JRTB overhaul, enhanced facilities proposed by Perak after UPSI bus crash kills 15 students

Malay Mail12-06-2025
IPOH, June 12 — The Perak government will submit a proposal to the federal government to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB) linking Gerik and Jeli, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
He said the state government will also propose the development of a new alignment to replace the current route, which links Perak to the East Coast states.
'The matter (proposal to improve JRTB) was discussed during the state executive council meeting yesterday.
'I have asked Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee chairman) to prepare the proposal,' he said, adding that he would also propose the matter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his working visit to Lumut this Sunday.
He spoke to reporters today after officiating the closing ceremony of Perak Export Day 2025, hosted by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, which was also attended by its chairman, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, here.
Elaborating, Saarani said JRTB has been out of concession for the past 40 years, adding that it is high time to conduct a more thorough review of the route.
'Parts of the road have worn down to the base, exposing the soil. Patching is no longer an option. That's why we've asked Datuk Seri Nizar to outline what needs to be done in terms of alignment, road widening, construction materials, and all necessary elements, including street lighting and road markings,' he said.
Meanwhile, Saarani said the state government will also propose the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as well as increasing the number of related facilities and medical specialists along the route.
'In the event of a major incident, Gerik Hospital is insufficient to handle a large number of casualties. The federal government should also consider providing additional facilities such as mobile police stations or fire and rescue brigades along the JRTB route,' he said, adding that this is to ensure shorter response time.
On Monday, 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students were killed when a chartered bus travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle on the highway. — Bernama

Not enough funds to fix roads, says Ahmad Maslan, RM4 billion needed but only RM2.2 billion allocated

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — The Works Ministry (KKR) requires additional allocation for road maintenance, as it is becoming increasingly urgent to ensure that infrastructure remains in optimum condition. Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the main causes of road damage in Malaysia include weather factors such as heavy rain and heat, overloaded vehicles, and the natural lifespan of the roads. 'Typically, after 10 to 20 years, they need to be maintained to ensure they remain safe for use. However, we at the ministry are facing a shortage of funds. 'To properly maintain roads this year, we need RM4 billion. However, we only received RM2.2 billion – a shortfall of RM1.8 billion or 45 per cent. Nevertheless, we will continue efforts to secure a bigger budget for next year,' he said after appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme yesterday. Based on data from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), he said 13 per cent of road accidents are due to road conditions such as the absence of road markings, potholes, and inadequate lighting. 'Seven per cent are caused by vehicle-related factors, while human error remains the main contributor to road accidents at 80 per cent. 'The annual death toll from road accidents remains high at around 6,000, underscoring the need to address recurring causes, including factors related to road conditions," he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad said the MyJalan mobile application, launched in August 2023, has made it easier for the public to lodge complaints about damaged roads, with all reports accepted under the 'no wrong door' policy. This includes complaints beyond the ministry's jurisdiction, which are then channelled to the relevant agencies, such as the Rural and Regional Development Ministry for rural roads, the Housing and Local Government Ministry for municipal roads, and state Public Works Departments. — Bernama

BYD Atto 2: Malaysia getting larger 51.1kWh battery, stalk drive selector, and more

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — BYD Atto 2 for the Malaysian market will feature several key differences that will set the variant apart from its European counterpart, as well as Atto 2's twin in China, the Yuan Up. This is based on the EV's staging site for Malaysia that we have discovered online. Malaysia's Atto 2 may come with a bigger capacity battery Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market. — SoyaCincau pic In many ways, this discovery feels like a deja vu as we found the staging site more or less in the same way as per BYD Dolphin's price list ahead of its official launch event in 2023. However, we couldn't find the price list for Atto 2, though…we guess BYD Sime Motors people can take a breather now. If the information on the staging site is accurate, then the new EV will be released into our market with just one variant called the Atto 2 Premium. The biggest difference that the Malaysian unit has when compared to the existing version for Europe and China is that its LFP-based BYD Blade battery has a higher capacity. At the moment, the Yuan Up in China is being offered with either a 32kWh or a 45.12kWh battery pack. In Europe, the Atto 2 is currently available with a 45.12kWh battery pack while a version with a higher capacity battery pack will be offered in 'coming months'. Now, let's circle back to Malaysia: the staging site said that the Atto 2 Premium for our market is equipped with a larger 51.13kWh battery pack. This allows the new EV to deliver up to 410km of NEDC-rated range or around 340km if you convert that figure to WLTP. The Atto 2 Premium for Malaysia does have a front-wheel drive setup with a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that also produces 290Nm of torque, similar to the European and high-spec Chinese options. The staging site also said that the Malaysian unit is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds. Other details that the staging site has also listed include Macpherson strut front suspension, torsion beam rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tyres. In addition to that, the site has also listed three colours for Atto 2, such as Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green. Malaysia's Atto 2 may also feature a stalk drive selector Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market. — SoyaCincau pic As we browse around the staging site looking for more details, we notice something interesting about interior photos that were published on the site. Specifically, it appears that the Malaysian unit may come with a stalk drive selector. As a comparison, the drive selector for the European and Chinese units is located on the centre console. BYD essentially used the same drive selector from M6 for Atto 2 in these markets. Other features that might be included with Atto 2 for the Malaysian market Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market. Aside from the price tag, there are still a number of details missing from the staging site. That being said, we believe that the unit that Malaysia is getting will be similar to the right-hand drive (RHD) unit for the Hong Kong market. For one, the HK unit features a 51.13kWh battery and stalk drive selector. If our hunch is on point, then we might be seeing the Atto 2 for the Malaysian market to also come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 50W wireless phone charger. Based on the HK unit, the Atto 2 for our market may also come with 11kW AC charging module alongside the support for DC charging speed of up to 82kW. It may also have a 400L boot space which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold the EV's rear seats. Of course, do note that nothing is confirmed until it is officially confirmed by BYD Sime Motors itself. So, make sure to tune in for more details from the launch event of Atto 2 on Thursday, July 24. — SoyaCincau

Singapore-Malaysia joint emergency exercise to affect the Tuas second link traffic on July 23

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Singapore will close all three Malaysia-bound lanes to vehicular traffic on Wednesday to facilitate a Malaysia-Singapore joint chemical spill emergency response exercise that will be conducted along the Tuas Second Link. The Wednesday (July 23) closure will begin at 5am and end at 2 pm. Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) in an advisory said the exercise will simulate an emergency response to a multi-vehicle collision along the Tuas Second Link involving trucks carrying chemicals. The public is advised not to be alarmed. It added that motorists travelling towards Malaysia will be diverted to a lane on the opposite carriageway during the exercise. "Motorists should plan their journey in advance and closely follow the traffic marshals' directions on site. "Where possible, motorists are advised to avoid the Tuas Second Link while the exercise is ongoing and use the Woodlands Checkpoint during this period,' it said. The exercise is part of a bilateral cooperation programme under the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Committee on the Environment (MSJCE) involving the NEA, Malaysia's Department of Environment (DOE), and several other agencies. - Bernama
