Akash Deep reacts with England's Ben Duckett after taking his wicket(Action Images via Reuters) It happened in the 13th over of the England innings when Duckett, in his attempt to play another reverse ramp, got an outside edge to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This was the fourth time Duckett was dismissed by Akash Deep but for the first time, it was after the left-hander had given a fair bit of tap to the Indian pacer. Duckett hit four fours and a six off Akash Deep in his blazing innings of 43 off 38 balls before getting dismissed. Akash Deep had the last laugh for sure but what he did after getting the wicket of Duckett became a talking point. The Indian pacer wrapped his arm around Duckett's shoulder and had a few words of wisdom, which were not received well by former cricketers Ricky Ponting, Michael Atherton and Dinesh Karthik. Ponting, in fact, agreed that he wouldn't have shied away from landing a right hook if Akash Deep had done something similar to him during his playing days. "I can think of a few batsmen down the years that would take umbrage at this, and I'm looking very much in your direction. That would have been a Ponting right hook, wouldn't it?" asked sports presenter Ian Warnd in a Sky Sports Lunch break show on Day 2. "Probably yeah, probably," replied Ponting. Thankfully, Duckett didn't see things like Ponting. The England opener took Akash Deep's send-off rather sprotingly before walking off. Ponting said his respect for Duckett grew after seeing how the attacking opener handled things after getting dismissed. "Although I mean, when I saw it, I just thought they must have been mates or played against each other somewhere or together. I would like to have something like that. I mean, you don't see that every day, maybe in a local park game or not in a test match that's been played as fiercely as this series has been played. I love the way that Ben Duckett plays his cricket. I think I like him more now to not to be able to react to that," Ponting added. Yashasvi Jaiswal's fortuitous half-century turned India's slender first-innings deficit into a 52-run lead on a dramatic second day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. On a pitch offering unpredictable bounce, 15 wickets fell on Friday as bowlers held sway. India, resuming at 219-7, added just five runs in the morning to be bowled out for 224. England responded with an explosive start, racing to 100 in just 13 overs, but collapsed to 247 all out, taking a slim 23-run lead. Jaiswal, dropped twice, counterattacked with an unbeaten 51 off 49 balls to lift India to 75-2 before bad light ended play early. With England leading the series 2-1, both sides have a strong chance, as a result, it now looks likely in the series decider.
